actionfromafar··on Gemini 4 Argon
Bribing season.
actionfromafar··on FTC is investigating OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies over product risks
Do you want this? Almost a USSR style system?
actionfromafar··on Why Is Sam Altman a Free Man?
He's a sock puppet being manipulated by anyone with access that day.
actionfromafar··on Why Is Sam Altman a Free Man?
The execute-anyone-on-the-streets system? That's a stretch to assume.
actionfromafar··on Why Is Sam Altman a Free Man?
Maybe someone worked as hard as Edison but did not succeed.
actionfromafar··on Why Is Sam Altman a Free Man?
Yes, words have different meanings depending on context.
actionfromafar··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
No, but in Trumpistan, does it matter?
actionfromafar··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
While I agree, these "military projects" are probably grifts, Russia style.
actionfromafar··on The End of a Fair Price: Dynamic Pricing and the Normalization of Gouging
Insurance companies "from each according to his ability, to each according to our needs".
actionfromafar··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
Load shedding = it was done on purpose, not that it was pre-planned. If a sudden problem occurs, some areas can be cut to prevent wider failure. I would expect this to be largely automatic.
actionfromafar··on US Forces Exit Iraq
It is?

It reports on some reactions.

actionfromafar··on Pirating the Pirates
I watched DS9 for the first time on streaming not too long ago, and it's really really good.
actionfromafar··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
Renault has a dog clutch.
actionfromafar··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
Think if it like this - is the turbine exhaust hot? Then you are losing energy.

You can extract more energy by adding stages but that increases weight.

While a small and light weight diesel engine is already very close to the theoretical limit.

actionfromafar··on Replacing the old battery on rechargeable bike lights
I don't recall that ever being a problem.
actionfromafar··on "As a Language Model": Chat Template Switches LLM Self-Referential Voice
Agreed, completely. I would pay for that Star Trek computer interface.
actionfromafar··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
How many suppliers have they designated a supply chain risk?
actionfromafar··on Meta Blocks President Lula's Facebook Page, Campaign Ads 2 Weeks from Election
Isn't it probably an n-tier system which is pay to play?
actionfromafar··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
There must be precedent if this is so normal.
actionfromafar··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
So... don't buy from Anthropic? How many of the US population is an adversary, according to your definition?

Say everyone had something to sell and DOD wanted to buy it. But some people wouldn't make the product changes DOD demanded. Now, they are the adversary of the DOD?

I hear Trumplandia is nice this time of year.

actionfromafar··on The mystery animal on an ancient god's head
I hope it's a deadpan joke that the dog can not only speak, but does so like any other bar patron.
actionfromafar··on Claude Opus 5.5
Would it believe that?
actionfromafar··on Can gzip be a language model?
Sounds like the best approach. :)
actionfromafar··on Suspension of the de minimis administrative exemption for imports $800 or less
The people in charge betting they only need to count the "red" ballots this time?
actionfromafar··on Amiga Unix, Again
Not that anybody needs to in this day and age with heaps of old laptops and raspberry pis and whatnot, but I knew someone with an Amiga running BSD for their mail server. A simple web server with static pages, or anything which is low volume would work just fine.
actionfromafar··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
But is it stupid if you want to sell some fossil fuels in the short to medium term?
actionfromafar··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
We might want to at least on the high seas to combat global warming a bit.
actionfromafar··on Two parallel neural ectoderm progenitors contribute to the developing brain
Depends on if the study is ongoing
actionfromafar··on Bend – a language that blocks AI mistakes via proof and runs on GPUs
Right. Feel free to extrapolate a reading like "I think LLM tech and a century of tinkering could achieve computer performance similar to what it appears the entirely fictional, voiced by Majel Barrett, Star Trek computers has".
actionfromafar··on Bend – a language that blocks AI mistakes via proof and runs on GPUs
The computer from Star Trek sounds like it could entirely plausibly have been made with LLM components and a century of harness tweaking piled on.
