accrual··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
That sounds pretty cool and even in the spirit of OpenBSD a little. Is it just plain HTML, POST forms, something simple on the backend to collect the orders, etc.?
accrual··on Claude Haiku 5.5
Vim is indeed cool. So is mg. I'd argue so is having my graphics card performing work on my behalf.
accrual··on Claude Haiku 5.5
Like most things, it depends. Think of the web devs of yore with MacBook Pros and Angular and React and Vim stickers stuck aside their glowing Apple logo (no longer a thing unfortunately). IMO having a pelican pin would be more of the same - advertising you are a developer of some kind. An attempt to bridge the gap to a stranger who might be into the same thing. The tech changes, the desire to signal things doesn't. The usual Exceptions(tm) apply of course.
accrual··on Claude Haiku 5.5
I wonder if we'll start to see pelicans like a mascot of sorts. You could have a pelican pin on your backpack.

> "What's up with the pelican?"

Well you see in the early days of LLMs we wanted a fun way to test new models, and there was this blog, ...

accrual··on God of War on PSP, recompiled to WebAssembly and running in the browser
FWIW, the two God of War games released on PSP were considered some of the most graphically impressive on the platform. Both came out late in the console's lifetime (2008 and 2010).

An IGN review also described one of them as "it looks better than a big chunk of PS2 games". [0] I've played one of them and yes, it felt like playing a resized PS2 game.

accrual··on Claude Code’s suggested message feature: I think the real customer is the model
I like this little feature. It's just a small polish item that makes using the CC harness a little nicer.

I also like how feedback is collected. It prompts to press 1, 2, or 3 to rate how well Claude is doing, and once entered, you have 1-2 seconds to confirm if you want to send more detailed textual notes. Then it disappears, not forcing the user to stare at the question if they're uncertain or don't want to bother. That's good UX IMO. Probably gets them a bit less feedback, but also stays out of the user's way.

accrual··on Windows 11½
Many others have already replied and it is 6 days later, but I wanted to reply to say I am quite happy with the stock KDE Plasma 6 desktop. I use some themes, e.g. "Breeze AlphaBlack" gives a nice Win10-like pure black taskbar, lovely on OLED. But the rest is stock. It Just Works (tm).
accrual··on Windows 11½
Thanks for the welcome! :) It is by far my favorite desktop OS now, after decades of advocating for a strong-armed Windows approach. Use this tool, this patch, this .reg file... no more.
accrual··on Car is a smartphone on wheels. Here's who's listening
> I do like electric vehicles but its insane how absolutely terrible they are when it comes time to work on them.

Yep, they are like hermetically sealed devices like a modern consumer phone. The user can get into them and repair if they really want to and have the skills/tools... but it's nothing like the previous era of phones or vehicles.

accrual··on What a Massive New 728-Foot-Wide Crater Means for Future Moon Bases
I feel it has in the sense there is an established culture in some major Antarctic research bases. There are stories, communities, and shared history. But most of those on the ice come home after a season or two, so there's no long term settlement of individual families. Maybe this would also be true of moon bases. Researchers stay for some time, then take the next available ferry home once their season lapses. There would have to be significant infrastructure to make "ordinary" life possible over the long term - schools, hospitals, non-research jobs - reasons for staying there versus migrating back to Earth.

FWIW, there's a nice series of posts about life on the ice here: https://brr.fyi/

accrual··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
macOS Mojave remains my favorite macOS. Introduced dark mode support. It felt very polished to me. I used it heavily on a (now old) 2015 MBPr which some consider the last of the "original" MBP line. Sequoia followed it and dropped 32-bit support without adding anything I needed.
accrual··on Windows 11½
This is insanely good and mimics my personal experience of Windows these days. I literally say "pop-up! pop-up! pop-up!" out loud during a normal workday where one pop-up or prompt is rapidly replaced by another. Same app or different, doesn't matter, there's always something trying to grab attention on a Windows desktop unless you configure the hell out of it (and even that is no longer enough).

My favorite "joke" from this site:

> Scan complete: 1 threat found — ChromeSetup.exe

FWIW, I switched to Fedora in January and have no plans to look back. Only $dayjob relies on Windows anymore.

accrual··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
I haven't watched the footage yet, but if they were already at apopasis (highest point in orbit), orbital insertion would primarily raise the periapsis (lowest point) on the other side of the planet, so very little altitude change would be seen. It would be mostly an increase in velocity.
accrual··on There's a new way to break RSA that's faster than anything we've seen before
Interesting triplication in the article, I wonder how that got through editing. These are adjacent in the text:

> Privacy Pass is used by both Apple and Cloudflare, among many others.

