Never had to work with moq, got me to read the whole thing. There's still a place for good writing.

Surprised to see the "just" ffmpeg package name. Who's maintaining it? Afaik there's loads of ffmpeg packages in winget[0]

Thanks for sharing. It's stories like these I've read since childhood that got me into this. Those little adventures into remote places to work on some computers. This was my version of Indiana jones.

But everyone's in an AWS world right now.

It's even worse, the os is too restricted for doing anything more.

A18 Pro is generations ahead of M1 and M2 on single thread if these scores are true. Are you saying we had this incredibly overpowered silicon shipped on millions of Instagram machines?

I'm physically hurting at the amount of processing power we wasted. Atleast Apple did the right thing here.

adithyassekhar··on Claude is an Electron App because we've lost native
The age question was bit of an overreach on my part, sorry about that, I felt like you were one of those new developers who only ever had high end macbooks. You are right about the economics side and I don't hate electron in particular. Just the general state of the industry. Even native is incredibly slow nowadays while spending 1000x more cycles. It's crazy.
adithyassekhar··on Claude is an Electron App because we've lost native
May I ask how old you are? If you are not just naive, this should never be the attitude of someone building software. It's almost a cursed take.

Throughout history we've only gotten more efficient with our technology and it's resources. Software might be the only field where it went the opposite. Now we are insulting users on low end hardware?

The same thing I did well on a 2GB ram windows 7 machine is a latency nightmare on a 16GB windows 11. The same exact task with the same results.

Don't want to completely hate electron. VS Code proved it can be done in a good way, teams showed us the opposite. Like the author said you can build slop in any stack: JS or native it doesn't matter. What matters is care.

This entire industry is cursed with people who don't give a shit, in it for a quick buck, are entitled and lazy. Maybe AI should destroy everything anyway. We had better software when we gatekept who can build it.

Quiet the contrary, companies layoff all roles (frontend, backend, qa, devops, even ui/ux) and handle a project to one competent dev. And asks them to deliver it in 1/3rd the time it would have took with a proper team. It's happening at places I know. This thread on reddit is 100% same: https://www.reddit.com/r/developersIndia/s/EIksvB15tm

I can't even imagine the stress from context switching, and since people don't realize this is still work, they do this late into the night as well.

Thanks this seems like the correct meaning rather than the other comment. But that is beautiful its own way, got me all philosophical.
adithyassekhar··on I'm reluctant to verify my identity or age for any online services
Thanks now I understand. I am "only" 26, but I remember being 20 like yesterday. I can't believe I'm on the second half of the way to 50. COVID lockdowns and responsibilities didn't help.

I feel time has gone faster since I got a job, if that makes sense. Every day yearning for it to be 5o clock so I can check out, every week yearning for the weekend, every month yearning for the last day to get paid. Doing this is just asking for time to be over sooner.

adithyassekhar··on I'm reluctant to verify my identity or age for any online services
> As the years have marched on, though, that "birthdate" becomes significantly closer to my real birthday.

I understand there's a clever phrasing here but I didn't get it. English is only my second language.

> getting engineering experience that 15 years of hands on engineering couldn't give me.

This is the equivalent of how watching someone climb mountain everest in a tv show or youtube makes you feel like you did it too. You never did, your brain got the feeling that you did and it'll never motivate you to do it yourself.

There are three sides to this depending on when you started working in this field.

For the people who started before the LLM craze, they won't lose their skills if they are just focusing on their original roles. The truth is people are being assigned more than their original roles in most companies. Backend developers being tasked with frontend, devops, qa roles and then letting go of the others. This is happening right now. https://www.reddit.com/r/developersIndia/comments/1rinv3z/ju... When this happens, they don't care or have the mental capacity to care about a codebase in a language they never worked before. People here talk about guiding the llms, but at most places they are too exhausted to carry that context and let claude review it's own code.

For the people who are starting right now, they're discouraged from all sides for writing code themselves. They'll never understand why an architecture is designed a certain way. Sure ask the llm to explain but it's like learning to swim by reading a book. They have to blindly trust the code and keep hitting it like a casino machine (forgot the name, excuse me) burning tokens which makes these companies more money.

For the people who are yet to begin, sorry for having to start in a world where a few companies hold everyone's skills hostage.

I agree with you, syntax details are not important but they haven't been important for a long time due to better editors and linters.

> But you focus on the logic and function more instead of syntax details and whims of the computer languages used in concert.

This is exactly my point. I learned logical mistakes when my first if else broke. Only reason you or I can guide these into good logic is because we dealt with bad ones before all this. I use claude myself a lot because it saves me time. But we're building a culture where no one ever reads the code, instead we're building black boxes.

Again you could see it as the next step in abstraction but not when everyone's this dependent on a few companies prepared to strip the world of its skills so they can sell it back to them.

Jk, but how though? Would it be possible to give an example? You don't have to give into details. Totally cool if you can't.

adithyassekhar··on Elevated Errors in Claude.ai
Sorry but focusing on the hand coding part misses the whole picture and would derail the conversation. Comparisons like that are often dishonest.

Hiring someone who writes Rust with Claude but never written anything with it in their lives, never faced the edge cases, never took the wrong decisions feels naive to me. At the end of the day it's still a next token generator, an impressive one. It can hold context but not relate with anything outside that context. Someone needs to take accountability.

Are they just looking for AI skills? If so that's terrifying.
