adenner··on Order your rapid tests from the USPS (US only)
This is on top of the 8 Home Rapid Antigen Tests per person per month that private insurance plans are now required to cover. (Check with your insurance provider for details as the roll out has been a bit chaotic) (Also not going into the issues of obtainability, fairness of paying out of pocket and waiting for reimbursement, Medicare and Medicaid not being included, etc.)
adenner··on Great AA Alkaline Battery Test (2016)
It is the safe option. At the least you should be up there validating that it works and as long as you are up there...
adenner··on Great AA Alkaline Battery Test (2016)
Just as a bit of feedback, for safety equipment like smoke and CO detectors, standard guidance is to replace the battery at least once a year. (Unless you have an integrated 10 year battery that will last the life of the detector)

If you live in an area that follows Daylight Savings time, doing it then is best so that you remember. Otherwise doing it during the Operation Edith drill for Fire Prevention Week is the next best.

adenner··on Why don't I have a blog?
There is a reason that mine has the subtitle of "it's like /dev/null but with more content" (https://denner.co/posts/)

I also mostly use it as a public brain dump for things that I don't want to forget.

adenner··on Rancher Desktop, a Docker Desktop Replacement

adenner··on Texas Instruments new TI-84 Plus CE Python graphing calculator
What version of python will it be? How complete will it be? Also, will you be able to add packages from pip via USB cable?

adenner··on Turkey’s currency plunges after the head of the country’s central bank is fired

adenner··on When X-Rays were used at the Shoe Store

adenner··on Advocates want to name heatwaves like hurricanes to raise awareness of dangers
In the US the weather channel tried to do the same thing for winter storms. No one else pays any attention to their names at all.
adenner··on Dots don't matter in Gmail addresses
As the lucky early adopter of gmail I got my last name only @gmail.com. It has been a blessing and a curse.

I have a boilerplate "you have the wrong address" email in multiple languages that I use to reply to the first email from real people. If they persist they then get added to my auto-reply "you have the wrong address" and delete rule.

For automated emails, I don't even bother trying to unsubscribe. They all get added to the delete blacklist rule.

Some of the more fun mistakes I have gotten have been multiple years worth of tax documents from New South Wales, Wine Tastings in South Africa, Church Choir concerts in Germany, and resumes for a receptionist in Colorado at a Gym.

Why not both?
adenner··on A theory of Zoom fatigue
You need someone to serve as the facilitator for the meeting and call out the order.
adenner··on Fork Bomb
The real issue is even with the limits, when the entire operating systems class was learning about forking it was really easy for a distributed fork bomb to occur.
adenner··on 23andMe lays off 100 people as DNA test sales decline
Half of it at least
adenner··on The Most Misused SSN of All Time
Even worse, I have a <lastname>@gmail.com address. I have gotten everything from multiple years of tax form from New South Wales to tickets to a wine tasting in South Africa. One of the most fun was church choir info from Germany. At this point I have a multilingual "You have the wrong address" email that I will send once and then create a rule with an auto-reply and auto-delete.
adenner··on When Nobody Shows Up to My Conference Talk

adenner··on Cppyy – Automatic Python-C++ bindings

adenner··on Show HN: tor_ssh.sh – One command to enable SSH access via Tor
I actually presented on something close to this a couple of months ago to the local LUG. I made a raspberry pi tor jump server that would allow you to ssh over tor into your home network to bust through the NAT. My slide deck is https://content.evernote.com/shard/s84/sh/00920ea8-78a7-4b1a...
adenner··on Ask HN: Why can’t I block all incoming calls that aren’t in my contact list?
I also am on Fi, the feature would at least get my attention. The biggest problem I would have currently with going to your service is the fact that it is on the Sprint network, currently the last place provider in my area.
adenner··on Why does APT not use HTTPS?
another option for a "secure" connection is to use the apt onion services from tor https://blog.torproject.org/tor-heart-apt-transport-tor-and-...

adenner··on Form a California LLC in 10 minutes for $70
Iowa has it good, $50 every two years for an LLC. The funny part is that they don't even have a form to fill out. You just have to print the right words on a paper and mail it to the Secretary of State's office with a $50 check...
