absurddoctor··on The hidden engineering of runways
There will be lift almost as soon as the plane begins moving forward, reducing the weight of the plane, which would seem to reduce downward stress.
absurddoctor··on The hidden engineering of runways
I think that depends on the region and weather differences. In the northeast at least, asphalt seems to be a lot more common than concrete.
absurddoctor··on A closer look at a BGP anomaly in Venezuela
On the one hand, the Cloudflare article doesn’t smell bad to me. As someone who gets to pay attention to this type of thing, these kinds of things really do happen frequently, and mistakes are the most common cause.

If the US government had enough access to try to intentionally do this, they had enough access to snoop on traffic with methods that would not be visible to the outside world, and they would work more reliably than these BGP shenanigans. So I’d suggest you are right about the lack of trust, even if this particular event is probably not supporting evidence. I’d also agree with other posters that any such trust was misplaced in the first place.

absurddoctor··on Grief gets an expiration date, just like us
The pilot restrictions definitely need a revamp. Any diagnosis or medication can greatly restrict you for a long time after, incentivizing avoiding treatment completely.
absurddoctor··on EPA Seeks to Eliminate Critical PFAS Drinking Water Protections
I wonder if you misunderstood what the commenter was saying. It isn’t that the goal of the companies is to make people sick as you suggest, it’s that the goal of the companies is to increase profits, and they don’t want concerns over people’s health to be a constraint on that goal.
absurddoctor··on Jules, our asynchronous coding agent
But unlike some other pieces of the Ultra subscription you can’t share YouTube premium with family. So now I have both and Google has suggested a few times that I shouldn’t be doing that.
absurddoctor··on OpenAI’s Windsurf deal is off, and Windsurf’s CEO is going to Google
They quietly released an update to CC earlier today so it can now be run natively on Windows.
absurddoctor··on How to hire low experience, high potential people
I failed that as well back then! I still (mostly) remember the question that I knew was going to sink me. The scenario was that I caught a coworker stealing a pencil from the company, and the question was what I would do about it. I stubbornly chose whatever the ‘do nothing’ option was, and continued my time as a line cook for several more years. I probably dodged a bullet there.
absurddoctor··on PyPI Was Subpoenaed
Having been on the receiving end a bit, the gag orders don't come from the FBI directly. The FBI can ask you not to say anything, but you can ignore that without any legal repercussions. Any gag order that matters is issued by a judge.

absurddoctor··on A Maine community comes together to save a candlepin bowling tradition
I think this may have surfaced on reddit recently, with a picture. https://www.reddit.com/r/nostalgia/comments/10pciup/the_comp...
absurddoctor··on From Google to Twitter
A more generous reading is that he was saying he didn’t plan on quitting and didn’t plan on changing his behavior to fit into any culture changes that he might disagree with. The mentioned privilege is that he could afford to be fired if that was the result, not that he was protected from being fired.
absurddoctor··on Lua, a Misunderstood Language (2021)
The game itself is Java, but the mods are Lua
absurddoctor··on An experience like no other (2015)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/882140/Reentry__An_Orbita... is pretty interesting for summing early US space flight.
absurddoctor··on How Graphviz thinks the USA is laid out (2021)
Given the author, higher order jokes seem especially appropriate.
absurddoctor··on EverQuest players break sacred MMO code by waking up 20-year-old dragon
That’s a fun story! Asherons Call had something along those lines, https://massivelyop.com/2018/01/30/re-examining-the-signific... though it only really got interesting on one server. Sadly getting a repeat on todays emulators seems unlikely to be possible.
absurddoctor··on The effect of flossing on the oral microbiome, gum disease, and bad breath
My memory of that wasn’t that dentists stopped recommending flossing, it was just an acknowledgment that there hadn’t been any research that showed a positive effect. And not that the research had failed, there just hadn’t been any at all. I think most dentists continued to recommend flossing.
absurddoctor··on Mourning loss as a remote team
There might be merit to this in general. But in this specific case the person is no longer in authority so it doesn’t seem to apply.
absurddoctor··on U.S. firm Cogent cutting internet service to Russia
Sure, but for most of the service cutoffs so far, including this one, there were no relevant US sanctions in place.
absurddoctor··on I have no capslock and I must scream
I found it pretty useful to do both. A quick press is esc while holding it down is ctrl. I do find caps lock useful enough to keep it around still, so hitting left shift + right shift toggles that.
absurddoctor··on There’s No Such Thing as Clean Code
I’ve no experience with anonymous reviews, but have had experience with two approaches that help with the minor comments. One is an agreed upon method of identifying potentially minor comments. We call them ‘nits’, with the understanding that they can be dismissed by the code submitter without any changes. The second is the opposite of anonymous reviews where we meet up and have a ‘live’ review. This makes going over any such bits pretty quick and painless, as it avoids the back and forth that text comments sometimes result in. It has the added benefit of being able to discuss the ‘why’ of things more easily, which is especially useful if the reviewer is less familiar with the code involved.
absurddoctor··on FDA authorizes first antiviral pill for Covid, Paxlovid
Isn’t it still the case that a large percentage of hospitalizations are people who refused to get vaccinated? Is there any reason to believe these same folks would willingly take this?
absurddoctor··on Schedules, Goals, and Dreams (2013)
Did someone confuse the date value for the year value?
absurddoctor··on Ask HN: Which software do you guys use for managing devices in rack
I no longer work in data centers, but in the past had success with both https://opendcim.org/ and https://www.racktables.org/. RackTables is probably a little simpler for managing just a few cabinets worth of things.
