accountface··on How Uber Used Secret “Greyball” Tool to Deceive Authorities Worldwide
They're trying to become too big to fail, but aren't quite there yet.

Essentially they're undercutting all competitors by artificially keeping fares very low and subsidizing drivers. Subsidies were the primary source of their enormous financial losses in 2016.

Once the competition is completely gone (local cabs, and Lyft in some areas), then they can stop subsidizing themselves and basically hold a monopoly. It's their entire strategy.

A single leak will often embolden others to follow suit, it's somewhat typical.
accountface··on Lyft Is Said to Seek New Funding as Its Rival Uber Stumbles
Yeah they've slashed fares and a huge part of their losses are driver subsidies. It's all a farce.
accountface··on Summary of the Amazon S3 Service Disruption
Instead of rate limiting you'd be better off making it a two-key operation once you hit X threshold. Jr admin can delete 10, but the boss needs to confirm a deletion of 100.
accountface··on Lyft Is Said to Seek New Funding as Its Rival Uber Stumbles
Uber's pricing is definitely too low. I paid $3.75 for a 20 minute ride at one point and decided to stop using it entirely because that just seems like exploitation. I'm completely willing to pay more to give workers better wages. Lyft (and other competitors) not only charge more, but drivers keep more of it.
accountface··on De-Muslimization: Flying while Muslim after the travel ban
For many it's a possibility, for Muslims it's an inevitability.
accountface··on Snap values itself at nearly $24B with its IPO pricing
Uber is Uber because of software. Take it away and you have a cab company that exploits contractors (which based on the history of cab companies is really saying something).

The last Uber I ever took was a 20 minute drive that cost me $3.75 — I had a conversation with my driver about his cut of the fare, and tipped him because I felt guilty about how absurd it had become.

Uber's recent losses are unparalleled and largely stem from driver subsidies because they aren't actually charging a sustainable fare for the service they contract.

I honestly don't think they're a real company. It's all a farce.

accountface··on Snap values itself at nearly $24B with its IPO pricing
How is Twitter being monetized? Facebook? Uber? Instagram?

Say what you will about valuations in general, but Snapchat is rare in that they've produced a physical product and set some sort of future goal in hardware (specifically cameras). So If everyone else gets a C, I'd at least give them a C+.

accountface··on Google Hangouts temporarily won’t support phone/video calls on Firefox
They also would have likely known about it for a longer period of time before it was public knowledge.
accountface··on Google launches Meet, an enterprise-friendly version of Hangouts
Especially their messaging services, they officially promote at least 3 at this point? Just pick one and work on that you jerks.

accountface··on YouTube TV
DVR functionality? Thinking this is more of a Hulu competitor with live events rather than simply an antenna... probably more of a viable alternative for local sports fans who want to ditch cable?
accountface··on Ask HN: How would you turn Twitter around?
Open up the API again and let third parties integrate live-streaming features. If you have thousands of people already watching and livetweeting a new Netflix release, facilitate that and make it easier. Imagine if everyone could watch the Superbowl while live-tweeting it in the same interface... you'd likely broaden user adoption
accountface··on Ask HN: How would you turn Twitter around?
> Aggressive censorship of alternative opinions.

I feel like you're probably including instances of harassment here, which is generally unfair.

accountface··on Show HN: Freeter is out of Beta
Took me a while to figure out what this was — seems to be a way to organize a lot of disparate pieces and shortcuts into a project dashboard?
accountface··on I wrote a program that emails me when one of my friends orders Domino's
Probably an extreme case of paranoia on my part, but Domino's should probably close this as a vulnerability, right?

If I knew someone's phone number I could potentially use this to impersonate a delivery driver to gain access to someone (at a residential address or business)...

I mean sure, I could just knock on a door or walk in impersonating someone else... but expecting a pizza delivery is different than ignoring/alerting someone to an unknown solicitor.

OR you could also potentially use it to locate someone based on phone number by following a delivery driver from the local Domino's?

You could also just use it to steal pizza. Just find the contact information of a bunch of people in a nearby condo building and wait at the door and say "Oh is that for John Doe? That's me, I'll take it"

accountface··on UK government considering a “cut-off date” for EU citizens’ rights to residency
I mean... it's a headline. The point is to read the story.

accountface··on Reddit is being manipulated by big financial services companies

accountface··on An Open Letter to the Uber Board and Investors
I do, which makes it all the more troubling. I assume these drivers didn't look at it before picking me up.
accountface··on Gmail – some users being signed out of their accounts unexpectedly
Turn on 2-stage authentication and use Last Pass or a similar password manager.

I can't really fathom how someone would have gained access to my account with those steps in place (and honestly if they did, I wouldn't even be mad because it's so impressive)... so I immediately assumed that Google was having a log-in problem.

accountface··on An Open Letter to the Uber Board and Investors
The solution to cab racism was a lie anyway, I've been kicked out of an Uber multiple times because of "I don't go to that neighborhood" (which happens to be primarily black)

accountface··on I’ll never bring my phone on an international flight again
No.

If my peers find it acceptable that I am detained indefinitely simply for not unlocking my phone, then throw away the key because all is lost.

accountface··on Warren Buffett’s Best Investment
I am so tired of the "yeah that's nice but what about X" posts on the internet. This foundation focuses on making life better for poor children and that's a worthwhile thing to focus on.

If you actually read the full text of the post you'd see that they're simultaneously reducing the infant mortality rate while increasing access to family-planning education and contraceptives... these are all things that actually tend to REDUCE population growth in developing nations.

So the one argument you came here to have isn't even true... and even if it was you're suggesting that we'd be better off if more poor children died, which is just some shitty roundabout eugenics.

Maybe spend your time advocating on environmental issues instead of shitposting about it.

accountface··on I’ll never bring my phone on an international flight again
They can detain me indefinitely if they want, I will never give my pin to border security. I'm not going to bend to this bullshit by not carrying a phone.
accountface··on Elon Musk: Humans must merge with machines or become irrelevant in AI age
>Elon Musk is a little arrogant due to his success in business and likes to make 'fun' predictions based on his very limited understanding of whatever field he happens to be talking about. He sounds like an eager undergrad student that tries to demonstrate his genius to his professors and the class. I don't understand how anyone can take him seriously in technical fields.

This is a fair assessment, but I wonder if not being constricted by cynicism is more of a pro than a con in the long run.

accountface··on The “Inside Airbnb” project has earned the home-sharing company bad press
I have all the same problems but my neighbors are college students. Gentrification is a bitch. I'd say even 1-year residents are a detriment to the community.
