adamauckland··on Big Tech is stoking unrest in the UK. Why?
37% of the voting population voted for Brexit, it wasn't anywhere near a majority.
adamauckland··on Can Europe train a frontier AI model on the compute it owns?
> all we got in the UK was the BBC Micro, way back in the early 1980s, and since then tech has been culturally uncool.

Off the top of my head, ARM is from Cambridge.

adamauckland··on Meta’s AI smart glasses and data privacy concerns
People send their private photos to their private cloud backups with the reasonable expectation that those photos remain private and therefore not a privacy violation.

If it transpired Google or Apple had staff looking through people's cloud photo backups, yes this would be considered a violation because "cloud backup" is framed as a personal solution and not a hosting or processing solution.

adamauckland··on Half million 'Words with Spaces' missing from dictionaries
The kettle was boiling water.

The chef was out the back, boiling water.

The chef was out the back. Boiling water had spilled everywhere.

The seas had turned to boiling water.

I dunno, could be down to interpretation.

adamauckland··on Tesla fined for repeatedly failing to help UK police over driving offences
Speeding is a criminal offence, lying about who was driving is punishable by prison.
adamauckland··on AI generated music barred from Bandcamp
"Share" is a big ask. Why should anyone be bothered to listen to something you couldn't even be bothered to write?
adamauckland··on AI generated music barred from Bandcamp
Art is all over the natural world, look at animals which build nests, arrange pebbles, choose shells etc.
adamauckland··on If AI replaces workers, should it also pay taxes?
He gets it on the healthcare like all developed nations.
adamauckland··on How Apple designs a virtual knob (2012)
There's a lot of people complaining "Why use knobs?" and a lot more people giving the reason "Because DAWs use them" without explaining why DAWs use them.

First, it's a visual representation of the value, and it's easier to map "Slightly more to the right" than "an extra 0.7"

More importantly, all DAWs can map physical control surfaces to the on-screen knobs, and control surfaces all use knobs and sliders.

adamauckland··on AI is an attack from above on wages": cognitive scientist Hagen Blix
Where's all this wealth going to come from if nobody has any jobs?
adamauckland··on Poisoning the Day
If you're a morning person and you're scheduling meetings for the morning you're literally wasting your period of productivity.
adamauckland··on People Are Sick and Tired of All Their Subscriptions
While physical media feels more valuable because you can hold it, share it with people etc, I'd suggest you didn't pay $3.99 for the video at Blockbuster, you paid for the event of going to the store, browsing the titles, maybe discussing with your friends/family what you want to see, grab some popcorn, there's trailers on the TVs. It feels a lot more special than just scrolling through Netflix
adamauckland··on How did the viral Willy Wonka experience go so wrong?
Lapland new forest 2008? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-11842396
adamauckland··on Is something bugging you?
I consider a "bug" to be "it was supposed to do something and failed".

Issues around business logic are not failures of the system, the system worked to spec, the spec was not comprehensive enough and now we iterate.

adamauckland··on OpenAI's employees were given two explanations for why Sam Altman was fired
There's entire studies on it, I saw a lecture by some English professor who explained how the brain isn't fast enough to parse words in real time, so runs multiple predictions of what the sentence will be in parallel and at the end jettisons the wrong ones and goes with the correct one.

From this, we get comedy. A funny statement is one that ends in an unpredictable manner and surprises the listener brain because it doesn't have the meaning of that one already calculated, and hence why it can take a while to "get the joke"

adamauckland··on A coder considers the waning days of the craft
Haha, does it involve timers?
adamauckland··on How Instagram scaled to 14 million users with only 3 engineers
It's pretty simple if your goal is using boring, stable technologies. Django/Postgres/Memcached/Redis/Nginx are all really stable.

I've built quite a few projects using almost exactly the same stack over the last 15 years. Almost all are still running, those that aren't are for business reasons not technical.

The problem is, they're not exciting The Next Thing real-time javascript somethings, so a lot of devs won't want to use it.

adamauckland··on TikTok fined €345M for breaking EU data law on children’s accounts
Why should the parent's deny the child a smartphone because Tik Tok has terrible data use policies?

You can also use Tik Tok on a laptop, but schoolwork is all online, what's the plan there?

adamauckland··on UK air traffic control meltdown
Stick a nail in
adamauckland··on Plastic Money
I remember doing the authorisation by phoning up a Streamline who would give you an authorisation code to put on the credit card form. I worked for Electronics Boutique and we couldn't give the games out without the code
adamauckland··on Elixir saves Pinterest $2M a year in server costs
Yes, but they were moving from enterprise JAVA which is considerably more verbose
adamauckland··on UK: Food inflation rises to 18.2% as it hits highest rate in over 45 years
You were born in London and say "gotten"?
adamauckland··on Testing GPT 4's code-writing capabilities with some real world problems
Because as soon as you tilt from producing features to fixing bugs, you are losing traction and your competitors will win and now you are bankrupt.

I've seen entire businesses collapse because of this mentality.

adamauckland··on Dutch man needs CPR, but YouTube shows ads before tutorial
Phone OS do most definitely have emergency services features allowing you to bypass normal OS functionality, yes.

Similarly, if you want to own the worlds information, you have certain responsibilities because people will go to you in an emergency.

adamauckland··on YouTube has become the world's nanny
> Isn't that only for age 13 and over

If your child has their own tablet set to their age, sure, but I know plenty of people who just let the kids use Mom's iPad

adamauckland··on Starting February 9, we will no longer support free access to the Twitter API
Because Twitter makes money from advertising not selling direct to end users.

I used to use Tweetbot which has now stopped working, as a result I don't use Twitter any more, the advertisers have lost one extra person to sell to.

adamauckland··on Show HN: I “wrote” a kid's book with ChatGPT and Midjourney
Unpredictability. ChatGPT writes stories like children do. Very wordy and boring. Then this happened then that happened.

Interesting stories have a set up and when you think you know what's going on, they switch, otherwise it's not a story, just narration.

The trick is those bait and switch differ culturally, depending on language of the reader, even the tastes of the reader, otherwise you don't get that "I was NOT expecting that" joy.

adamauckland··on Show HN: I “wrote” a kid's book with ChatGPT and Midjourney
Morality aside, an artist who entirely copies someone else's work would be looked down upon because they are not original or creating anything novel or new.
adamauckland··on Ask HN: Why do games (as media) make so much money?
What do people do to afford $30,000 throwaway wristwatches? There can't be that many of them in the world, that's the definition of the top 1%?!
adamauckland··on How web platforms collapse: The Facebook case study
Spotify only knows what you tell it.

Currently, you can add a Bio, links to social media sites and create an image gallery, but the admin section isn't particularly smart, I can't see anywhere to set specific data like band members or timelines.

Not sure who's expected to admin all of this though, I'm published on 30+ streaming music platforms including Spotify and iTunes and I don't have time to go round adding data to all of them.
