accelbred··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
Agreed. Using Gnome at work for a few weeks convinced me to ditch my custom twm setup and move all my personal machines to Gnome as well. It is different, but once giving it time and a honest try I found its a far better experience than any other desktop environment I've worked with.
accelbred··on Breaking decompilers with single-function, and no-main() C codebases
What about function pointers?
accelbred··on Defer: Resource cleanup in C with GCCs magic
This is still useful for cleaning up file descriptors, unlocking mutexes, etc.
accelbred··on Bcachefs removed from the mainline kernel
AFAIK, Facebook uses BTRFS on their servers.
accelbred··on Show HN: Zedis – A Redis clone I'm writing in Zig
I used Zig for my projects for a while, but moved back to C for similar reasons. C23, with gcc extensions, and using MISRA-like coding style where it makes sense, provides a similar experience to Zig but with seamless C interop. You dont have comptime, but my biggest lesson from my time in Zig is that I usually want to pass a vtable instead of monomophizing over input types.
accelbred··on BCacheFS is being disabled in the openSUSE kernels 6.17+
I switched to ZFS for a while but had to switch back because of how much was broken. Overlayfs had issues, reflinks didn't work, etc. Linux-specific stuff that just works on kernel filesystems was missing or buggy. I saw later they added support for some of the missing features but they had data corruption issues. Also I doubt it'll ever support fs-verity.

I don't plan on giving ZFS or other filesystems not designed for Linux another go.

accelbred··on Formatting code should be unnecessary
What if the common intermediate encoding is text, not binary? Then grep/diff/sed all still work.

If we had a formatting tool that operated solely on AST, checked in code could be in a canonical form for a given AST. Editors could then parse the AST and display the source with a different formatting of the users choice, and convert to canonical form when writing the file to disk.

accelbred··on Bear is now source-available
This isn't bear, the compilation database building cli tool, for those similarly confused.
accelbred··on Glow-in-the-dark succulents are here
I would buy this.
accelbred··on QEMU 10.1.0
How does nested KVM work? Are all the page tables handled by the top level? Do the traps have to propagate up?
accelbred··on Object-oriented design patterns in C and kernel development
I usually put an inline wrapper around vtable functions so that `thing->vtable->foo(thing, ...)` becomes `foo(thing, ...)`.
accelbred··on Anker is no longer selling 3D Printers
I wouldn't buy cables from them. Their 100W cables dont work even with their own 100W chargers. Bought multiple at different times, since I'd been using them with 60W chargers before. All of them had the same issue with dropping out with 100W chargers from Anker or other brands. I ended up throwing them all out and getting 100W cables from another brand, and those have been quite reliable.
accelbred··on The .a file is a relic: Why static archives were a bad idea all along
PIC code would work where PIE does, but likely perform worse. In shared libraries, calls to any non-static function can't be assumed to be the same function at runtime, since another library linked or using LD_PRELOAD may also define the symbol. Thus all calls to non-static functions must go through the shared library lookup machinery. This prevents inlining opportunites as well. Functions in an executable can't be overwridden in this manner, and override the symbols in shared libraries. Thus PIE code can have cheaper function calls and freely inline functions.

Its not that you couldn't use the PIC code, but it would be better to just recompile with PIE.

accelbred··on The .a file is a relic: Why static archives were a bad idea all along
PIE code is different than PIC. PIE can assume no interposition.
accelbred··on I watched Gemini CLI hallucinate and delete my files
This post feels uncomfortably a lot like Claude generated text.
accelbred··on The .a file is a relic: Why static archives were a bad idea all along
so files require PIC code, which brings along symbol interpolation.
accelbred··on Font Comparison: Atkinson Hyperlegible Mono vs. JetBrains Mono and Fira Code
Emacs should also be doing kerning. I use proportional fonts for non-prog-mode buffers and no issue here.
accelbred··on Jujutsu for busy devs
Is there a magit equivalent? I heavily use magit's interactive features and extensions to the git UI (like spinoff, absorb, or the auto-backup thing)
accelbred··on How to handle people dismissing io_uring as insecure? (2024)
Yup, but that leads to io-uring devs complaining that people dislike software using io-uring because it doesn't run in containers/etc blocking io-uring entirely
accelbred··on Where's Firefox going next?
If firefox implemented WebSerial and WebUsb, I'd lose a lot of trust in it. I say this as an embedded developer.
accelbred··on KiCad and Wayland Support
I don't miss the X11 days where I had to patch restoring window positions out of every application that did so. Good riddance.

Just that last time I had the application on a side monitor doesn't mean it should move itself after launching. Its especially bad if you often reconfigure monitor layout (for example laptop sometimes using external monitors).

accelbred··on Anker is recalling over 1.1M power banks due to fire and burn risks
I've bought cables from them that dont work with their own chargers. Bought multiple of each so was not a one-off. Their 100W cables fail when used with chargers that can do 100W.
accelbred··on Introducing stronger dependencies on systemd
This seems like it might impact systemd musl systems too, due to the NSS and getpwent requirement, right?
accelbred··on Denuvo Analysis
MH World didn't have Denuvo on release, but it was added with the expansion. It was thus easy to tell.
accelbred··on Show HN: The C3 programming language (C alternative language)
Does it allow you to make functions weak? Can you do something like gcc's constructor attribute?
accelbred··on Most promoted and blocked domains on Kagi
At the airport, on the way to a Linux conference, I wore the Kagi shirt and people initiated conversations due to it.
accelbred··on When you deleted /lib on Linux while still connected via SSH (2022)
I personally only snapshot Documents, Pictures, my git repo dir, etc.

Stuff like .cache and podman stuff stays unsnapshotted.

I just recommend to others to snapshot home since most people don't want to bother categorizing their data.

accelbred··on When you deleted /lib on Linux while still connected via SSH (2022)
On a CoW filesystem like btrfs/bcachefs/zfs, a snapshot only has the overhead of the delta, so are cheap.

Btrbk can also take disk space into account for garbage collecting snapshots? Not sure.

accelbred··on When you deleted /lib on Linux while still connected via SSH (2022)
Nah, recycle bin is the wrong model. Automatic filesystem snapshoting is the way to go. Snapshots are cheap and let you recover full state from your history.

Just use btrfs, and set up btrbk to snapshot your home directory every 5 minutes, and have its gc keep every snapshot from past few hours, an hourly snapshot for past few days, and weekly for past few months.

accelbred··on Carefully but Purposefully Oxidising Ubuntu
I don't buy that uutils will be a meaningful improvement for security. Though replacing GPL licensed coreutils with a MIT licensed alternative is not a good look for Ubuntu's support of free software.
