access_denied··on Why The American Civil War Is Important
Default setting is <America>, no qualifier needed. Also, <America> == <U.S.>, please learn to live in Ascii ;-)
access_denied··on The one about look and feel
The definition itself is new, at least for me whe I read it.

Getting to a sound definition of what design is, could be meaningful for people who will hire designers down the road. If my projects become successful I definitely want to have real conversations with the people I hired.

access_denied··on Deny This, Last.fm
I thought upvoting should be that way: one upvotes submissions one deems interesting to the HN community as a whole - not to pick sites on an argument. Did I miss something?
access_denied··on Ask YC: why doesn't Microsoft have a Windows App Store?
The appstore makes sense for Apple, because...

- quality control for end-users. Like when Nintendo started with the NES.

- cutting the middle-man out of app marketing - good for third-party developers.

Microsoft does not care for neither party. Microsofts strategy with DOS/Windows was always about tight-knit contracts with OEMs.

access_denied··on The Future Internet is rip-off/black hat based
Anti-ripp-off software is an emerging market.
access_denied··on Déformation professionnelle
Can we agree on the notion, that suffering from déformation professionelle is generally a bad thing?
access_denied··on [dead]
Yes, specially that the designer gets micro typography. The centered rating box is cheesy, though.
access_denied··on How Opera makes money
That's my experience too, except that I continue to use it. I like the fact I can configure the toolbars and the toolbar layout 100%.
access_denied··on Judge Reviewing Pirate Bay Trial Bias Is Removed for Bias
Definitely the later: people in power get screened and effectively removed, despite the fact they are biased towards powers of the establishment. Where else does it go that way?
access_denied··on Why journalists deserve low pay
Wages are expression of price for labour. What's your price?
access_denied··on Cufón, the Javascript font rendering engine
And how much dough do the font-designers see? Virtually nothing. Designing typefaces is one of the lesser paid design professions, albeit being one of the hardest if you want to do a good job. Foundries are just another one of those music-newspapers- obsolete by digital age industries.
access_denied··on The Death of Richard Dawkins: A short story by Steve Yegge
As far as I understand it (the blogpost, not the linked story), the point is: listening to the whining of others is pointless.
access_denied··on Ask HN: What apps are essential for mac?
BBedit is the best editor on the mac, by far. (ok, I am a cheapo and use emacs)
access_denied··on Why did the peoples of the New World fail to invent the wheel?
"Why did the various people..." is shorter than your comment.
access_denied··on [dead]
Did you read the second latest 43folders.com article? It's a good write-up about the whole issue.

access_denied··on Building a Django CMS for the Spokesman Review
The site-layout does not work too well in Opera.
access_denied··on What would you rather be doing?
I think many people don't "find" their passion, because they are afraid of what happends when they commit to follow through. So they find many things interesting, but deep down they are just dishonest to them selves out of fear. I want to argue that a good way to not only find your passion but to living it, is to tackle one's fears and eliminate them. Kill your inner daemons and the dream will appear.
access_denied··on What does a programmer have to barter with?
Programming visual effects. Some Websites / DVDs are sort of promotion material, which is more like a brochure and less like an "internets". But programming a showcase site for a new car or a music album is a lot of work which the sane graphic designer won't go into. But he could easily, if he had a coder ready.
access_denied··on A brief, incomplete and mostly wrong history of programming languages
BTW, "lang" == german for "long"
access_denied··on Being able to build something cool is not good enough. Neither is fast performance.
Let me add to your post. The edge cool technology can give you only counts if the markets perceive it.
access_denied··on [dead]
Bill Gates:

“Measuring programming progress by lines of code is like measuring aircraft building progress by weight“.

access_denied··on The 6502 in “The Terminator”
I am in the process to build my old Amiga up to use it as dumb terminal. Best reason I could find to have one of the golden boxes aorund (and using it).
access_denied··on Ask HN: Moving to a New City
Games. All sorts of games. Boardgames, RPGs, Sports, Theater and so on. There are always game groups searching for new members and you always have the possibility to just walk away.
access_denied··on Firefox could be the real Facebook challenger
Flock is a total success. </sarcasm>
access_denied··on Dear Mozilla community: I screwed up. Big time.
He could have restarted in his spare time.
access_denied··on Milton Glaser: Ten Things I Have Learned
What you are complaining about is not the graphic design part of the site but the web design part.
access_denied··on A challenge for hackers - C++ Robots ...
Here is the original:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crobots

access_denied··on JWZ, on Garbage Collection
Only that the amazing GC JWZ states as examples (Smalltalk, Lisp) are used in production ourdays.
access_denied··on A Selection Of Thoughts From Actual Women (regarding GoGaRuCo)
Do you that one speech from Joe Spolsky? Where he shows _one_ slide with a scarcely dressed women on it to make a point about attention? If I remember correctly he held that speech on a prior Rails Con.

I guess that was an "inspiration" for Matt, wasn't it?

access_denied··on MLB is about to make a million dollars off an iPhone app
Or "vertical" tribes like some weird anime stuff or so. Consider, MLB is mainstream.
