access_denied··on Ask HN: How many of you play music?
The standard is to do that to rise some funds for charity. I don't think you can change that into a business, becuase a band who would change from charity to profit would come of too greedy and self-important. You won't be able to sell that to the cool-kids.
access_denied··on The Economist: The World's Biggest Military Spenders by Population
It is more complicated than that. For example: bombings in Madrids. Would the Arab savages have targeted Spain if it wouldn't have been allied with the US? And what about stupid American ideas like the wars in Iraq and Afganistan? This is all included in beeing "defended". That beeing said, I aknowledge the gist of your argument: Europeans have choosen to be "defended" by the US so they shouldn't complain about the bill.

Absurd, isn't it?

access_denied··on Jokob Nielsen: Guesses vs. Data as Basis for Design Recommendations
> PS:It's "Jakob"

You mean "it's that Jakob again"? You must be designer.

Oh, I get it: you are a hacker, you mean the typo in the headline.

access_denied··on Apple rolls out new MacBooks, drops prices
Like when with the C64 no one uses the "Expansion Slot" or the Rastport or the PCMIA-Card Slots for the Amiga. The only successfull 'flap thing' was the MIDI on the Ataris.
access_denied··on Microsoft Releases Bing API - With No Usage Quotas
>> Frankly, they've always been very, very good to developers.

Except when they told everyone to develop for OS/2 - while secretly porting their Mac Apps to Windows 3.

access_denied··on Is the US Really a Nation of God-Fearing Darwin-Haters?
> Spiegel should really know better than manipulating numbers like this.

I read the magazine since I was about 8 years old (24 years ago). They used to do top-notch invetigative journalism. Over the course of my lifetime I could wittness a big decline in quality.

access_denied··on Is Linux ruining my chance at a good software engineering career?
"The dull ones, mostly."

This is what PG described as "Microsoft is dead".

access_denied··on Arrington responds to the Gillmor Gang thing
There's no bad publicity.
access_denied··on Leo Laporte loses it with Mike Arrington on the Gillmor Gang
I guess Leo is genuinely interested in technology. Arrington? I don't know off course but he doesn't seem to care.
access_denied··on Don't Click It
It made me calm, like medidation (or medication?). I guess I like it. I can imagine to have something like that for an ebook-reader style app.
access_denied··on Woobius introduces the construction industry to 21st century collaboration
I think joel_feather has 2 points: uploading via web is painful and niche pricing will be accepted by woobius target market. (This is also just an opinion, but I honestly believe those 2 points merrit some consideration).
access_denied··on Ask HN: Review my project: SitesInCommon
Yeah me too. But... the page did _explain_ the concept of the whole project very fast. Fast is essential. So it's a good concept, art-directionwise.
access_denied··on The Impending Demise of the University
You know, the original idea of a university was to research stuff in three areas that weren't covered by other institutions of society at that time: philosophy, medicine, law.

What about that?

access_denied··on Ask HN: How much do you sleep at night?
This is because researchers found out, that there are two tyes of persons regarding the "inner clock": for some the day lasts 23 hours for others 25 hours. Unless you regulate yourself with alarm-clock you will go cycles.
access_denied··on Ask HN: How much do you sleep at night?
As far as I am informed, the amount of sleep one needs varies from person to person. I am no expert but I did read some stuff about it. Also on the whole there is not done that much research about sleep.

I did test it out for myself. Without caffeine-intake my body regulates to a 7,5 hours sleep patern, no alarm-clock needed. With caffeine (2 cups of coffee + a tea) and alcohol (2 beers or so) intake I need ~10 hours sleep per night.

access_denied··on Google Wave: Why it's so good and enterprise software is so bad
"If it's one thing big companies know how to do, it's leverage this." Or it happens automatically for them: Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM.
access_denied··on Standards support in Opera 10 beta (just released)
I like the visual tabs. They were introduced by the discontinued Shiira browser and I am happy to have them back. I actually had a todo on my list to file a request, now I am happy. Thanks!
access_denied··on Typing The Letters A-E-S Into Your Code? You’re Doing It Wrong
"Perhaps, especially for crypto dilettantes." Yes, that's what I thought in the middle of it: he wrote it to educate his clients in an entertaining way to not have to explain this tricky thing for a millionths time. Good read, BTW.
access_denied··on Ask HN: I could really use some business advice.
Do you know the coaching program from Rich Sheffren an Jay Abraham? Maybe this is a product you want to buy now.
access_denied··on Oracle's Ellison considers netbook market foray
And once all those corporate dudes have those JBooks around all the time, you have a market for consumer apps. Like when PC gaming established itself.
access_denied··on Johnny Lee (of wiimote hack fame) was involved in Natal
But is "true ubiquitous computing" equal to "the next generation of input technology"?
access_denied··on Google PowerMeter
Google grabs for data to improve results for their AI . The more data, the better AI works; exponentianally more so than when improving algorythm.
access_denied··on Given the odds, is taking venture capital the best way to get rich?
The best way to get rich is selling insurances. There is good money to be made with what is basically shovelling papers and.. ... doing well in marketing / sales. And that's the kicker. Because the good sales people have much better jobs, which are interresting to the sales geek. But if you are the only smart guy in your region, you can pull it off quite easily. Off course it is boring work, that's the downside. And the real reason for taking up venture capital: to get your world changing idea funded (realized).

access_denied··on You are the problem: the reason why so many startups don't get venture funding
Just to make something clear here: the VCs are not the ones with the special stuff. The special stuff is the next Apple II, Tesla car or what have you.

Get real: how many people are there that wouldn't be "the problem" by these "measures"?

access_denied··on How Perl 6 just sells itself (excerpt from IRC)
Thanks for the pointer!
access_denied··on How Perl 6 just sells itself (excerpt from IRC)
All in all I agree with you, but I think momentum can be part of objective criteria. Not in the language itself, but as part of a human ressources or marketing strategy. Also, sometimes the language with momentum is the one with the library. Case in point: Cocoa bridge under Leopard exists for Python, Ruby and .. not for Perl.
access_denied··on Ask HN: Outdoor jobs for geeks?
I think the original hack is maybe the spearhead of the hunter; pitty, those guys were so much like the jocks we detested at high school.
access_denied··on "If you move your mouse pointer continuously... the query may not fail."
I find interesting, here we see the structure in RAM becoming almost as complex as the physical world (Or at least very dam complex.). This starts to make the heap react in way similiar to those in the physical world. We get a "mechanic" solution to a digital problem.
