aceperry··on At Theranos, Many Strategies and Snags
For awhile, I kept seeing job posts at Theranos, which is how I know the name. I didn't know whether they were expanding or just had high employee turnover. The WSJ articles and the strange Glassdoor reviews (either totally love the company and CEO or extremely negative about the company and its ethics) leads me to believe that the WSJ is correct. The latest article with the video interview of the CEO, makes me think that she is incredibly smooth at spouting the BS, to the point of being a pathological liar. This company will be VERY interesting to watch during the coming year.

"Build the hardware with 100% Arduino Compatibility"

That was his first mistake, :-) I like arduino for fast, quick and dirty stuff, but for a finished product, I'd rather try to do a closer to bare metal implementation. But otherwise, very cool project.

aceperry··on Tinkercad – Create 3D digital designs with online CAD
Actually, you can use it for free if you're a business making less than $100,000/year. Or something like that, I forgot the exact terms, but it's quite generous. The terms are shown when you first install and register the program.

Genuino is not UNIX
aceperry··on Phuc Dat Bich Is Beyond Tired of Getting Kicked Off Facebook
He should rename his profile to, "the Notorious PDB."

Vietnamese names can be a little strange. In college, I had a professor whose first name was usually given to women. All of my Vietnamese friends thought the prof was a woman when they first heard the name.
aceperry··on A Way to Detect Bias
The effect would result in the same situation, but the cause is much different.
aceperry··on A Way to Detect Bias
That's possible. Without concrete data to give you, there are some suspicions that because of the much better performance of Asian students, they're being limited in the admissions process. Otherwise, Asian students would make up the vast majority of the students admitted. This would crowd out the non-Asian students accepted for admission. In this case, it would be more accurate to say that admissions officers limit the number of Asian students accepted instead of saying admissions folks are biased against Asian students.
aceperry··on Larry Wall Unveils Perl 6.0.0
Larry Wall is a great guy. Unfortunately, I don't really like Perl. Maybe the new version will change my mind.
aceperry··on New Windows 10 Devices From Microsoft
That's a disturbing trend that I hope doesn't continue.
aceperry··on New Windows 10 Devices From Microsoft
I'm amazed that Microsoft has introduced a laptop that is worthy of going head to head with the best. All of the specs look great and it looks like it could possibly replace my beloved Chromebook Pixel (the original). If linux can be installed on it easily, it would probably be my next computer.

Very interesting to see a "pen first" interface which I hope works much better than that shitty "touch first" interface in Windows 8. I don't care what the fanbois say, windows 8 sux! Windows 10 is a major improvement in usability compared to 8, so I hope MS is back on track to making productive systems. If the new surface book works as good as it looks, MS is back on track to being relevant in the computing landscape.

aceperry··on Introducing Pixel C
Interesting, what other characters are in your password?
aceperry··on Introducing Pixel C
How do you know that it runs ARM?
aceperry··on Dialog Semiconductor to acquire Atmel for $4.6B
Nice summary of Atmel. I had no idea that Atmel was not doing well. Atmel has the basic arduino business, although a lot of other architectures, especially newer and more powerful ones, are using the arduino framework for their CPUs. Even the newest official arduino platform is ARM based.

I'm constantly reading about how the 8-bit market is still doing well, despite the emergence of ARM. Even though the AVR hasn't really innovated much, it has picked up a lot of peripherals and low power modes which has kept the AVRs from being strictly in the bargain basement MCU market. I don't think there has been much innovation in the 8-bit market, but the AVRs have a really good programming model, especially compared to the 8-bit PICs. I don't know if that's enough to give AVRs a shot at new designs, but they're one of the best 8-bit options today, IMHO.

aceperry··on Ask HN: It is difficult to find a company to sponsor a visa for a junior dev?
Where are you from? That might be a big deciding factor in what you should do.
aceperry··on Unity Comes to Linux: Experimental Build Now Available
Same here. In fact, I use the standard Unity based Ubuntu on my desktop only. I prefer to use a more traditional desktop environment like XFCE on all of my other machines and laptops. The Unity desktop is tolerable and not too difficult to get used to and switch back and forth from XFCE, unlike windows 8.

