adityapatadia··on SQLite or PostgreSQL? It's Complicated
Am I the only one who is thinking why they have developed in-house system for such tracking in first place? This problem (of analysis of traffic) could easily be achieved with Segment (a twillio product) and analytics tool like Mixpanel or Amplitude.
adityapatadia··on GitHub actions are facing problems
It seems to be some intermittent problem. Some of our private repos are working fine but majority don't.
adityapatadia··on GitHub actions are facing problems
I have added "workflow_dispatch" event trigger as well and it still does not run when we try to manually run the workflow.
adityapatadia··on Fast analysis with DuckDB and Pyarrow
Is it just me or others also think this is a lot of work for data analysis. For data of this size, BigQuery is not only fast but also very cheap.
adityapatadia··on Why I will never buy another Samsung device
Samsung TVs are worse. Their OS is something app makers are not willing to support anymore. Twitch just stopped working. This is something I don't expect from a $1k TV bought just 20 months ago.

I wish someone makes just TV panel with ton on inputs and outputs. I am happy to plug in Sonos soundbar and Apple TV to make it work and make it "smart".

adityapatadia··on How the modern world arose from imaginary numbers
This is one video which shows history of imaginary numbers and their usefulness in current times.

It's from Veritasium: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUzklzVXJwo

adityapatadia··on Fetch API has landed into Node.js
Thanks a ton for this. Fetch API is elegant and it working on node natively will so many edge cases we need to handle currently. Thanks a ton, please know that this will positively change our life and tens of thousands of other developers worldwide.
adityapatadia··on Tools to Download Netflix / Disney / Apple TV Content
Here is the plugin: https://github.com/cryptonek/widevine-l3-decryptor
adityapatadia··on The Next Backblaze Storage Pod
Yeah, :D But when someone hands over a storage system, temptation is high to store everything on it.
adityapatadia··on The Next Backblaze Storage Pod
We tried to use B2 for storing image and video files. First byte out is very slow (as expected). We however experienced bigger issues where if you try to upload millions of files per minute in their system, it crumbles. Huge amount of errors were thrown and their support could not help.

We decided to stick with king of storage AWS S3.

adityapatadia··on Tell HN: Never search for domains on Godaddy.com
We use AWS Route 53 for domain registration. Works like a charm.
adityapatadia··on Is WebP really better than JPEG?
Is JAVA still a thing?
adityapatadia··on Is WebP really better than JPEG?
ASK HN: Since this discussion has come up, I would like to ask HN if you are interested for an in-depth comparison on a production workload.

I run this https://www.gumlet.com which serves more than 50M images per day. We can put entire study on different image formats if HN finds it helpful. Please let us know.

adityapatadia··on Ask HN: Do you still use MongoDB?
We use it extensively. Basically the low overhead and almost no maintenance requirement of startup world is nicely satisfied by Mongo.

In our last 3 years of usage, we never faced any issues from DB. It's improved a lot in last 2-3 years and I can say it's rock solid right now.

I am basically finding no reason to switch to any other DB.

adityapatadia··on Google Kubernetes Engine is introducing a cluster management fee on June 6
A long time Google cloud customer who migrated away to DO recently. Here are the things Google gets completely wrong

- They are way behind compared to AWS in terms of stability and features, even then they always demand similar premium (ref. recent incedent: https://www.cbronline.com/news/google-cloud-down)

- Tax issues in foreign countries are never resolved. Due to Indian laws, we must pay TDS on our business payment and google has to refund them to us. It takes almost a year to get those refunds from Google. Not startup friendly.

- No support!! If anything goes wrong, AWS or DO solved issues even technical ones at times even when you have no support plan purchased. Google literally is useless when it comes to support. They carry that attitude from their search business.

- I see someone mentioned egress charges. In reality, cloud providers get super cheap bandwidth and they charge 9-10 cents for egress which is outrageous. It's not only Google but AWS as well but Google being new in market could have done better job here.

- DO Kubernetes is free and as someone mentioned, control plane downtime does not matter until workloads are not affected.

- In a nutshell, if I need stability, I will go to AWS, if I need better price, DO is not a bad choice. I am not sure where is Google positioned.

You can indeed do it. We call that a "web proxy" source. It's easy to setup and get started. Please try it out and ping us in customer chat if you need any help.
adityapatadia··on Essential Image Optimization
It's great to know you have implemented WebP in your pipeline.

Do check on-the fly optimisation tools like https://www.gumlet.com You can save a huge amount in server costs as well as developer and devops team time. Basically all image operations are done in the cloud and all images are served via super fast CDN - that too with cheaper price than a CDN.

adityapatadia··on Essential Image Optimization
I am indeed founder of Gumlet. Here are few reasons which makes it superior.

- cheaper pricing and no minimum monthly payments

- global image processing locations - ensures lowest latency regardless of location of your users

- no lock-in and wide variety of cloud storage support including DigitalOcean Spaces

- prompt support - less than 8 hour response time for all users

- GIF support

- especially compared to kraken, we charge only $0.1 per GB compared to their lowest pricing of $1 per GB

- strong enterprise focus - lot of features planned for enterprise support.

adityapatadia··on Essential Image Optimization
One option is to use https://www.gumlet.com It image processing servers located across the world and ensures very low latency image processing.

adityapatadia··on 1.1.1.1: Fast, privacy-first consumer DNS service
https://dns.watch/ this is also good one. Proved to be better than Google for me.
adityapatadia··on 1.1.1.1: Fast, privacy-first consumer DNS service
Put this DNS in your home router and not directly in your PC. Now your PC will fetch DNS at your home from this fast DNS and on pubic wifi, it will use theirs.
adityapatadia··on Cluster and app management services in Docker Cloud are shutting down on May 21
Rancher is far from dead. They are essentially making a nice frontend for k8s. All we care about is ease of deployment and management of containers. If that is being achieved by k8s, we don't have problem. And yes, they are managing 1.x version nicely with timely updates.

Plus it's a self hosted version so no such fear of it disappearing within 2 months. :)

adityapatadia··on Cluster and app management services in Docker Cloud are shutting down on May 21
It does not have hosted service. What we did was to dedicate one VM to its management server and that worked out amazingly well. Everything is inside it and does not disturb other systems.
adityapatadia··on Cluster and app management services in Docker Cloud are shutting down on May 21
It was long known since they did not ship any new update since August 2016. We at Turing Analytics migrated to Rancher labs about 6 months ago.

They should have announced it earlier and should have given more time to paying customers. I am glad I migrated very early.
