achow··on OpenAI reveals why ChatGPT won't say "David Mayer"
There were other names too. What kind of 'glitch' it could be?

Also found to crash the service are the names Brian Hood, Jonathan Turley, Jonathan Zittrain, David Faber, and Guido Scorza. (No doubt more have been discovered since then, so this list is not exhaustive.)

achow··on The decline and fall of the British economy (2022)
Perhaps.

Banks became more important for financing industrial growth, as entrepreneurs and business owners needed more capital. The Bank of England was created in 1694 to fund wars, and was given a monopoly on joint stock banking in 1708.

Once the great minds of the country understood that there are easier ways of multiplying their wealth (trade, colonisation, wars..), one can imagine the shift in their priorities - from investment in engineering to financing agents of wealth creation.

The London Stock Exchange was founded in 1773.. Amsterdam saw its first stock market appear in the early 1600s. But the modern stock exchanges only emerged later during this era in London and New York.

achow··on Standing desk isn't making you any healthier
Mentioned right in the article:

Those hours of standing also turned out to have their own downsides, increasing people’s likelihood of developing serious circulatory problems, including varicose veins, abnormally low blood pressure and blood clots, compared with people who rarely stood.

“To improve your overall health and lower your risk of heart disease, you have to mix in actual movement,” he said.

BobMu left Microsoft because he was not sold on cloud, he was an advocate for 'on-prem' solutions (and for its time it made sense since enterprise customers were against cloud).

For a continuous duration of nearly 1700 years from the year 1 CE, India was the world's largest economy, constituting 35 to 40% of the world GDP.

achow··on Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon
Israel's Mossad spy agency planted a small amount (3 gm) of explosives inside 5,000 pagers made by Gold Apollo (a Taiwanese company). "The Mossad injected a board inside of the device that has explosive material that receives a code." 3,000 of the pagers exploded when a coded message was sent to them.

Gold Apollo founder Hsu Ching-Kuang said the pagers used in the explosion were made by a company in Europe that had the right to use the Taipei-based firm's brand, "The product was not ours. It was only that it had our brand on it"

Hezbollah fighters have been using pagers as a low-tech means of communication in an attempt to evade Israeli location-tracking,

achow··on Notes on OpenAI's new o1 chain-of-thought models
What I'm not able to comprehend is why people are not seeing the answer as brilliant!

Any ordinary mortal (like me) would have jumped to the conclusion that answer is "Father" and would have walked away patting on my back, without realising that I was biased by statistics.

Whereas o1, at the very outset smelled out that it is a riddle - why would anyone out of blue ask such question. So, it started its chain of thought with "Interpreting the riddle" (smart!).

In my book that is the difference between me and people who are very smart and are generally able to navigate the world better (cracking interviews or navigating internal politics in a corporate).

achow··on Intel stock tumbles as Dow status questioned
Poor Pat Gelsinger is left holding the ball.

The decline started with previous CEOs, who not only missed infamous big pieces (mobile, GenAI etc.) but also missed the datacenter play which was there for taking; AMD came out of nowhere and capitalised.

achow··on Apple explores robotics in search of life beyond the iPhone
There are many technical problems to overcome, including having hardware that can successfully roam through cluttered spaces and navigate buildings with multiple floors...

...For now, the technology is going to be incredibly expensive for both Apple to build and for consumers to buy. The company is also going to need more talent, including many more engineers, to bring something truly meaningful to market.

Why can't Apple acquire Boston Dynamics? BD may have solved lot of these problems already, and to boot would have lot of patents, which Apple would be glad to have. BD in 2020 was acquired by Hyundai for $1.1B.

achow··on Renderings Created with Only a Pencil
Those who are curious about the tools part..

He uses Mitsubishi Uni pencils. His recommendation of sharpening the pencils "[Make the exposed pencil lead long] By making it sharp and long, the sharp will continue and it is easy to re-sharpen"

His YouTube video [1] shows his collection of pencils (the various grades) and the meticulous attention to pencil sharpening - which seems to be in two stages, the first is using a normal mechanical pencil sharpener and then the second stage is handcrafting the length of the lead.

achow··on Troubled Amazon drone delivery program faces latest challenge: Annoyed residents
I always wondered why people were not thinking of noise when they think of package delivery drones. Even the garden variety light weight drones makes quite an amount of noise.

This is the same reason that 'flying cars', which in many sense are big drones, is very unlikely to be an everyday thing.
