account_taken··on Rethinking Backbone.js View Rendering
That was our biggest peeve with Backbone views. We fixed it by having a `renderTo` method instead of `render`. Basically, insert the $el into the DOM first, then call render.

Another benefit to this approach is it makes replacing, disposing views, creating stacked views easy ... That is when renderTo tries to insert into a container and determines a view is already in place, it can call dispose or detach on the existing view. Much simpler than Marionette regions or other view management approaches.

Exactly. We have a generic serialize() method in our models to do common toJSON. In item views, where performance is critical, the view itself transforms a subset of the models properties to JSON.
account_taken··on Linode Nextgen: The Network
Linode is pretty darn good. I have several sites with them and I have NEVER had any down time!

I also have a few sites on RamNode and BuyVM which were voted as the better low end providers. They're anything but low end. I am getting better performance SSDs, better CPUs), more resources for 1/2 the cost of a comparable Linode VPS. No problems yet, going on three months. Their control panels leave a lot to be desired compared to Linode.

account_taken··on Ask HN: Webdevs, designers: what devtools should we (Mozilla) build in Firefox?
Simplify the Firefox API's. The J2EE-like APIs in Firefox are complicated and a big turn off. Make debugging background pages easier. Make logging easier. We've built several extensions on Chrome, Firefox and IE. NOBODY volunteers to do Firefox or IE tasks. Chrome is fun.
account_taken··on Zurb Launches Foundation 4
Bootstrap styles are deeply baked in. Changing the variables file isn't enough if you want a non-bootstrappy looking site. Foundation's styles are easier to override and to get the look you want.

Bootstrap's eco system is huge. If I had to use one, it would be Bootstrap. Since I can choose either, I use Bootstrap most of the time and Foundation when I need more control.

So I don't get it. The crowd funded this project and the crowd has to pay to use it?
account_taken··on Semantics3 (YC W13) Is A Massive Consumer Products Database To Rule Them All
Yeah, exactly what I was thinking. Once Amazon and big e-tailers figure out they're being crawled for profits or to the detriment of their sales, you can bet they will restrict access and charge a fee. Seems like a good idea, and I'm sure many of us have thought of the same idea, but it's easy for any of the big guys to easily block their crawler whenever they wish. Crowdsourcing works to a certain extent but that's what deal sites are for.

I remember a real estate startup crawling listing prices from many real estate sites for maket analysis. Needless to say, that startup was shutdown quicker then you can you say "doh!"

account_taken··on Review: Textadept
I know several people that use terminal only, including myself, who use thin client devices like tablets ssh'd into a VPS.
account_taken··on Literate CoffeeScript
While the recommended practice is not to describe what the code does, I let go of that practice a while ago. Most of our projects are polyglot and our new hires don't know what a section does in an unfamiliar language. That takes time. The learning process is expedited by describing what the code does. Moreover, I tend to pseudocode the non-trivial sections in comments anyway. There's no need to throw that away.
account_taken··on Tom's Obvious, Minimal Language (like INI, only better)
Do tell about the problems with JSON for use as a configuration object? Almost every language has a library that can parse JSON.
account_taken··on Google Announces $1,299 Chromebook Pixel With 2560×1700px Touchscreen
No ssh-agent or forwarding. SSH console is usable but good 'ol terminals beats it hands down.
account_taken··on Google Announces $1,299 Chromebook Pixel With 2560×1700px Touchscreen
HA, my gay friends might buy this. It has the I'm gay rainbow sticker on it.

Other than them, I'm not seeing how this sells. A refurbished Retina MBP is cheaper. And even at full price, $200 for a superior OS that can run apps like MacVim, VirtualBox, keep my stuff local, has much more storage and sync to my private 250GB storage. That's priceless.

account_taken··on Ask HN: How do you manage your bookmarks?
I use Chrome for all bookmarks I want to share publicly at work, home and etc. For private bookmarks, I use my desktop. (And this is the main reason I moved away from Ubuntu + Unity. Someone had the bright idea of disallowing URL dragging to the desktop.)
account_taken··on Introducing Boxen
I understand the benefits of puppet, ansible, etc for provisioning on a massive scale.
account_taken··on Introducing Boxen
I'm not seeing it how installing a security patch is any different. Security patches usually check to see if they need to be applied before doing anything. Updating a version is as simple as `brew update node`, `brew updated mongodb`, etc. The bash you call hacky is what's being done here with an extra layer of Ruby.
account_taken··on Introducing Boxen
Isn't puppet overkill for this? Seems like a bunch of ruby to build command line arguments. Bash would have been easier. We have a workstation dotfiles which we clone and execute an install script with plugins for oh-my-zsh.
account_taken··on SelfCloud - Your own cloud
Try open source owncloud, I created a script on GitHub that will install the server with SSL on a fresh Debian server. I am syncing from OSX, Windows and Ubuntu. Try it in a VM

account_taken··on Linode vs. DigitalOcean – performance benchmarks
DigitalOcean is good value but I found their I/O speed not anywhere close to SSD levels. I ran this bench mark from github. RamNode is the best.

Wow and it didn't cost $70? :)
account_taken··on Hello Firefox, this is Chrome calling
Yeah, let's start calling it web 4.0 now. Truly exciting stuff.
account_taken··on Labels in input fields aren’t such a good idea
Umm it starts with a placeholder so you know if it's user name or email. If you get it wrong an error is displayed. Kind of hard to mess up a login form.
account_taken··on Labels in input fields aren’t such a good idea
Only good for simple login form of two fields. Most everyone knows that is login name and password.
account_taken··on Show HN: Authorize SSH public keys from trusted online identities
Isn't this simpler?

ssh user@host 'mkdir ~/.ssh;echo '`cat ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub`' >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys'

account_taken··on Hapi, new Node.js framework (a prologue)
nm. I didn't see the example was returning two properties. Still, that is relatively easy to do. I have a middleware that does that and it's very short not yet another framework.
account_taken··on Hapi, new Node.js framework (a prologue)
// Add the route server.addRoute({ method: 'GET', path: '/hello', config: hello });

I'm sorry but how is that different than

    app.get('/hello', require('simplemath'));
where simplemath is

    module.exports = function(req, res) { ... }
account_taken··on Are You a JavaScript Guru? Try This Test
I have been asked questions like this before in interviews and it makes me wonder if the technical interviewers were so indifferent about their jobs they would pull clever questions from the web instead of practical questions applicable to the position. I rarely answer these clever questions correctly and I've been doing JS for a while.
account_taken··on An Angled Mind – Why AngularJS is awesome
I like how he uses transitions in CSS for Angular but does it in code for jQuery to make the jQuery code look much more complicated. Why not `$('some-box').toggleClass('open')`
account_taken··on A Short Rant About Working Remotely
We ask telecommuters to work out of the office for the first two tweeks. Trying to explain the code base and the many utilities we've built is too time consuming and not easily explained over the phone or remote desktop. It's much easier to look over someone's shoulder and have discussions as needed. Moreover, we get a chance to see their personality, enthusiasm and such.
account_taken··on VMware to cut 900 jobs
I was thinking the same. Long live Redis!
account_taken··on Sublime Text 3 Beta
I'm in the same boat. I still think NERDTree, NERDCommenter, surround plugin, modelines and ability to use the same editor AND plugins in an SSH console is unbeatable combination. I can edit from my iPad with a bluetooth keyboard on my Linode VPS.

I really liked Sublime but VIM like a good pair of Levis' 501 never goes out of style.
