acquacow··on Ask HN: What (almost) company sinking engineering mistakes have you witnessed?
Running McAfee products on all production servers.

Lots of issues historically, and recently for that.

acquacow··on KeePassXC 2.7.0
Anyone know an easy way to keep it matching domains when the subdomain changes?

eg: account.domain.com changes to signon.domain.com at some point and it stops matching.

I've gone in and saved some accounts as just domain.com to prevent this, but when creating new passwords/etc, it always adds the current URL and the problem happens again after some time.

Thanks!

acquacow··on I wrote Task Manager and I just remembered something (2020)
He literally just posted a video a few days ago about the task manager too.
acquacow··on DSLRs are dead, and lenses are never going to be the same
The rubber grips are cheap and take 20mins to replace.
acquacow··on DSLRs are dead, and lenses are never going to be the same
The thing is, the people who use software bokeh don't care about how bad it looks. They see a blurred background and they are happy.

I dropped to a micro 4/3rds setup for walking around for this very reason. The lightest body and 2-lens setup I could configure was about 5-6lb depending on how many spare batteries I wanted to carry as well.

My 4/3rds setup with flash, 5 lenses, and a few batteries was only 2.2lb. I don't even notice I'm wearing it.

There isn't a real comparison with low light mode on phones vs what the best SLRs can do at high ISO at night.

Phones are now using a combination of photo stacking and HDR in order to achieve pretty ridiculous low-light results.

You could certainly sit there with an SLR and bracket half a dozen shots and then stack/HDR them in post, but that is a lot more work and can't be uploaded to facebook/instagram seconds later ;)

acquacow··on How many people have Q Clearance?
It is definitely not for handling nuclear weapons-related information only. It's as generic as a normal TS in that agency and is even given temporarily to people coming in from outside agencies with a TS/Poly for meetings.
acquacow··on I'm “still afraid to use spaces in file names” years old
I did that on my NAS a few years ago. I had copied in a bunch of directories from a mac and they all had tons of dot files in each dir that were showing up on my windows machines. I popped open a terminal and did the exact same thing and wiped most of the NAS out =P Good thing I had it mirrored with my other synology.
acquacow··on MiSTer, an open-source FPGA gaming project
My buddy recently did a really nice video overview of the MiSTer project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IP0k3GatHE
acquacow··on Remembering Windows 3.1 themes and user empowerment
I spent years making litestep themes and moderating theme submission on litestep.net I still have a mirror up of the old owns.com minimalism site as well.

http://dave.oc7.org/minimalism/themes.shtml

Some folks still run litestep, but it's definitely not the community it was. We still have a small chat presence on discord and that is about it.

There was a free/shareware app for Apple's OS 6/7/8 called Kaleidoscope. It was a resource editor that would let you change pretty much any aspect of the desktop interface. Apple folks definitely had customization before OSX, but not sure if OSX killed that entirely or not.
acquacow··on Setting up your own Nextcloud instance to get off of Google
Non-static IP, all done via dns updates. Never had an issue.
acquacow··on Setting up your own Nextcloud instance to get off of Google
I use it over gigabit fios and get 68MB/sec transfer speeds to/from my nextcloud instance at home. I don't usually get that much with google drive/etc...
acquacow··on Setting up your own Nextcloud instance to get off of Google
Setup nextcloud 2 years ago as part of a FreeNAS install. It runs in a jail and dumps my files to the local, shared filesystem as a result. I also put the nextcloud clients on my phone so that my photos auto-upload to my NAS vs google photos. It's been quite nice to be able to just drop files to it, right click, then share someone a link to those files.

The point is, that is how this should be done.

acquacow··on New, slippery toilet coating provides cleaner flushing, saves water
You can put a small sump pump with a pressure switch in the bucket, and an overflow setup back into the normal drain. This way when the toilet flushes, the sump will kick on and fill the toilet and keep pressure on the water line feeding it. Any excess sink water will overflow out the upper hose on the bucket and go into the normal drain.

acquacow··on Adobe deactivates all Venezuelan accounts
The new Dehaze and Texture sliders, plus improved highlight recovery are highly worth it. Also, the latest version is finally optimized and about 2-3x faster than all prior versions.

acquacow··on Ten years on LinkedIn
I get several legitimate job hits a month from various recruiters... I kind of like to keep linked-in current and updated just in case my industry folds again... makes it quick and easy to ping the dozen or so hungry recruiters and get myself placed elsewhere.
acquacow··on Ask HN: Who's making $300k to $1m as a cloud engineer?
Sales engineer chiming in... You can certainly come close, though I've never hit it... depends on the year/etc...

I do a lot of architecting of cloud storage solutions involving flash storage in my role. Lots of work to engineer solutions into existing hardware/environment, some rip and replace... Not sure if that makes me a technician or not...

acquacow··on What we learned about SSDs in 2015
They use flash like all other SSDs, but don't use a disk controller or any community defined protocols for mass compatibility. They use their own software and an FPGA to control the flash.
acquacow··on What we learned about SSDs in 2015
No, Fusion-io has nothing to do with spinning drives. They make PCI-e flash drives with an FPGA as the "controller" for the flash. There are multiple communication channels, so you can simultaneously read and write from the drives, and there are various tunings available to control how garbage collection works. They are the only "SSD" that doesn't hide all the flash behind any kind of legacy disk controller or group protocol like NVMe
acquacow··on What we learned about SSDs in 2015
...unless you are Fusion-io, in which case, most of these problems don't affect you.
