abuzzooz··on AltStore – An alternative app store for non-jailbroken iOS devices
I never understood this argument. Many products in the past have failed because they were too restrictive. Apple’s current suite of products are doing very well, so they must be doing right.

If you don’t like Apple’s approach or products, then don’t buy them and let the market decide. No company is under obligation to do business according to what you or I think is correct.

If you think the market for a good phone with open hardware is there, then by all means go ahead and build such a product. There is plenty of VC money these days.

Then tell your customers that your product won’t be supported on their shiny Apple hardware and ask them to buy another hardware from a different manufacturer.
abuzzooz··on Introducing Sketch: A Playground for React Native from Expo (YC S16)
Sorry, I should have clarified.

I'm not against using QR codes. I just didn't realize that I could close the modal window, and thought that I had to jump through hoops to try out Sketch.

Given the amount of crap that can be found on the internet, I have a very low threshold for losing interest.

A better approach would have been to remind me later than I can scan a QR code to access the page on my mobile device.

abuzzooz··on Introducing Sketch: A Playground for React Native from Expo (YC S16)
I actually lost interest and closed the tab when I saw the QR code.

Nice!

A few years ago, there was an HN post about a similar algorithm: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4912964

Inspired by this, I wrote my own implementation in Perl: http://qumsieh.github.io/blog/2012/12/14/Evolutionary-Image-...

Pretty cool effect.

abuzzooz··on “Swift will be open source later this year”
They said it will happen by the end of 2015.
abuzzooz··on Ask HN: I want to write a simple webapp, how should I start?
Not being a web developer, I don't see any mention of Node, which makes me curious. Is Node not a good option?
abuzzooz··on Show HN: Rudolph Runner
Brings back old memories of Moon Patrol. Thanks!
abuzzooz··on AndroWish: Tcl/Tk on Android
> It is old Sun technology that Sun abandoned to work only on Java

Not exactly true. Tcl/Tk was not invented at Sun, although Sun did fund its development for a few years by employing its author John Ousterhout.

But, I agree with you that the UI look is outdated, and needs some touching up. Every time this issue is brought up, the Tcl folks point to the "new" theming capabilities that were added in v8.5 (or perhaps v8.4?). I haven't looked at theming in Tcl to make an opinion.

abuzzooz··on What Does an Idle CPU Do?
I believe that these days unused CPU cores are physically shut down by turning off the voltage supply that's feeding them, in order to save power. This is a commonly used technique in chip design called "power gating". It is one of the most important techniques for prolonging battery life in mobile devices.

Would be nice to have a demo site set up.

You can.

abuzzooz··on New scientific markup language
probably because the page was cross-linking to images on another host, and the admin of that host switched the images.

edit: this is called "goatse" btw. Don't google it.

abuzzooz··on World Cup results for hackers
Great job. I have my own mongodb of the games/scores that I update manually (not in real time though).

I would love to see something automated like this for the major leagues (La Liga, BPL, Bundesliga, Serie A). I tried my hand at scraping the HTML of different sites, but found out that the main ones guard against that by changing their HTML periodically, so I gave up.

Side question: what does HN think in general about scraping data from HTML? There are websites that charge for live sports data, and scraping them seems borderline unethical.

abuzzooz··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Pinegrow looks awesome. May I ask about what library you used to write it on the Mac? Do you have an embedded HTML renderer, or did you write your own?
abuzzooz··on Mathematicians Team Up on Twin Primes Conjecture
> It would seem to me that once you reach a certain threshold you won't be able to find two primes "close" to each other anymore because primes will be so far apart from each other. ]

That is not quite correct. The average gap between primes gets larger as you move further along the number line. But, you will still get the occasional consecutive odd numbers that are close to one another. In fact, there is an old conjecture (Twin Prime Conjecture[1]) that claims that there are an infinite number of pairs of consecutive primes separated by 2.

