achow··on Transgenic Golden Rice, once hailed as a dietary breakthrough
On the other hand in 50-60s...

..The Government of India signed an agreement with the Rockefeller Foundation to carry out research to achieve higher food production. The program started with research for the development of suitable hybrids of maize followed by hybrids of sorghum and pearl millet.

The dwarf wheat bred by Dr. Borlaug in Mexico, named Sonaro 4 and Larmarojo, were introduced. These efforts created an agricultural revolution.

I consider myself a farmer and used to grow wheat on 80 acres. I was very happy to harvest about 500 quintals every year – about six quintals (600 kg) for every acre. The planting of Sonaro 64, with the agronomic practices recommended, led to a harvest of 20 quintals (2000 kg) an acre, which was more than three times the previous yield.

I remember three to four years after the introduction of those seeds, India’s wheat production expanded significantly, and quite rapidly India became self-sufficient in food.

achow··on Pendency of Cases in India
Problem identification is good. It is in realm of 'painkiller' problem. Huge TAM. Solution for one market can potentially scale to other ones, etc. Why now is also kind of clear (LLMs).

However,

- No indication of who are people behind it? No website, No Linkedin, not even an email!

- What is their credential? What would make them successful than others?

- What is their unique take on this very very old problem?

[Edit].. And then these kind of hyperbole are red flags (hustler mindset and not 'thoughtful' one)..

- enabling cases to be resolved within 48 hours from the comfort of one's home.

- ensure that justice is served swiftly and fairly for every individual

Quick search..

Trudeau government had spent $66 million on sole-sourced McKinsey contracts since coming to power in 2015... under the Liberals McKinsey contracts have “exploded” by a factor of 30, according to Radio-Canada. This is particularly true at Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, where insiders have fingered McKinsey with designing the Trudeau government’s policy of dramatically ramping up immigration to unprecedented levels.

achow··on You are what you read, even if you don't always remember it
There is a subtle difference to that than what the author was trying to say in his blog.

The thing is when we read, particularly in growing years, the expectation is that we would remember most of things from the book and apply it somewhere else, ex. in a discussion "...agree, the same I gathered from this excellent book that I read couple of years back...".

And frankly, I'm bummed by it still. I read a lot but when certain situation comes I cannot remember things & facts vaguely, even though I had finished 300 pages of that page turner in one night.

Unlikely that these are mockup screens. The clock (top left) shows that this would be atleast a working prototype app.

The 3D map view is intriguing, I wonder where they are sourcing those from.

I always wondered if Spotify could do it for music (which I think are much more zealously protected), why there is no similar service for news articles?

Is it because a news article is one time consumption, whereas music is not?

achow··on Former University of Iowa hospital employee used fake identity for 35 years
> University of Iowa Police Detective Ian Mallory.. tested the father’s DNA against Woods’ DNA. The test proved Woods was the man’s son.

Such an obvious thing to do.

Why it had to reach to University police for this to be initiated, why LA police did not do this at the start? Why the judge who sent the real Woods to mental hospital asked this to be done before giving that 'judgement'?

achow··on How Hertz’s bet on Teslas went sideways
Right.

The key takeaway for me, they being wall street people - customer empathy was missing.

101 of salesmanship - understanding of customers needs, desires and then selling solutions for those. Here their customers were out of town weary travelers wanting to have a hassle free quick ride to a hotel or a meeting; have not used EVs before (perhaps never intend to), now have to focus on a new problem - how to learn a new skill of handling EV, how to plan for charging during their multi day trips.. etc.

achow··on When Will the GenAI Bubble Burst?
> At least one company must..

> Find some huge problem(s) that they can charge a lot for.

> Ship a solution to that problem at a reasonable price.

> Whatever they sell must give customers enough confidence to merit adoption.

You know which company is this?

This is any of the million of companies, who build products based upon customer need and sells with reasonable or great profits - whether it is in space of consumer or enterprise.

Pureplay GenAI should only strive to serve these compamnies (via APIs). GenAI companies would have very hard time understanding end users and designing product as per their needs or domain specific workflows. Chat interfaces does not count as product building.
