adroitboss··on Show HN: I saw this mind-blowing experiment, so I made a simple version of it

adroitboss··on "Building Machines That Learn and Think Like People", 7 Years Later
I just think the tech has been out for so long it's not as big of a deal. Mini-Gpt4 has been out for 6 months! Of course the descriptions aren't exactly gpt-4 grade, but with mistral 7b being used as the language model instead of llama 7b, the reasoning ability will improve noticeably.

adroitboss··on OpenAI's justification for why training data is fair use, not infringement [pdf]
The data was already free. It was posted to the internet for anyone's viewing pleasure.
adroitboss··on We are beginning to roll out new voice and image capabilities in ChatGPT
Mine do, but not so much in words. I feel as though my brain has high processing power, but a short context length. When I thought to respond to this comment, I got an inclination something could be added to what I see as an incomplete idea. The idea being humans must form a whole answer in their mind before responding. In my brain it is difficult to keep complex chains juggling around in there. I know because whenever I code without some level of planning it ends up taking 3x longer than it should have.

As a shortcut my brain "feels" something is correct or incorrect, and then logically parse out why I think so. I can only keep so many layers in my head so if I feel nothing is wrong in the first 3 or 4 layers of thought, I usually don't feel the need to discredit the idea. If someone tells me a statement that sounds correct on the surface I am more likely to take it as correct. However, upon digging deeper it may be provably incorrect.

adroitboss··on Most UI applications are broken real-time applications
So is the moral of the story is to build an entire OS like erlang's actor model? Doesn't that work by using lightweight threads and messaging passing between them. The supervisor gives each thread a certain amount of time to run and then puts the current thread on the back burner while the next thread runs for it's allotted time. I remember hearing it in an erlang talk by Joe Armstrong on Youtube. I can't remember which one though.

adroitboss··on Show HN: LLaMA tokenizer that runs in browser
Thanks for the recommendations everyone.
adroitboss··on Show HN: LLaMA tokenizer that runs in browser
Thanks for the recommendations. I found the one I needed because of this comment thread.
adroitboss··on Show HN: LLaMA tokenizer that runs in browser
Does anyone know of a chatgpt/gpt-4 tokenizer that can run client-side?
adroitboss··on Connect to your Raspberry Pi over USB using gadget mode
They are crazy expensive now, but this could have been easily done in the past with a Flash Air sd card and a USB adapter.
adroitboss··on Google “We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI”
You can find the guy who created it on reddit u/edwardjhu. I remember because he showed up in the Stable Diffusion Subreddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/StableDiffusion/comments/1223y27/im...
adroitboss··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
This reminds me of the channels gamers get in Ready Player One. The main character used his channel to broadcast his favorite T.V. shows that other people could tune in and watch. This is a really cool!
adroitboss··on ChatGPT Will Replace Programmers Within 10 Years
Well, with AI's ability to complete more tasks companies will get smaller anyway. No programmers means there isn't a need for managers for those programmers. It means there aren't separate teams with different priorities. Someone "at the top" will speak to the computer, the change will be implemented and taken care of automatically. There will be no organizational politics to navigate.
adroitboss··on Enhance Speech from Adobe – Free AI filter for cleaning up spoken audio
I feel the exact same way. It sounds like the mic is close to his mouth, but when watching the video it's clearly not there. It's super trippy.
adroitboss··on The PS5 Has Been Jailbroken
I have zero idea why my brain also went to this quote.
adroitboss··on Shasta: AI-powered audio recording and editing
I think everything associated with their lyrebird acquisition. I think it would probably not be as simple as hiring decent engineers to throw at the problem when it comes to Descripts machine learning offerings.
adroitboss··on Shasta: AI-powered audio recording and editing
Descript was the first thing I thought of. Since it does audio and video, I am not sure this can be called a competitor. Descript has such a head start with features I don't think Adobe will be able to catch up.

I wonder if they made Descript an offer before starting this project. Although, the base problem of editing audio or video with text isn't that difficult. They probably thought it could easily be cloned. The devil is in the details however, and the rabbit hole runs deep.

adroitboss··on Ask HN: Creating the best possible career/monetary outcome for a side project
Thanks for the reassurance. I guess I need to just take the leap of faith.
adroitboss··on Ask HN: Creating the best possible career/monetary outcome for a side project
I have to clean it up a little bit, but I will post it. I guess I'm currently in a negative "what if" form of paralysis where I am prematurely optimizing which is a software engineering sin.

I'm targeting backend developers who want a quick front-end that (in a way) works as a backend api. It's not overly customizable, but it's solid and people don't have to worry about the frontend.

adroitboss··on Flowers for Algernon (1965) [pdf]
This book was on my reading list in 9th grade! I cried at the end. I felt for the main character all throughout the book.
adroitboss··on Ask HN: Where are all of the slow websites people are talking about?
Thank you for showing me this. I didn't even know that 1gb ram devices were created for consumer use outside of raspberry pi and the like. I will keep this in mind going forward.
adroitboss··on Ask HN: Where are all of the slow websites people are talking about?
Yeah I guess that is what I was looking for. Like all questions the answer is more nuanced. I think if you are a luxury brand selling luxury products you can safely assume you don't need your website to run flawlessly on the cheapest hardware.
adroitboss··on Ask HN: Where are all of the slow websites people are talking about?
I totally understand that as well. However, wouldn't the people with the most expendable money also most likely have the newest technology. Therefore the customers you are probably going to have the least issues with, would most likely have newer hardware anyway.

I understand you leave money on the table, but you would spend less on support and less money trying to get your website to be 200ms faster to load. This is speaking from an Indie Hacker perspective. This could be potentially worth millions of dollars for a bigger business.

adroitboss··on Ask HN: Where are all of the slow websites people are talking about?
I see your point, but wouldn't the issue than be visiting modern websites on dated hardware? Websites have gotten more complex, because of people's demands for better experiences visually. Therefore wouldn't we need stronger computers to keep up with the artistic expression and complexity of websites?
adroitboss··on Ask HN: Where are all of the slow websites people are talking about?
I would say so. It has a graphics card and an I5. It's not state of the art, but it's newish.
adroitboss··on Today is Antitrust Day. Tell Congress to put people back in control of tech
"Dominant tech companies abuse their gatekeeper status to undermine human rights" How so?
adroitboss··on How I Built LoginWithHN
I do the exact same thing for all of my new applications. Magic Link Auth is 10x easier then trying to store passwords. The added benefit for the user is they don't have to remember any more passwords besides their email password. Which is already used as a source of truth.
adroitboss··on Show HN: No-code alternative to Retool, Appsmith, Internal, etc.
If you know python (Which I am assuming you do because you mentioned Django) https://anvil.works/ is probably a really good solution for you. They also just updated their pricing, and they are open sourced.

They have a GUI editor and their custom server runs a full python backend. One of the co-founder's has given a lot of talks about designing their system and I think it's pretty interesting.

adroitboss··on Ask HN: Easiest way to build a CRUD app?
If it is purely a CRUD app and you know python, I would recommend https://pywebio.readthedocs.io/en/latest/. It allows you to write a website as if you are writing a console application.
adroitboss··on Why do NoSQL databases not support joins?
Thank you for pointing that out, but then the name NoSQL would be a misnomer. There must be multiple ways of storing relational data without including SQL. Someone above mentioned graph databases as a good example.