PS. I'm not a mathematician (engineer with some decent math background), so I might very well be wrong.

abuzzooz··on Microsoft’s Hardware, Round 2: Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2
Microsoft sticking to Tegra is an interesting choice. I'm not saying it's bad, but still interesting given the current dynamics of the mobile market.

Now that they have Nokia, I predict that Microsoft will attempt to acquire NVIDIA in order to mimic Apple's and Samsung's vertical strategies. Not sure Jen-Hsun or the board would agree though.

abuzzooz··on NVidia will license their GPU cores to other hardware manufacturers
The way I see it, this will directly cannibalize Tegra sales. Up to and including Tegra 4, NVIDIA's mobile GPUs weren't based on their desktop GPU technology. Starting with the next-gen Tegras, they will have a Kepler-based (and later a Maxwell-based) GPU in their mobile SoCs, architected from scratch to be power-efficient. That will be a big deal. Imagine running CUDA apps in the palm of your hand.

But with this step, it seems to me that Tegra will not have any differentiator any more (unless NVIDIA keeps some features to itself). Could NVIDIA be adopting ARM's strategy?

abuzzooz··on NVidia will license their GPU cores to other hardware manufacturers
To be fair, NVIDIA tried to sell a couple of products directly to end consumers before. For example they sold a dual tv tuner card a few years ago (http://www.nvidia.com/page/dualtvmce.html), but it didn't go too well and was discontinued. These were always half-hearted attempts at testing the waters. NVIDIA never really put too much effort into it.

abuzzooz··on Permanent - the new spreadsheet for iPad
GRID looks very nice. And they do a good job showing off its capabilities in the videos.

The only problem is that I couldn't find a link to buy it from. Is it available yet?

abuzzooz··on Features Unique to Opera Browser
> Mouse gestures: > Firefox has that (with an extension), I tried it but never liked it. I tend to play with my mouse all the time, and triggered gestures by mistake

Opera's built-in mouse gestures are infinitely superior to the FF extension, and are actually very useful. Tabs and mouse gestures were the reasons I went with Opera a long time ago. They also had some useful keyboard shortcuts that were pretty handy ('z' to go back in history, 'x' to go forward, etc) which made it perfect for quick surfing since my right hand manipulated the mouse, while my left hand was naturally positioned over these keys.

Unfortunately, there came a time when Opera suffered some intermittent and annoying crashes. I switched to FF, but it was much slower and the gestures were horrible. Finally, when Chrome came into the scene, I switched to it and never looked back.

Also, since my switch to a Macbook Pro, I can use the double-finger swipes for backward/forward navigation, which are really the only useful gestures for me.

abuzzooz··on Mona Lisa in 50 polygons, using a genetic algorithm (2008)
Not to be outdone, I wrote my own genetic algorithm in Perl to do the same. It starts from randomly generated triangles, and evolves them to match the given image.

Here is the result of my first trial after 5000 generations:

http://imgur.com/L9Odx

For this run, I used 50 triangles, each at 50% alpha (fixed), a GA population size of 200, a crossover rate of 0.91 and a mutation rate of 0.01. It took around 12 hours to run, but that's mainly because I opted to do it in Perl and didn't spend any time optimizing it.

abuzzooz··on A breakdown of how I was talked out of $100
I was once in a mall, around noonish, when all of a sudden I saw a group of those Israeli sellers quickly close their two carts and run outside. Turns out that ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents were in the mall looking for them.

A couple of hours later, they came back and resumed working as if nothing happened.

abuzzooz··on E17 (Enlightenment) enters alpha after 12 years
At one point, my favorite desktop by far. As it happens, a few weeks ago I decided to take E16 for a spin after many many years of neglect. It still felt great and snappy. I'll be trying this latest alpha for sure.

abuzzooz··on Thinking This iPad Mini Thing Even Througher
> You might need more thumb-rest room on the sides than you do on the iPhone, but not nearly as much as you do on the full-size iPad.

Why? The iPhone is meant to be held in one hand and manipulated by the other. The iPad has a different use model and hence a slightly different design. How would the use model of the iPad mini be different?
