Isn't it a little odd that such a large number of SSL certificates expired near the same time for these government-run web sites? Every time I've ever paid for an SSL certificate I bought at least a year in advance. I guess the US government prefers monthly subscriptions
I just assumed they had a ton of websites so they probably have certificates expiring all the time.
80 certs have been expired. Let's assume that certs are registered evenly across the year. We're 22 days into the shutdown, which is about 6% of the year. So if that's accurate, then there are about 1300 .gov sites. That seems reasonable. My guess is that more certs are renewed at the beginning of the year, but I don't have data one way or the other.
