I barely look at notifications anymore, it’s useless, does not group by app, can’t take any actions from there. Even if you open the app, the notification remains, so it’s just clutter at this point.
Clipboard does not exist.
Chrome sometimes when opened, opens up the address bar and there is no close button, I need to navigate away from the page I was on, or refresh. So I switched to safari, good job google.
The biggest annoyance would be the back button or rather the lack of it. Every app does it somewhere different. It could be a left swipe in some apps, a back button on top left, a tick box on top right. There is no mental model you can rely on.
Then I realized I am using it wrong. iPhones were never made for people like you or me. We just wants to finish our work as soon as possible. We zoom through multiple apps and get things done. iOS is for toddlers/old people and technologically challenged crowd. We need to think like them.
So I treat the notification shade just like other users, glance and ignore. No need to manage it or clear it.
Clipboard are needed when you copy multiple things. That’s because you want to paste multiple things. You are trying to do too much at the same time. Think of the most “simplest” person you know, they wouldn’t do what you’re doing. So I stopped doing that.
Back button was only an annoyance when I either used non-apple apps or do things fast. Again doing things fast is not what your simple friend would do. They would take time and each action, press, swipe would be deliberate, not careful yet confused.
Basically stop trying to be a smart person while using an iPhone. You might be a wizard in front of a terminal. iOS is designed for a large and specific set of audience and I truly respect Apple for catering to them. Most corporations like Google or Microsoft will try to teach their users and make them something they are not. Apple accepts them as they are.
This comment has a lot of grammar mistakes which I am frankly not going to fix. The apple keyboard is terrible to go in between words and sentences to edit them. But the target audience would never do it anyway and Apple proudly supports their decision by not improving the keyboard. I think that’s a noble thing to do.
Careful, some people are too hell bend on idealogies than making a reliable product. They'd never understand this.
This is one of the reasons why open source (free as in beer) will never work for anything serious. When my work depends upon a software someone made for free, there's an unnecessary power dynamic in play where since I didn't pay for it, they can rugpull me anytime. Before someone comes with the argument of forking, that's not how an economy works. I can't be the farmer, the truck driver, the salesman and sometimes even the buyer at the same time.
The kernel doesn't owe anything to the distros, which is insane, distros doesn't owe anything to the various libraries and vice versa, none of them owes anything to the application developers. It's a boat where each person is rowing in their own direction because they don't care what others does with their code and they don't have to. Because they are working for FREE®.
The effects of this is catastrophic. Everytime I try to switch, I can't find a single userspace application that works half as good as windows applications. People need incentives to make their work good, no one does anything for free. Free just means it sucks.
If microsoft/apple/google tomorrow releases their own distro, every single one will abandon their flavor of the week arch/ubuntu/mint/fedora for that one. One that's made by people in exchange for money. I bet the ubuntu developers use macbooks.
I see where you are coming from, I genuinely take it in good faith. There's just this constant pressure to be this or that at certain stages of our lives, especially in the asian culture I am part of. I've managed to avoid these all my life but lately I've been falling for it as well.
> I have been in poverty in my life, and I feel fortunate that we were able to escape it.
Genuinely happy to hear this. :) It gives a lot of hope.
> I have my own theories, but I'd be happy to know yours
It's a cultural thing, I have friends who haven't married yet because they feel they can't afford a family with their current circumstances. Here marriages are a family thing, so the parents need to approve. And no father or mother will send their daughter to such a person when they have more options available to them. You could live the frugal life or the glamorous instagram life people are brainwashed with. Everyone is running in a constant state of survive or die mentality because no one has a safety net to fall back to.
I am not saying all are like that, there are independent strong women/men but they are dime a dozen.
Most of us, educated, are aware of the fact that we are one medical emergency away from being bankrupt.
> No, you just need to live within your means.
I politely disagree. Means for me personally includes not worrying about healthcare, losing a job, unexpected expenses, affording the facilities to participate in society rather than becoming a travelling nomad. It’s easy to be blind to your own blessings, even more so if you have already lived a life. These are life goals for people of my generation in my country.
People, educated ones, are no longer marrying. Guess why?
We managed to make the latter irrelevant or by no means a high earner.
Everything is expensive, tech took over all the jobs, now tech itself has found ways to end those jobs. You either have to be a medical professional/media person now to live without worry.
I accepted a typo fix in a changelog while correcting it. Appears as tab to autocomplete for those unaware. Still seems like a reach.
If I am working on a real project with real people, it won’t have the complete memory of the project. I won’t have the complete memory. My memory will be outdated when other PRs are merged. I only care about my tickets.
I am starting to think this is not meant for that kind of work.
God I hope you are being funny. Why else would anyone install this crap?
I can still replay them to completion. Feel relieved when help arrives after securing the little hill after normandy beach in call of duty 2. It takes so long but it’s worth it.
I’ve only ever felt the core gameplay loop repetitive on strategy games where every new challenge is the same one as last but bigger with a more complex inventory if that makes sense.
Why should a file backup solution adapt to work with git? Or any application? It should not try to understand what a git object is.
I’m paying to copy files from a folder to their servers just do that. No matter what the file is. Stay at the filesystem level not the application level.
Which one you think companies prefer? Or if you're a consulting business, which one do you think your clients prefer?
