abrowne··on KDE vs. Gnome Design Philosophies (2017)
(2017)
abrowne··on What Philip Glass and J. S. Bach have in common (2018)
Yeah, I was thinking of that film as well as Elena by Andrey Zvyagintsev.

abrowne··on What Philip Glass and J. S. Bach have in common (2018)
This mean Glass makes a great movie soundtrack!
abrowne··on Closing web browser windows doesn't close connections
Do you have chrome://settings/system Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed enabled? I see this pref on Linux and Windows, but not Mac. I believe it's enabled by default…
abrowne··on Georgian African American newspapers from 1886-1926 now available freely online
Agreed, as an midwestern American. Hearing "Georgian", I would think of the country, then the Georgian era (especially regarding architecture) and only then the state.
abrowne··on “When the entire household goes to bed, I do curl development for 2 more hours.”
Real « French style » puts spaces inside (they should be thin spaces).
abrowne··on HN was down
The "View page source" pages too.
abrowne··on SUSE targets pre-summer IPO
They used to use their own Ubuntu variant for desktops, but switched to their own Debian variant.

And ChromeOS is based on Gentoo IIRC.

abrowne··on A lost tourist who thought Maine was San Francisco
Or St Petersburg, Florida.

And on the way back, not to Minneapolis, KS!

abrowne··on MIPS Becomes RISC-V
They're even changing the name of the company to MIPS, just like RIM → Blackberry (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26389870

One big difference is most consumers, and I think even many companies using the chips, don't really care what architecture they are using, unlike with an end-user OS/"ecosystem". So if they can use their abilities and experience from MIPS to make RISC-V chips with good price to performance, they could do OK.

abrowne··on MIPS Becomes RISC-V
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em?
abrowne··on The Framework Laptop
Please support the Linux Vendor Firmware Service https://fwupd.org/ :-)
abrowne··on Why Tech Moguls Are Obsessed with Building Utopian Cities
Not a new obsession:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fordlândia

Also, some have recently argued that people had to be forced to live in those first cities:

abrowne··on M1 Macs have another hidden boot mode
It would still need to download the firmware image on the computer running AC2 if it hadn't been downloaded before of course.
abrowne··on WebKit Quirks
And icloud.com: https://github.com/WebKit/WebKit/blob/21c441ed8ddc83f3e24ad5...
abrowne··on Google is now a Visionary Sponsor of the Python Software Foundation
Does Google even use Python 3? I thought they were moving things from Python 2 to Go. (And Chromium build and debug scripts still use Python 2 AFAIK.)
abrowne··on External boot disks still don’t work properly with M1 Macs
I agree with that! But I'm not a developer. I'm doing hardware repairs, and this machine is to read ticket notes and enter repair info and send emails (and play my music :-).
abrowne··on External boot disks still don’t work properly with M1 Macs
M1 Macs don't have Internet Recovery. You need to use another Mac with Apple Configurator 2 to restore the firmware using DFU mode, which unlike with T2 Intel Macs, includes the whole OS.
abrowne··on External boot disks still don’t work properly with M1 Macs
It's not that bad … for what I'm doing, and I can do something else when the computer stalls. I've thought about an external TBT SSD, but doesn't seem worth it yet.
abrowne··on External boot disks still don’t work properly with M1 Macs
Tell that to my work iMac with a HDD (not my choice) and a new enough OS to require APFS. The only programs I typically have open are Chrome and a music player, and it freezes randomly, and Chrome is constantly waiting on cache.
abrowne··on Barcode scanner app on Google Play infects 10M users with one update
The second one too:

abrowne··on The Feminine Physique: On Women's Bodybuilding
The design of The Believer physical magazine is not exactly purely functional either.
abrowne··on San Francisco's school board in name only
Search Google with "cache:$YOUR_URL_HERE".
abrowne··on Show HN: A usable eBook reader inside a browser (azw3, mobi, ePub, pdf)
I like it! It needs more display options, like line-height, and margin size. I also accidentally scrolled with my touchpad and was moved to the very beginning, then very end when I reversed course (Chromium on Linux FWIW).
abrowne··on OpenBSD on the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano
At least to you maybe, but I only use Bluetooth on my laptop for playing music to a speaker, which could I could replace with a long cable if I really wanted to (or some other kind of network player). On my phone, I first intentionally enabled bluetooth recently for my state's Covid tracing app.
abrowne··on Qutebrowser 2.0
An ostrich and a woodpecker are similar in a lot of ways, both birds descending from a common ancestor. But I don't think you'd confuse them.
abrowne··on Google has turned off access to sync features for Chromium
Looks good but I hope this part is optional:

> xBrowserSync does not only sync but also enhances your productivity by enriching your native browser bookmarks with the addition of descriptions and tags, and an intuitive search interface enables you to find, modify and share bookmarks quickly and easily. xBrowserSync even adds descriptions and tags to new bookmarks for you automatically.

abrowne··on Google has turned off access to sync features for Chromium
I won't miss sync (I don't use it), but I'll miss the Google Translate feature.
abrowne··on Limiting Private API Availability in Chromium
Too bad (I use Ubuntu's Chromium): I don't use sync, but I'll miss the Google Translate feature in Chromium.
abrowne··on Limiting Private API Availability in Chromium
Anyone know if by "third-party Chromium based browsers" they mean sonething like Ubuntu's Chromium package or something like Brave or Vivaldi?