> An attack on Privacy Pass would require an attacker to request 2^43 tokens from Cloudflare, Apple, or another organization.

> An attack on Privacy Pass would require an attacker to request tokens from Cloudflare, Apple, or another organization 2^43 times.

accrual··on Claude Opus 5.5
Anecdata ahead: I took some time to work with Opus 5.5 today. The work feels strong and comprehensive. I'm not getting the ugly "claudish" speak of Opus 5.0. Communication feels more natural and pleasant to read. Good results so far in my preliminary research.
accrual··on I'm so bad at billiards that I ended up in the hyperbolic plane [video]
This video has stunning visuals representing the math behind billiard ball path calculations. What looks chaotic and random at first glance (or even psychedelic) is presented as the visualization of pure mathematical functions.
accrual··on Ask HN: How can I browse HN in dark mode?
I set this up a while back and am struggling to find the original author. Future readers: note I did not create this theme but discovered it from a fellow HN netizen.
accrual··on Claude is a Contrarian
My view: Opus and Sonnet 5 made serious regressions in how they speak to the user. There's a constant stream of complaints about it on Reddit and other forums. The gist is Opus 5 feels like it needs to present itself as smarter than it is, pushes back on the user, and is always on a high horse. Almost like you made a mistake by asking for what you asked.

My recommendation: Use Opus 4.8. It never went away. It's still just as good for most work IMO. I've read Opus 4.6 is better for writing/creative use, but I don't use AI for that so I can't comment.

For quick one-shot type work I don't mind using Opus/Sonnet 5. They're good and fast, but even in short brief projects, I can feel the abrasiveness is waiting for me just below the surface. I prefer my agents to listen and at least pretend to care and have some warmth; to act more like a colleague than a stern bot.

accrual··on Show HN: Neobrutalism.dev – Just added Base UI support and added new color theme
Agree, this would probably be great UI for K-6 level educational apps.
accrual··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
GamersNexus released a video comparing the Frame VR vs Meta Quest 3 today, worth a watch for the Frame review alone:

accrual··on 'Fingerprints' inside the Sun could reveal if it once swallowed a planet
Not an astrophysicist, but since they mentioned the lithium is depleted, I wonder if that implies the collision of a planetary body with a sun would consume or react with the solar lithium.
accrual··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
Great work! I recommend linking to the update video as well (21 hours old at the time of this comment): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToP9xfLDSME
accrual··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
Yes, but I think it's far more sinister than that. It's not just to recoup costs by showing an ad here and there, it's to "own" an advertisement and data collection front in millions of homes across the globe where the consumer is the product. It's to build a surveillance network and to lease it out or use it themselves.

GamersNexus just released a brand new followup to LG's response and it's damning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToP9xfLDSME

accrual··on iPhone Duo
Seems that way! Small detail, but I liked that the front display can be used for taking selfies with the main camera. Opens the door for slightly nicer selfies with the self or friends, versus stuck with front camera or shooting blind.
accrual··on iPhone Duo
I wonder if the iPhone Air was something like a pilot or beta test for the Duo. Getting things as thin as possible and shipping it before attaching two of them together. FWIW I feel there's more demand for foldables (Google/Samsung/Microsoft have demonstrated some) than there is for ultra thin phones with the tradeoffs those entail.
accrual··on iPhone Duo
Time for pocket protectors to return! Geeks unite!
accrual··on iPhone Duo
Yes, I also was curious about left-handed users watching the demo, it seems very right-hand oriented at this time. Maybe there will be a toggle in Settings to switch some of the UI around, kind of like how Apple Watch asks which wrist it's wrapped around.
accrual··on AirPods 5
> Do you want open ear (AirPods) or closed (AirPods Pro).

I'm holding out for the next Pro model as I genuinely benefit from closed headphones/earbuds. Open is nice in a controlled environment but I'd rather have that slight seal when I'm somewhere noisy.

My Pro 2s are genuinely very comfortable and still work great after 2+ years of moderate use, so haven't felt a need to upgrade to Pro 3 yet. I use aftermarket foam-like tips and find they seal great FWIW.

accrual··on AirPods 5
I know it's silly but I enjoy listening for the "this is our X-est Y yet" during these events. It's incremental improvements I enjoy, but it's like a mini trope for me.
