adrianscott··on CoderBuddy, Napster investor's free Web IDE for Python & sites on App Engine
thanks, we put a bit on that here:

https://coderbuddy1.appspot.com/help

If CoderBuddy is free, how will you make money to pay the bills?

Our goal is to keep providing our current services for free, and expand those free services. We expect to earn revenues from advertising and from helping software developers earn money for their work. We may also charge fees to a tiny percentage of heavy users of disk/bandwidth/cpu to cover costs, but those should only apply after usage of a generous free quota.

Thanks for sharing your concerns, and I understand where you're coming from. I encourage you to check out the TOS's for Google App Engine and Heroku and other cloud-hosting services, which have similar wording, as I understand it. If you have suggestions on better wording that meets the needs of what we need to be able to do to provide the service etc., we welcome suggestions on that. Thanks.

Thanks, we'll be working on that.

Yes, they did have something somewhat like it. (Heroku Garden I think it was called.)

Thanks for passing this on, we'll look into it!
adrianscott··on CoderBuddy, Napster investor's free Web IDE for Python & sites on App Engine
Hi, we wanted to invite a few of you into our private beta. This is still an early version of our product, but hopefully there's enough functionality that some will find useful.

CoderBuddy is free for commercial, non-commercial and open source projects.

There were a few posts on HN about having a web-based way to use Google App Engine for static sites, and that's one thing you can do with CoderBuddy.

You can build and publish web-based applications in Python on Google App Engine. CoderBuddy comes with an instantly updating test environment and integrated publishing to App Engine. we're starting to roll out a more advanced editor, the 'New Editor (beta)' link with tabs.

We invite your suggestions of who we should test this out with, and your top 3 feature requests. We've tried to make it really easy for someone to get started coding and publishing. We'd also love to hear from folks giving workshops soon who might want to try this out there.

Thanks, -Adrian (Napster founding investor, founder of social networking pioneer Ryze)

adrianscott··on The FBI stole an Instapaper server in an unrelated raid
"So in this case, where the FBI is involve, using a SHA-1 hash poses no extra security vulnerability."

meeeh...

remember the fbi is not a person, it's an organization. the org can have bad actors in it who might be able to access the encrypted passwords but not be able to confiscate servers.

also, confiscating a server(s) is much more visible / detectable...

adrianscott··on Who is Hiring Remote Workers? (May 2011)
CoderBuddy welcomes remote workers.

Our goal is to revolutionize software development. Our founder is a pioneer of social networking (Ryze) and founding investor in Napster. Our angel investors include Internet entrepreneurs who have sold their startups to Google (pre-IPO), Microsoft, Yahoo, Fox, etc., as well as 500 Startups.

Technologies we use include Python, Google App Engine, Django, AJAX, AWS. Math ability is a plus. We're looking for a front-end developer, server-side developer, developer evangelist / social media fanatic, and a part-time or full-time designer.

We're particularly focused on recruiting in Latin America (for timezone and other reasons), though we'd still consider other folks. Our existing team members are primarily in Panama and Brazil.

adrianscott··on Tell HN: VC totally falls for april fools article
I admit I fell for that one for a few seconds. I think Techcrunch went overboard in the # of fake articles... There was a bubble in april fools stories...
adrianscott··on Ask HN: Should we agree that this account will submit all Who is Hiring posts?
yuk -- post is too long, and much less usable. 3 posts per month is not too much, imho.
adrianscott··on Ask HN: Should we agree that this account will submit all Who is Hiring posts?
part good, part bad. there needs to be room for new kinds of categories...
adrianscott··on Ask HN: I'm considering leaving a startup to look for big-company jobs (really).
You might consider contracting for a big company rather than being a bigco employee. More time coding, less time in meetings/politics, etc. I did that for a few years before focusing on founding startups of my own.
adrianscott··on Ask HN: How do you handle small web/tech requests from friends?
The Big N.O....

I do a limited amount for close family, and a very small number of non-profits I help out.

