acollins1331··on The world’s climate goals are not sufficient. They are also unlikely to be met
There's a difference between putting your thumb on companies, and an entire sector. Knee jerk hate for industry wide regulation makes no sense, it's precisely the job of the government to set the standards of operation for a particular market.
acollins1331··on Google to restrict political adverts worldwide
But full ban costs Google money.
acollins1331··on Her Amazon Purchases Are Real, the Reviews Are Fake
It shouldn't be that hard to find an alternative to whole foods. I also question your need to install surveillance in your own home at all.
acollins1331··on Alan Moore on superhero culture
Sure, you shouldn't "always" escape like you say, but I don't think the people the author is criticizing are watching marvel movies 12 hours a day.
acollins1331··on Some users say they're getting rid of Fitbit because they don't trust Google
Fitbit is a terrible product. Enjoy paying smart watch prices for a tiny screen that tells you your heart rate.
acollins1331··on Sweden Drops Julian Assange Rape Investigation
How does that prosecutor sleep at night knowing they lie for a foreign government? I also thought Sweden was supposed to be one of the countries that actually cared about human rights, too.
acollins1331··on Is there any data that says secondhand car seats aren’t safe?
This is false, the data was selectively biased. Stop spreading misinformation. The "data" you talk about says that seat belts are about as effective as car seats at preventing death, which is true. However the data that is ignored in that study is that they are far better at preventing severe injuries to children. Please look into what you say when people believing your bullshit could severely injure a young child.
acollins1331··on Distilling knowledge from neural networks to build smaller and faster models
https://jacobgil.github.io/deeplearning/class-activation-map...

Not sure how that would work with a segmentation algorithm like Unet though. It makes more sense in showing where in an image that the network was activated to give the image a label. AFAIK Unet gives ever pixel a label so I don't see how you could do what the parent describes.

acollins1331··on John Carmack: I’m going to work on artificial general intelligence
Maybe general intelligence is not a goal to pursue, isn't general intelligence of machines what would eventually lead to the 'singularity' that seems far away now but is plausible in theory? Maybe John's real last name is Connor.
acollins1331··on John Carmack: I’m going to work on artificial general intelligence
Seems to me you're just describing reinforcement learning. Youre just saying a human child can adapt to the new problem faster than the AI can adapt, which is true but not the argument you've been making in this thread.
acollins1331··on Diamonds Keep Getting Cheaper
The growth in demand isn't keeping up with population growth because young people are not getting married, don't have enough money, read on the internet who mines the diamonds. Screw diamonds and the idiots who are upset they are getting cheaper.
acollins1331··on Why was it believed that the Aztecs greeted Cortés as a deity?
I didn't say that all religious people were like that.

I said religious people that just listen to what a religious figure says and believes it are. Which is what we were discussing happened with the Aztecs. If a christian does it it's also ignorant.

What you describe isn't ignorance. Stop trying to make me seem unreasonable by distorting my arguments.

acollins1331··on Amazon’s plan for Alexa
No but they'd be the only people in a Facebook group complaining about it
acollins1331··on Deep learning has a size problem
I disagree. There are lots of advancements that DL has yet to fully realize with even the current technology. You're focused on commercial applications but applying neural network models, especially CV models to many types of scientific research has yet to be explored due to lack of funding.
acollins1331··on Andrej Karpathy talks about how Tesla's NNs are structured and trained [video]
I think the diversity you see in cameras and lidar placement and existence is worth it enough to have different paths forward. Tesla seems insistent that it can be done sans lidar. It's definitely worth it to see which approach works best.
acollins1331··on One-Percenters Close to Surpassing Wealth of U.S. Middle Class
His rhetoric and promises during campaigns
acollins1331··on One-Percenters Close to Surpassing Wealth of U.S. Middle Class
You saw it take hold in 2016. Obama got the populist votes, and then Trump did. People wonder how the same people could vote for both, the common thread is populism.
acollins1331··on First New HIV Strain in 19 Years Identified
Someone doesn't understand how healthcare research is done.
acollins1331··on A Study of Meditation Under the Influence of Psilocybin
There is a reason the many eastern religions that were the inspiration for a lot of new age ideas forbid drugs and alcohol. While you can have drug induced trances similar to meditation, in Zen they call it "losing your self", the entire point is to be able to develop that skill and point of view without a chemical aid. Not only is it a problem by being used as a crutch as you describe, but there's no guarantee it's experience is similar enough to naturally losing your self to be useful in the same ways.

Cool study though

acollins1331··on FCC approves T-Mobile and Sprint merger
Both these companies are jokes. I had 45 prepaid 4g a month with Sprint and switched to the a prepaid program with Verizon that costs the same amount but gives me 16gb a month, and I actually have service on the islands.
acollins1331··on For Sale: Sat-Takers’ Names. Colleges Buy Student Data and Boost Exclusivity
I don't need to make a throwaway account to tell the parent that they probably don't want to live in Texas.
acollins1331··on How to Set Your Google Data to Self-Destruct
Does anyone have any insight on what actually happens to this data? Is it really deleted or just stored in a warehouse somewhere inaccessible to me but accessible to some snooping government or hacker?
acollins1331··on Separating gifted children hasn't led to better achievement
This seems like it's probably very wrong.
acollins1331··on Journal will publish heavily criticized paper on gender differences in physics
The quickest way to get a cultural shift in a technical office is to go from 98% male to 70% male. Things get real different real quick. There's no reason to leave gender out of culture shifts, except that you don't like it.
acollins1331··on Twitter to ban political advertising
We don't let blatantly false ads run on TV. Why is it so hard for Facebook or Twitter to do the same thing?
acollins1331··on Spanish government orders GitHub to take down Tsunami Democràtic repository
Sure, that's what you'd want. And everyone in the police here wants video and audio recording of every persons movement at all times so they can solve every crime.

Sometimes the police want bad things.

acollins1331··on IRS Tried to Hide Emails That Show Tax Industry Influence over Free File Program
ESA section 7 assessments are insanely cheap, especially in cities. Maybe hire a different consulting firm. We would walk up and down the road, if it was completely urban and there is no habitat for the species you literally don't even need to look. The people who do the checking get paid about $20/hr. Sounds like someone is lying to you about why projects aren't being funded.
acollins1331··on IRS Tried to Hide Emails That Show Tax Industry Influence over Free File Program
This is 100% opposite my experience in wetland water quality permits. Sorry your state has super corrupt army corps districts. Ours (NC) let's all kind of stuff slide, but we still do thorough work that meets all applicable regulations even when the assessor insists they don't need the entire NRTR.
acollins1331··on Steve Wozniak: 'I've given up' on Level 5
Great idea, maybe you should call Waymo.
acollins1331··on Steve Wozniak: 'I've given up' on Level 5
That's not something you'll find a citation for. As someone who has worked in the industry it's not as simple as "see child; stop". What's also happening behind you? Beside of you? Do you swerve? How quickly do you stop?

You're very right that OD works great, that doesn't mean you can train a neural network to make the right decision though.
