adorton··on Coconut Headphones: Why Agile Has Failed
A "people manager" should never be put in charge of project or schedule management. It creates a conflict of interest between the realities of the project, and the outside pressure the manager may receive from other teams.

That's why, at least with Scrum, the agile manager, if he or she is part of the same team, reports to the same manager as the development team. The agile manager's job is to keep the agile process running smoothly, removing impediments, etc.

adorton··on MMM Receives Legal Threats
Allow me to introduce you to Leonard "J." Crabs.

adorton··on Life of Brian (Krebs)
I don't think there's a screenwriter in the world that knows how to do hacking and security stuff realistically.
adorton··on Netflix Kills Discussions
Not necessarily. I don't know how HoC is produced, but with similar shows (short-season cable dramas) like Game of Thrones, the series is usually shot and produced before the first episode airs.
adorton··on Emacs, naked
That fringe is neat. Anybody know if Vim supports something like that? I've never been able to make complete sense of vim's line length options. They never seem to work quite "right".
adorton··on Free Games: Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics
Anybody interested in these games should snatch them up - Interplay is losing distribution rights to them at the end of December. Who knows how long it will be before they return.

Once "purchased" you will still be able to download them from your games library, even after they are removed from GOG's catalog.

adorton··on The Monster Truck Madness 2 site is unchanged from 1998
The design is very clean for a site designed in 1996. Apart from being tiny (was it designed for ants?)
adorton··on “A Dark Room” game open-sourced
It doesn't have a ranged attack (as far as I can remember), so bolas should really help.
adorton··on Google Fiber announced for Provo, Utah
Their old office was on the old Word Perfect campus (now called Canyon Park), near Provo Canyon.
adorton··on The Minecraft Creator Markus Persson Faces Life After Fame
When I was 14, I started learning C from a book that built around this premise. I think it was called "Type & Learn C." It worked - by the end of the summer I was a somewhat proficient C programmer.

I still think it's kind of amazing how such simple advice can be so effective. I often find that when I'm struggling to grok a new language or framework, that I've forgotten to hand-type at least a few examples.

adorton··on Firefox getting smarter about third-party cookies
This is good news for sites like Facebook that track users across multiple, unrelated sites.

Individual sites can still track you with third-party analytics tools by creating a CNAME (DNS alias) to a third-party tracking domain.

adorton··on If You're Too Busy to Meditate, Read This
Meditation is the focused practice of resisting distraction.

Have you ever tried sitting still for 15-30 minutes, doing nothing but breathing? Distractions come easily in this state. Sometimes it's your thoughts. Other times, it's very hard to resist the urge to get up and start moving. In order to successfully meditate, you need to deal with a wide variety of distractions and other obstacles.

adorton··on Ask HN: You're in an empty room. How do you generate a random number?
Bash your head against the wall and count the stars.

adorton··on Tesla Museum Gets Funded
Wouldn't it be like making a pledge to a local public broadcaster? You get gifts for those, but they are still tax deductible.
adorton··on The year 2000 illustrated in 1900
That's one of the things I love most about Children of Men. It's clearly meant to be a realistic portrayal of 2027 (given the circumstances of the setting). The movie was made in 2006, but the main character wears a London 2012 hoodie. The futuristic elements are extrapolated from real things - the advanced, high res computer screens, the stylization of the cars, etc.
adorton··on Visual simulation of the 6502 CPU
I have no idea what is going on here, but it looks really neat.
adorton··on Show HN: Script Excel with Python
Impressive. Would people I share a spreadsheet with need the plugin?
adorton··on Why Django Sucks
What is wrong with django's ORM? I'm not being flip; I'm honestly curious.
adorton··on The girl with the ANSI tattoo
Hackers is funny, but I watched it recently and was surprised at the realistic touches. In one scene, a character is showing off his "hacking" books - which included the dragon book, and a Unix book I believe is real.
adorton··on What to do when Google PR0s Your Business
A lot of agencies use PR and Alexa rankings to negotiate rates.
adorton··on Shitter: Toilet Paper of Tweets
How did it smell?
adorton··on Netflix Loses Toy Story 3, Tron and 1,000 More Movies
Netflix's "HD" streaming content looks great. I don't know if it's "real" HD or not, but it's better quality than their non-HD stuff.
adorton··on PHP 5.4.0 released
While I agree that it makes it easier to hack in that functionality, it would still be very useful to have named parameters for functions that don't implement that functionality.

For example, fgetcsv takes parameters for delimiter, enclosure, and escape char (as of 5.3). Right now, if I want to specify a different enclosure, I'm forced to specify a delimiter even if I still want to use the default. I'd much prefer the ability to tell the function call that I want to override the enclosure and leave the delimiter alone.

adorton··on Evernote Hello
That was my first thought. Does the iPhone support something like near field communication?
adorton··on Introducing Chrome for Android
Opera Mobile is awesome. It feels so much faster than the stock browser. I recommend it to anyone stuck on 2.2/2.3 for the foreseeable future (like me).
adorton··on Creativity doesn't need a muse. It needs a drill sergeant.
How are agencies threatened by Google and Facebook? They aren't creative ad agencies. They provide publishing media (Google's AdWords, PPC ads, Facebook ads, fan pages, etc) and tools (Google Analytics) that agencies use to advertise more effectively. If anything, I'd say Google, Facebook and the like are helping ad industry grow.
adorton··on Game of Thrones CGI
True. You'd already need to be familiar with the characters and settings to consider them spoilers, but at that point, they wouldn't be spoilers, because you'd be at least that far in the books/series.
adorton··on When Patents Attack
One of the best TAL episodes in recent memory. The story mentions that modern patents (specifically software patents) lack the novelty that the patent system was originally designed to encourage. Did patent laws change at some point in history to allow this to happen?
adorton··on Explaining Google+ To The Norms
Here's how I explained it to my facebook friends:

"It's like facebook and twitter had a baby and let skype watch."
