adelmotsjr··on The Lone Lisp Heap
As a Brazilian, i'll let my nationalism escape a little bit to say that it is awesome to see such an incredible work done by a fellow brasileiro. This gives me the same feeling of awesomeness that I get when I see José Valim's work on Elixir.

I only wish I could be as diligent and focused to do a thing like this, because I think it would be so much fun. I bought the Crafting Interpreters book a while ago, but still haven't got time to actually go through with it.

Well, maybe one day...

adelmotsjr··on WhatsApp defends 'optional' AI tool that cannot be turned off
"Personal information fuels much of AI innovation so people need to trust that organisations are using their information responsibly," it said.

No, we do not. First and foremost, in our current society, trust should be earned, and not understood as already given on first sight. Second, even if said trust is earned, it can be lost.

Most of these companies have shown, time and time again, that they cannot be trusted with personal information. To give credit, some companies do put up a disclaimer that you should not provide sensitive information. But that is only acknowledging that they are going to use in a public way, i.e. everything you feed into AI models is going to be public.

And finally, advances in AI do not require personal information. Not ever. Just because we CAN provide personal information, it does not mean we SHOULD provide it.

adelmotsjr··on You Need Subtyping
That does not address the fact that yes, inheritance is one type of subtyping polymorphism, and that many languages have them via OO paradigm.

Yes, there are other forms of subtyping, but saying that many languages don't have subtyping just because they don't have these other forms of subtyping is either cluelessness or satire.

Regarding n° 2, I think it will never be fixed, given the nature of the service itself, in which all emails are stored encrypted, and the encryption keys are in the server.

adelmotsjr··on Liskov Substitution: The real meaning of inheritance
From the article:

Again, kudos to Uncle Bob for reminding me about the importance of good software architecture in his classic Clean Architecture! That book is my primary inspiration for this series. Without clean architecture, we’ll all be building firmware (my paraphrased summary).

What does clean architecture have to do with building firmware or not? Plenty of programmers make a living building firmware. Just because they don't need/can't/want to apply clean architecture in their code, doesn't mean they are inferior to those who do.

Furthermore, after a snippet which I suppose it is in Kotlin, there is this:

While mathematically a square is a rectangle, in terms of behavior substitutability, it isn’t. The Square class violates LSP because it changes the behavior that clients of Rectangle expect. Instead of inheritance, we can use composition and interfaces

The Liskov principle is about one of the three types of polymorphism (so far): subtyping polymorphism. Which is about inheritance. Composition is _not_ subtyping. And interfaces (be it Java's or Kotlin's) are another type of polymorphism: ad-hoc. Even Wikipedia[1] has the correct definition:

Ad hoc polymorphism: defines a common interface for an arbitrary set of individually specified types.

Therefore, the examples of interfaces aren't compliant with LSP as well.

I understand the good intentions behind the article, but it left much to be desired. A proper research to at least fix the glaring errors should have been made beforehand.

adelmotsjr··on Books I Loved Reading in 2024
What book would you recommend for Physics?
adelmotsjr··on From where I left
Does it have something to do with the ambiguity of our language (english, spanish, _et cetera_) in contrast with formal languages? Like, it would require more mental effort to describe something in the English language, compared to describe an algorithm using language constructs: you know the constructs, and you know your restrictions in the programming language; in the English language, you don't know in advance what can you say and what you cannot, and you have to imagine what is your message going to get across in reader's minds. Well, who knows?

Anyway, absolutely love your books, have the Crafting Interpreters print copy (which has been inadvertently unboxed by my friend; did want it to be still in the plastic) despite using only the website version, and looking forward to buy the Game Programming Patterns. I hope you continue to be successful in your endeavours (especially if they result in legendary books like these :D). Also, could we be looking forward to a version of yours of a CPU architecture book, a la Nand2Tetris ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)?

adelmotsjr··on Sci-fi books that you may never have heard of, but definitely should read

adelmotsjr··on MIT leaders describe the experience of not renewing Elsevier contract
I think the issue is more than that though, because if the physical aspect were only the barrier, they should have disappeared by the time the Internet came along.

I think (and this is only my honest, outsider perspective) that the issue is, and always was, about trust. As in: who is this dude publishing this paper about high-energy particle physics? I don't know him, so I don't trust him. But I do know about Science, and Nature, and other Journals, so I'm gonna use them. That's why Elsevier and Springer and other publishers continued to exist.

Problem is, science isn't about trust. It's about knowledge, and more importantly, truth. But how do get the truth? Well, there's witnesses, and evidence, and Reproducibility™ of statements to produce facts. Y'know, science itself. If we could somehow resolve the reproducibility crisis of science, I think we would be one step closer to ending the parasitic mono-duo-oligo-whateverpoly of these publishers. Because then it would not be about who I trust to move forward the science enterprise. Instead it would be about facts themselves, and about confirming, via evidence and reproducibility of these facts, that would promote a piece of statement into knowledge. And that is how science should always have been, since the very beginning.

But the reproduction of experiments is a problem in itself, that might be the cause of the 'relying-on-trust' issue. Since not all experiments are a simple ./build-and-run.sh script, and some involve a lot of money (think anything in medicine, physics, geology, oceanography, and the list goes on to ∞), it ends up being about someone that is reputable and reliable that had money and did the experiment and published in some journal that I know.
