I took the same comment on a different way. To me they're referring to the fact that there are many other media outlets. Not only the big ones that do the same. But the smaller, "independent", that deserve more readers.
granted, they may also have interests or agendas. They point is we need decentralization!
"Think Like a Computer Scientist", right after an introductory course where I learned to program (only to discover that for-loops were done by myself when I was a teen and didn't even know about it, writing macros to level up skills in Ultima Online RPG.)
I guess this is "enshittification all the way down!". Surely, YC made a mistake but not having a more thorough review. But I believe the phenomenon is even more widespread, we'll fixate on this one. Meanwhile, plenty of VCs are being scammed by kids. Can't blame them, really... Who's hiring? AI filtering out resumés, and so on.
Sorry for coming up too cynical, but we are going through crazy times. Hopefully it will stabilize soon... ~~AI~~ LLMs can't really reason. But the public (layman, managers, and big fish) are being deceived because billions of dollars were burnt ;/
I'm fine with Firefox finding ways to compete with Chrome. For me, its survival depends upon it. And with its survival, we get all sort of forks (tor browser, librewolf, and so on) for niche users like HN readers commenting here and myself (Yes, privacy is niche. I would like a different reality, but that's how it is.)
To be fair, the criterias to decide on joining a contest were presumably developed by joining contests. At least, that's how I interpreted his ramblings through code and so on. I am more skeptical towards contests showing you the submitted jobs. Surely that is less frequent and an error (e.g. if a submission looks like copied, you'd assume it was but having shown these was on you as organizer)
[...] According to Mothersbaugh, he stumbled upon the colossal ruby when he was hanging out with a gemologist friend who “had this story about a gem mine where somebody was just in a hurry to get rid of a bunch of stuff, and he happened to be at the right place at the right time and he bought it for a ridiculously low price.” The two discussed how the types of people who usually buy these absurdly large gems have often acquired their money by rather sinister means—they are members of drug cartels, Russian oil executives, mobsters. Mothersbaugh decided that he’d like to carve the ruby. Specifically, he’d like to carve the ruby into the shape of a turd… “So whoever owns the world’s largest ruby, [has] to buy a turd to get it.” To disguise the turd as a scoop of ice cream, Mothersbaugh placed the ruby into a beautiful, highly polished bronze cone. Only the title alludes to the less-than-savory subject Mothersbaugh chose to depict (“kus-TURD”). [...]
Probably nobody notices it, but the article called Juan Domingo Peron to be a dictator. I get it, some detractors might say that. But that's hardly the truth. From wikipedia:
> Perón is the only Argentine president elected three times and holds the highest percentage of votes (61.86%) in clean elections with universal suffrage.
No. Yet, if you're cynical enough everything is a pyramid scheme. And, then maybe you're able to see that the economic systems themselves are full on that unsustainable growth (if, for example, you start looking into how the 'natural resources' are exploited to be centralized in important cities/ countries yet the environmental costs are never paid by the latter and so on...)
Perhaps you can explain the joke, and why it's funny for you..? I do enjoy jokexplainings, not as much as a joke I do understand, but even more than jokes that I didn't get.. ;)
I will take the liberty to expreas my most profound cynicism. Didn't Google fake some of its AI showcases recently? Didn't Apple fake stuff about their iPhone on some presentation? I believe this goes beyond a young person "mistake". And no. It's not just to the universities. There are plenty of institutions involved. There are commercial successes from technology corporations to take inspiration from. The lack of consequences stems from a judicial power that's made in an extreme conservative set of rules. So, everything is on fire. Or should be. And don't get me started on research journals and editorials...
This reminds me of what my cousin was doing last year, while on our Christmas lunch. (At a south hemisphere country, we tend to party hard that summer night and meet with family the next day.) She had some macro software moving her mouse and throwing keypresses at some notepad app or whatever. And she would get a random videocall to check on her at some point. I am sure that if they were to add an always-on video feed she would find the way to send some video loopback device like any Linux power user would do xD
I was able to remove YouTube thanks to Canta + Shizuku. Unfortunately, the latest android OTA upgrade breaks canta. But I'm already free of YouTube and enjoying NewPipe \o/
I went through something similar, I enjoyed emacs TRAMP for so long... One day, I saw a colleague opening remote vscode through SSH. Turns out I hadn't seen that on vscodium... it's kinda proprietary. (Should I care?) It's work! It needs to get done!! (: and another feat was magit, but that I left behind when I started using gitui ... I still highly appreciate and respect emacs. Maybe one day vscode will turn shit because, hey! it happens, and emacs will still be there for me <3
