The maximize on Mac OS X works, then concept is different from Windows. Maximize does not necessarily mean "fill the whole screen with one window" under OS X, but that doesn't mean it is broken. Play around with Preview to get it.
If all these hardware makers had invested just a little bit in desktop Linux over the past few years, they would be free from the Microsoft stranglehold by now. Why do they need daddy Google to come by an whip their backs?
Indeed, I think he hates them because he sees his old-school world (and thereby his job-security) challenged by this, as he calls it, freetard-thing, which seems to be a blob in his mind consisting of elements from: blogs, linux, oss, free, internet, sandals, open, free. I think this is so, because when he gave a talk about his blog he stated that i got into blogging out of fear that Linux would kill old-school journalism.
He is also good in weaving in trivia. Example from the Yahoo-merger story:
"But what, exactly, is the big vision here? I guess they'll talk about how phase one was the PC revolution and now we're entering phase two which is Internet computing and the cloud and they'll say that by joining together they'll become this giant powerful megacloud provider and the battle for utility computing is going to be all about scale."
Years ago Steve Jobs presented the digital-hub strategy for the Mac. He talked about the internet being the second phase of the PC and the digital-hub the third phase. So the above cited paragraph is mockery of the finest order. The better pieces of Fake-Steve are full of this stuff.
My above comment "I enjoyed your narrative." is meant in a sinceren and non-cynical, non-subtext-whatsoever, non-ironic way. I wrote it to express a bit of appreciation towards Micand for crafting his imho good summary on the topic.
Can anyone explain to me, what is worth downvoting about it? Thanks.
The original idea of university wasn't some form of training camp for a profession, it was the idea of coming together to do scientific research on a given topic. I think it would stand them quite well to get back to the roots.
I think the helpful way of looking at lectures is to see them as a medium amongst many. When is a lecture / presentation the right choice to get the point across?
What if I come into a situation where I have to choose between 'going with the flow' or staying a decent person, and I know if I stay up for the good they will kill me or worse torture me? Will I be strong enough? And if yes: what a life.
These days you can easily get picked by the CIA for some stupid reason. Actually I am a bit uneasy about US-customs for that reason.
Don't know if this counts, but my family immigrated during WW2 from Prussia (Soviet tanks rolling in..) to western Germany. Like Americans we had to build everything from scratch in town were everybody else was a stranger.
Mac OS X has tagging implemented in a nice way. I use it all the time. Compatible with the directory hierarchy. Some refer to it as a hack in the bad sense of the word, but IMHO it isn't.
Yes it is on purpose. The idea is to think about the more general theme of editing modes, not the discussion about the iPhone the article narrows the topic to.
I don't own any MJ music, but I like at least 5 songs enough to buy them. (Only reason I didn't is lazyness in getting around to clean up my music collection and having it all on my computer etc.)
If quasimodes are a hindrance to usability, than Emacs is full of these, but I never thought of them that way. Maybe it is different on the desktop an Vi is the perfect editor for the iPhone?
What I meant is the following: Contrary to what you wrote, there is opinion in business. There are strategic decisions to be made, which are affected by political and cultural goals. And these are off course opinions. As an example I wanted to have cited Apple against Microsoft. A culture that values making money with the right product over making money with as much products as possible.
Updating software packs, determining if source is reliable, studying source code and debugging are not done very often by office workers in fields like biz admin or design, to say the least.
Interesting. Could this central arbiter be a set of rules an principles, an algorythm? That would be a very complicated program, why not take a human mind? It's faster.