For the rest and for complicated requests from the above folks, I refer them to a computer shop or other person, or say I don't have a good recommendation on where they could get help with that.

I just helped out one non-profit by pointing them to some existing web tech they could use instead of writing software, and gave them a quick sample, and offered to teach them or find a consultant to teach them how to do the full version of what they wanted.

With another non-profit, I help them with the stuff that's fun for me, and connect them with other people to do the other, more time-consuming stuff they want to do.

adrianscott··on Why I stopped travelling to the US and largely stopped doing business in the US
If you're dealing with international travel, you have to read the fine print and be worried about jurisdictional issues, etc. and figure the bureaucracy risk in to your calculations...

e.g. you buy your insurance in France, problem happens in US, and it turns out your insurance only covers you in france. Or you need an apostille-authenticated copy of local police report, plus a certified translation, yadda yadda...

adrianscott··on Ask HN: Who Is Hiring Remote Workers? (February 2011 Edition)
FYI, at this time we are primarily focused on adding team members from Latin America (for time zone, budget and other considerations).

We have brought on board some great back-end developers, and as I write this, mainly would be interested in adding a front-end developer (Ajax/Python) and a designer (who can go from design to html/css/images, and ideally has some analytical orientation towards a/b testing etc)

Thank you to all who have written to us! We appreciate your time.

adrianscott··on Buddy system - good idea?
what tech are you programming in?
adrianscott··on Google is testing a cleaner, leaner UI on Google.com
i just tried google translate and the experience was dramatically less user-friendly than i recall
adrianscott··on Ask HN: Where to live internationally while learning to program?
Consider Panama
adrianscott··on Ask HN: Do I need to reincorporate when I move?
It depends on the country/state etc., but typically there is a process to "continue" a corporation from one country to another one.

Or one can often leave a corp hq in the old state and register the existing corp as a foreign corp in the new state.

US LLC's are a little more state-specific/diverse, so there'll be some details to look into on that as well.

As they say... speak to a lawyer! Good luck! ;)

adrianscott··on Ask HN: Who Is Hiring Remote Workers? (February 2011 Edition)
Thanks for asking.

Folks with other technical backgrounds are welcome. The bar is a bit higher = we are more selective on that. Really we are looking for some web application experience, otherwise the learning curve is a bit too long, generally. [ We have more flexibility on that for in-country-Panama members. ]

So if you don't have Python, but you have Java/Ruby/PHP/Web, that sounds interesting. I would recommend someone with mainly C/Unix start building some websites and webapps of their own w/ something like Python and App Engine (little plug: request an invite to our beta for one way to get started with that). In this day and age, if you really want to be in a startup-oriented environment, it should be difficult for you to not be creating some web apps with these tech's on your own etc.

Later on we may have more flexiblity when our team is larger.

adrianscott··on Why I'm Eating Dinner for Breakfast
I would encourage you to read further on nutrition, particularly in books like Grossman and Kurzweil's books (Fantastic Voyage and Transcend), as well as Tim Ferriss's 4Hr body (which discusses a case of someone losing weight by changing the timing of their food consumption).

Not all calories are equal.

Starting off the day with a good breakfast can jumpstart the metabolism.

adrianscott··on Why I'm Eating Dinner for Breakfast
It's a very healthy thing to do. Most folks eat an unhealthy breakfast when they do eat one. Eating a good breakfast is helpful in kickstarting the metabolism for the day.

adrianscott··on Google 2.4% Rate Shows How $60 Billion Lost to Tax Loopholes - Bloomberg

What's keeping you from getting any coding experience?
adrianscott··on Ask HN: I built a site that just went ridiculously viral. What do I do now?
twitter has servers dedicated to high-volume users without having to use urls/dns like that.
adrianscott··on Are entrepreneurs exploiting a tax loophole?
I've been waiting for this stupidity to get suggested... more reason to not move your startup and your entrepreneurial self to the U.S, imho.
