actionfromafar··on Queryable Executables
Do you have any problems with antivirus or Defender complaining about the embedded VM?
actionfromafar··on More than half of adults in U.S. say they lack basic statistical understanding
Large bar.
actionfromafar··on My Friend Aaron
I think the passive narrator worked very well, a person kind of stuck in life would have had energy to spare for interacting with Aaron.
actionfromafar··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
They would have had to start building that fab 5-10 years ago. It would have been incredible foresight to do so and it would have looked insane.
actionfromafar··on HelloAssembly The smallest possible complete Windows application
Yes, you are right, must have been thinking of ntdll.
actionfromafar··on HelloAssembly: The smallest possible complete Windows application (2021)
Officially, one should not use KERNEL32.dll for instance but go via crt. In practice, most interfaces are stable.
actionfromafar··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
Centralisation also comes with upkeep necessary to maintain centralisation. The cost of that upkeep can severaly limit opportunity for change. If you are a dictator, staying in power is priority one, at the cost of everything else.
actionfromafar··on Moon (2024)
Also I was surprised to learn that the mass of the Moon is only 1% of Earth mass. I knew surface gravity is one sixth so I guess I sort of assumed that mass would be one sixth.
actionfromafar··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
Really? Surely it can't be unfamiliar at least. So many GOPs anxiously mentioning Dear Leader every chance they get.
actionfromafar··on The "File" menu isn't about files
Pierced the metaphor - elegant.
actionfromafar··on Scrap
Well some gulags produced heavy industries, now owned by oligarchs.
actionfromafar··on When the shortage is the strategy
China is also cooked.
actionfromafar··on Grand jury declines to indict Ohio man charged with destroying Flock camera
That's either a very shallow or deep question. :)
actionfromafar··on I like 'em thick: an apology to my English teachers
In retrospect, I think I have to apologize to my English teacher. I thought it was too ambitious having the class put on a Shakespeare play. But it was fun and we apparently learned a lot.
actionfromafar··on Ox Alpha
I don't think everyone uses these models for code.
actionfromafar··on Ox Alpha
They can, but I think we have to assume that as the field matures, the censoring will be applied at training, too.
actionfromafar··on I used to be excited about new tech, but I rarely am anymore
I can see now that my reading was uncharitable. Though I disagree with the last sentence of "not likely". Grandparents becoming FOX zombies is not a rare thing.
actionfromafar··on HTML Can Do That
At least one thing to hold the torrent of churn back just a little. Silver linings..
actionfromafar··on Sectorforth is a 16-bit x86 Forth that fits in a 512-byte boot sector (2020)
No, it makes sense now that you say it. :)

It's not large.

actionfromafar··on Canonical Backs New Project to Translate Large C Codebases into Safe Rust
That would be amazing. A C to Rust port could start out with Rust with only a fn main() at first, then progressively moving more and more stuff "up" from the C program into Rust, making it faster and faster.
actionfromafar··on Sectorforth is a 16-bit x86 Forth that fits in a 512-byte boot sector (2020)
Any opinion on which Forth implementation is good for 8-bit CPUs, in particular 8051?
actionfromafar··on I used to be excited about new tech, but I rarely am anymore
Which one is it? Bubbles are dangerous but not the Fox bubble?
actionfromafar··on A decades-old bug in Knuth's long division (TAOCP Vol II, Algorithm 4.3.1D)
But but... that's all serif.
actionfromafar··on How does IKEA come up with names for its products?
They tried for a while to call everything .NET
actionfromafar··on PostgreSQL for Everything
Didn't very early mysql play fast and loose with the concept of actually syncing to disk? That was also fast. Web scale fast. :)
actionfromafar··on A 3D fruit fly on macOS desktop powered by the real FlyWire connectome
Now this is real AI.
actionfromafar··on I used to be excited about new tech, but I rarely am anymore
The kids don't seem very excited anymore either from what I can tell.
actionfromafar··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
These 2 sources say nothing about Heard using bots, only Depp.
actionfromafar··on People are worried about America's solvency
He's the Dear Leader!
actionfromafar··on People are worried about America's solvency
It's just that I think that it ever come to servicing debts by printing money instead of borrowing, "shock therapy" would result. Not from the UBI proposal, but from the world order crumbling. And when chaos comes, there's always a small number of people on top taking advantage. Exactly who gets to run Gas Town may not possible to know in advance, but someone will.
