adossi··on Police Feeding Celebrity Photos into Facial Recognition Software to Solve Crimes
If the FR were to learn based on input I could see how feeding it doctored images would screw it up in the long run. But if its just the FR utility, minus any ongoing machine learning, how does this effect the public's safety exactly?

Not disagreeing just curious.

Considering a large percentage of inmates have yet to be charged with a crime this would probably be incredibly lucrative for the prison industry.
adossi··on Katie Bouman, the computer scientist behind the first black hole image
Actually her appearance is relevant to the discussion at hand, within the context of this specific thread. There is no belittling going on here.
adossi··on Katie Bouman, the computer scientist behind the first black hole image
The title of the article reveals a lot about the biases at play here. "Katie Bouman, the computer scientist behind..." - keyword 'the'. She isn't 'the' computer scientist behind it, she is 'a' computer scientist behind it. If it were merely a case of putting an interesting person with likable facial features at the heart of the story the news articles' titles and descriptions could actually be accurate. In actuality we have misplaced attribution caused by the biases of the news media. Whether they're political or not, its easy to see through them and it adds an unnecessary off-note to the otherwise interesting scientific achievement.

EDIT: it looks like the title of the article has either changed or SEO causes some to see different titles than others. Regardless my initial comment should still be valid.

>allowing passwords to hit the logging infrastructure.

This is the most ridiculous of the three in my opinion. When logging to elasticsearch you programmatically have to say what data to put in the document before its indexed (and thus viewable via Kibana). This means that the developer actually put the password as a parameter in the document object.

adossi··on Google says Nest’s built-in mic not listed in specs was not meant to be secret
I agree with you that Google, an advertising company, would benefit greatly from secretly including a microphone (a-la Facebook giving you ads for stuff you've only spoken about out loud) however I disagree with your insinuation that the person you're replying to is a pro-government or pro-Google shill. I think Occam's razor in this scenario can lead you to two different conclusions.
adossi··on Do more with patterns in C# 8.0
I've been a .NET developer for a decade (a paid one for the last 6 years) and I consider myself a pretty competent C# programmer.

However (and maybe I'm alone here) the property and positional patterns syntax just honestly isn't very intuitive to me. It may be that because its a new feature it is just alien to me but nonetheless it is really hard to immediately discern what is happening in those examples without having read the descriptions that accompany them. I'm worried C# is on an ever-creeping path to looking like an alien language, as is (in my opinion) what is happening to C++ (e.g.: C++14 and C++17 features).

adossi··on Gov security falters during U.S. shutdown
Isn't it a little odd that such a large number of SSL certificates expired near the same time for these government-run web sites? Every time I've ever paid for an SSL certificate I bought at least a year in advance. I guess the US government prefers monthly subscriptions

Don't they already shoot Canada geese at airports because they're such a nuisance? I imagine a similar tactic could be used for drones

I wager dollars to donuts that those "3rd party iPhone repair shops" are not authorized by Apple

Netflix's system wasn't so much a thumbs up/thumbs down system that we all know and love - it was a frankenstein system where you couldn't see how many thumbs up/down a title had, rather you saw a percentage on how likely you are to enjoy that title based on the thumbs you gave others. At first glance it looks like YouTube's system but in actuality it was very different.