The Unity3D game engine announcement is awesome and they've been really changing the face of game dev.

aceperry··on Literary Magazines for Socialists Funded by the CIA, Ranked
Which brings up the interesting situation of the linux kernel. Lots of corporations (with their own agendas) have contributed alongside with lots of independent devs.
aceperry··on Inside Amazon: Wrestling Big Ideas in a Bruising Workplace
Sorry to hear about your experiences there. But I think it's good that you've realized that it wasn't your fault and you have a good perspective on the whole experience.
aceperry··on Windows.exe has crashed
LOL, so cool.
aceperry··on Eating Our Own Dog Food: Behind the Scenes at Cloud9
I've noticed a huge improvement over time and am really impressed with how well it works now. I forget when I first used c9, but it was more of a novelty than a productive tool. I'm also really enjoying the way the terminal works, feels integrated.

I've never tried the nested stuff, or would even think of it, but it sounds pretty cool. Hope to see more improvements and features in the future.

aceperry··on The $9 CHIP Computer Reveals Its Open Source Details
I'm glad to have helped fund the kickstarter. It was advertised to come with a linux distro but at the time but they didn't have many details about that. Glad to see that they're becoming part of the mainline kernel. Developments like this are going to increase the popularity of linux and smaller computing devices.
aceperry··on Ex-Googler says she exposed company-wide pay inequality with spreadsheet
LOL

Sounds like the unfortunate result of PHBs who don't have any common sense or backbone to support their team. The fact that Erica's manager rejected the "peer bonuses" given to Erica suggests that her manager is really unfit to be a manager.

aceperry··on Integrating Leap Motion with Intel Edison
The Edison has a dual core atom cpu. Don't really know how powerful it is, but it's pretty powerful for a small cpu.
aceperry··on Integrating Leap Motion with Intel Edison
I was disappointed in how the leap motion was integrated with the Edison. The article uses a computer to talk directly to the leap motion and has a program send simple commands to the edison. You can do the same thing with an arduino board, no need for an Edison. I was at a hackathon where both the Edison and leap motion were available, but I couldn't figure out how to integrate the edison with the leap motion easily, or within a weekend. Wish the leap motion was a little more portable, especially for embedded systems like the Edison. That could really drive the leap motion's popularity.

First glance at the headline had me wondering, "Is this a good thing?"
aceperry··on The Gig Economy
"assuming that somehow Uber pulled that off and they'll be the world's largest employer in less than a decade"

LOL, I thought Uber was trying NOT to be classified as an employer with respect to their drivers.

Even if they hired close to that many women, the announcement seems to be more of a stunt for positive publicity than anything, their drivers lack all of the basic protections and benefits that many public school teachers receive.

In reality, the political clout of the "Public School Teachers" is much less than the total 2.7m members since they're made up of many different unions. As opposed to Walmart, which is a single company that has much more power over their control of the workplace and employees. Right now it seems that Uber has even more clout over their drivers than Walmart has over their employees.

aceperry··on Tablet Sales Have Plateaued but There’s a Future in Business
My experience too, but it's strange to hear that the article mentions workers using or bringing in their own tablets for work. I have to wonder what they use it for.
aceperry··on An open source Xilinx Spartan 6 miniPCIe development board
This. Although I think Altium is the more offensive toolset. The real fly in the ointment for open source hardware is the proprietary tooling.
aceperry··on An open source Xilinx Spartan 6 miniPCIe development board
Excellent looking design. This could become a big deal for the maker community. I'm glad to see so much open source stuff coming out for hardware.

That didn't happen in mobile. In fact iOS and Android made Microsoft's mobile efforts look silly.
