I do testing and quality assurance on a freelance basis. I can help you out with that - basically on all fronts. With my experience in multiple projects, I can throw in some light on the management problems related to testing, but I can also help you out with test analysis, design, with manual testing or test automation.

This is exactly why I love PowerShell.
adamhepner··on Show HN: CSV Explorer (YC F1) - Explore CSVs with Millions of Rows
I regularly test applications that generate big CSV reports. As I don't always have influence on the input data (we want to test on real datasets pulled from production servers of our partners), I fall back to defining constraints that must be satisfied. I ensure that they remain satisfied by analysing the csv files with powershell (of all the tools).

I just find the magic of "import-csv bla.csv | where some condition | select some existing or calculated value | group | format-list | out-file output.txt" to be extremely helpful, it's like SQL for the csv files.

And the ability to question live services and parse JSONs, and cross-check with other reports, or merge multiple reports into one... It's indispensable.

adamhepner··on Ask HN: What tools do you use for project management?
Holy hell, totally forgot about that one. Thanks!
adamhepner··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
Incidentally, that's something that I want to offer when expanding my freelance business into QA agency. Would you mind telling me more about what types of services would you see here? I have some ideas of my own, but I'm still struggling with market validation, so input from someone who says they could need it is invaluable!

adamhepner··on Adopting Feature Flag-Driven Releases
Funny thing is, that I've worked with multiple (unrelated) teams who simply refuse to use branches. This keeps boggling my mind (I usually don't work with code directly, since I am a tester, and focus on the end to end verification and validation, not with the details and unit tests), especially the argument that is used: "we want to move fast". On one occasion I could understand it, since they used SVN and externals, and each branching process somehow required 3 developers and 4-8 hours (I never bothered to drill down to the "why" behind those numbers, but I believe they mismanaged the sources, and used externals, where they should have been using just binary dependencies). Yet my current team uses git, and straight on decided that branching is too much hassle.

So yeah. Why?

adamhepner··on Show HN: Amium – A better way to collaborate
German companies are generally very cautious, if not just scared of any type of external hosting. I'm not sure in what way is that connected to legislation, but the way the EDV-departments (Elektronischdatenverarbeitung - electronic data processing) work in companies here is mind boggling. It's like the progress was happening here not thanks to IT, but despite its overreaching presence.
adamhepner··on Show HN: Noms – A new decentralized database based on ideas from Git
Not only public data. At my main project I'm testing systems that generally crunch data from various sources, and yes, most of them are in CSV format, and then we process them only slightly (some filtering, aggregation, translation), and spit other CSVs out. I was amazed that the company had not bothered creating more... civilized (?) solution for internal data processing - but I guess that since it works, there's no drive to change it on a whim.

adamhepner··on Docker for Mac and Windows Is Now Generally Available and Ready for Production
Wait now, hold on a minute. I'm very confused and curious how does this work?

Can I run any linux-based container on Windows? Can I run (are there any?) windows-based containers? If so, does it work the other way around: windows container on linux host? Does it somehow use the recently published Linux Subsystem for Windows, or is it completely different compatibility layer? If it is different, doesn't it seem like a waste of effort?

adamhepner··on The Dreaded Weekly Status Email
I started cooperating with external freelancers recently, and after 2-3 weeks of less-than-perfect communication, decided for GeekBot as well. I'm curious how will it play out in the long run, because first results are pretty promising.
adamhepner··on Car2Go Reduces Car Ownership, Transportation Research Center Finds
This is funny, I've just been in Berlin, and driving there (from pedastrian's perspective) seemed like a... difficult experience. Note: I currently live in Hamburg, and I recommend anyone coming to just ditch the car and come by plane/train, because the traffic rules are so crazy over here.

But seriously, the only feature that is missing from car2go in my opinion is the option to have someone get you your car to you, in case there isn't one available at the time. Also, I've only used the 2-person smart until now, I'm eager to see anything bigger soon. But anyway: when I lived in southern Germany I had to fuel up my car every 2 weeks or so, even though I had been driving mostly 15 minutes to work and back, and some light shopping. Here in north I tanked at the beginning of June, and still have to refuel. I just drive once a week to the market square, and for all other purposes I use metro system. On the other hand, this was fully inconviveable in the south, where distances were greater, and frequency lower. Every short ride was for me a huge endeavour, that took at least 40-50 minutes, definitelly not worth the time, hence I preferred to drive and sit in comfort.

adamhepner··on Sikuli: Automate Anything You See on Screen
Oh, you beat me to it. But the good news is, that SikuliX maintainer seems to be actively developing the next major release version now, and last release is not that old (end of 2015, where the technology don't have to change that rapidly)
adamhepner··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (August 2015)
SEEKING WORK - Tester, Test Manager, Quality Assurance - Southern Germany (Stuttgart and vicinity), remote definitely possible, part time only, B2B. Specialty: manual testing and grounding the testing and quality assurance processes. If your project is too small to warrant a full-time tester, let me know, I'd be happy to support you anyway, parallel to my main project which keeps me occupied 8h/day. If you need anything quality-related, including setting up automation, ask me. I do consulting and outsourcing, and if you just need someone to click around your app or site with more focused and fresh eye, either I or my intern can do it for you, with complete test report afterwards.
