we actually tried copperhead at the very beginning as our base, too slow unfortunately.

oxygenOS ? lineageOS ?

we didn't accept money so far and won't till we have working phones reviewed by youtubers. The pre-order just reserves u a spot as we're doing limited batches. and oh boy I wish we had 50k on marketing, the website & content is done part-time by the same team working on the OS.

not sure how to proof we're legit, but here are some more links : from berlin university (https://bit.ly/2vDJHSs) & our trademark registration : https://bit.ly/2HoiXed (why would we bother if it was a scam?)

pictures are a mix of renders and post edited photos, the models changed over time as we tested / verified components

https://www.instagram.com/p/BgHeTAjFlmZ/, https://www.instagram.com/p/Bdxps6lHBE2 are not renders, yes we have working versions of phones. We're not accepting any money before youtube reviewers post their reviews (June) for now pre-ordering right now just reserves you a spot

thx for taking the time, will consider the feedback in our re-launch (we were working already on making our pos better) this thread took us by surprise while reworking it

mmm. that was more or less our initial concept in 2016 : https://www.instagram.com/p/BQ5hmZqhkNU/?taken-by=bllocphone. But the main feedback and learning was: you can't do without apps. Theres an app for everything and little things and you need it. (like the metro app for a tiny village somewhere) However overall UI design & flow matters, and currently everything is designed to make u more addicted. Try switching from an iphone to an older Android, install a minimalistic Launcher and you'll see how less you check facebook and the news. However its slow af and some apps won't work.

good observation! with this contrast 10% backlight is enough for almost 80% of lighting conditions. we initially used OLED and our phones after testing managed to use on average around 65% of the energy with our ui. We're dropping it unfortunately as its a supply-chain nightmare.. (for now). Black and white mainly increases your focus sharply

removing is easy, adding takes time and it depends on the app. shoot us an email which widgets you think are urgent

honestly its the lowest thats technically possible to sell. Good components just cost that much. After vat our margin is around 35 (pre-retail) which is lower than most vendors, meaning if we sell to retail we wont make a cent. it just costs that much to get tested, working components with decent manufacturing. If you find good specs cheaper trust me they used B-grade components that will break down sooner or later.

this reallly depends on usage, we wanted to send it to the real benchmarking websites when we release. I charge mine every 2 days which was a personal goal (to not get punished if I forgot to charge last night)

oh thanks for the heads up. Sticking to minimalism we wanted the checkout to be a one-stop checkout on the landing page experience. we should build a plan B
adhambadr··on Blloc – minimalist smartphone
we def. screwed up communication as we've been focused lately on finishing hardware. its based on Android 8.1 and the apps are downloaded via play-store normally. We don't white or black list, but rather are going through the most used apps and building easier integrations for them
adhambadr··on Dumber phone
yes just Android apps. We used a lot of the widget-interface functionalities most famous apps already did to build this simplified UI, it was a lot straight forward than we thought.

fair-point. we will also (try to) never do kickstarter. We're shipping in August.

Checkout our phone www.blloc.com .

I think its exactly what we thought of, dumbing down the smartphone to the bare essentials without missing out too much. we don't have it perfectly communicated (working on it), but we're trying to find the middle between a "smartphone" and full blown detox. We got inspired from some of our friends who went "dark" and didn't work out; we were as product designers sick of snapchat, gaming and the addicting viscous cycle however we still wanted to be in touch with some news, use uber and be sometimes reachable on whatsapp, messenger or telegram. We re-designed notifications to make it less distracting easy to turn off per app and most important functionalities reachable. Mainly theres no lock, you can lock some apps, but its ready to use (I was about to throw my iphone everytime it showed me 4 popups before i can use it).

check it out let me know if it would make sense if we create the possibility for people (or you) to extend it and build their own integrations / functionalities.

any plans to port it to mobile phones? If anyone worked on porting a touch-based input drivers I could contribute!

adhambadr··on What I Wish I'd Known About Equity Before Joining a Unicorn
It has always baffled me the way founders treat employees and investors so vastly asymmetric. Ive been involved in rounds close enough to see how just the "hint" of a potential investment and all the numbers, financials, cap tables are sent in one big email to their analyst, while some early employees (who controversially have worked just as hard as the founders) have no clue who owns what and whats going on. I get it without money we can't build anything, but without good employees everything else is multiplied by 0. The math in the article is unique to the U.S but I think the "essence" behind it is quite universal.

What stops founders from offering a company wide "vested Share vs. Cash" with an equal cap for everyone on each new round ? For e.g founders planning to sell 10% of their own share while raising round in the so called "Take money off table", all employees get the 'right' to exercise the same option, hence instead of dilution to the new value its straight selling the value they created ? what are the arguments against this ? For the investors its the same, and if the cap of how much of the vested % you get to sell is kept realistically low it should not risk decreasing the value of the private stock.

while i agree with Jaymzcampbell as an employee you're better off with dropping the "hope" the paper value of what you own means anything, however its contradicting to the popular piece of employee incentive tool that is quite essential in acquiring& keeping good talent.

adhambadr··on Ask HN: $8k on AWS in August for you, any interesting computations?
id rather spent my time writing infinitely nested while loops then talk to my accountant about one more topic

adhambadr··on Ask HN: $8k on AWS in August for you, any interesting computations?
Watsi sounds like an awesome organisation, but would they need such computing power within a month ? (the credit is only usable in August), if then can you connect me with them ?
adhambadr··on Ask HN: $8k on AWS in August for you, any interesting computations?
op: i planned to, but up till now everyone is either telling me to donate the transfer to an ongoing project (ignoring the fact they only get to use it in August) or stuff people want 'to start' building or want me to start doing. Still no solid lucrative suggestions, do you have a favourite suggestion here ?
adhambadr··on Ask HN: $8k on AWS in August for you, any interesting computations?
op here: to clear up I can't really 'donate' or transfer 8k or any amount to your account. I will just give you ssh access to the machine(s) you need. The 8k will also be gone if we don't use them before end of august, so whatever it is you wanna build it needs to be written and executed before that date
adhambadr··on Ask HN: $8k on AWS in August for you, any interesting computations?
-yup its a promotional credit (started at 10k), i didnt really buy it -nope I can't transfer it -yes my approach was simply to give the person/people access to my account -Its my fucking server and I can run whatever script I see fit .. but ok realistically maybe its not the best idea to give it to a commercial startup/project that has a legal entity to be sued. but I don't think its really that big of a deal to run some crawlers
