iBooks is now Books too.
abrowne··on Why geothermal isn't ubiquitous and how it might get that way
True, although I think that's hydropower? At least that's what I remember from when I studied there ~15 years ago.
abrowne··on Why geothermal isn't ubiquitous and how it might get that way
Keep in mind Iceland's population is under 400k. That's less than the city proper of Minneapolis, for example.
abrowne··on Tell HN: Google issue tracker does not allow viewing issues unless signed-in
The listed link goes to a Android bug on the "Android Public Tracker".

"Mother Earth Mother Board" (1996) by Neal Stephenson is great narrative nonfiction on the subject: https://www.wired.com/1996/12/ffglass/
abrowne··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
At least in Minneapolis, everyone who's buying a remotely desirable family house is paying a lot above the asking price, although what I've seem is more like 10–15%.

> Mild disappointment at how the demo page has been minified info a single gigantic line so there's no easy way to View Source and see how certain things are done.

Have you tried the Inspector, rather than View Source? That (re)formats the code.

abrowne··on Using a magnetic string to fish for a lost iPhone 12 in a Berlin canal
At least in jurisdictions that have abolished capital punishment.
abrowne··on Complexities of e-mail validation logic
If you are consistent. A couple times I've successfully signed up for something with a username+string@gmail.com address but then have been unable to unsubscribe because my address is "invalid".

abrowne··on Framework Laptop pre-orders are open, starting at $999
> Why does the Enter key look so strange?

It looks like a design some other laptops use, with the top enclosure cut to fit both ANSI (horizontal) and ISO (vertical) enter keys, so there's no silver metal case between the enter key and the one next to it, just dark plastic from the keyboard.

abrowne··on Samsung to jump into laptop processor market with Exynos chip in H2
Huawei as well, at least in China, and with a Linux OS:

> Huawei launches a Linux laptop with an ARM-based Kirin 990 processor

> Now Huawei has launched its first laptop that doesn’t feature an Intel or AMD chip. The Huawei Qingyun L410 is powered by Huwaei’s own Kirin 990 processor, an ARM-based chip that was initially developed for smartphones and tablets.

abrowne··on Use Alacritty instead of Termite
Same. I'm slowly switching from GNOME to Sway, but I'm not going 100% until Chromium's Wayland support is better, since I spend 98% of my time in Chromium or VS Code. The good news is they are actively working on it since ChromeOS will (does?) use Wayland so they can split the Chromium browser from the Chromium that runs the OS shell.
abrowne··on Rufus: Reliable USB Formatting Utility
The Debian manual agrees to use `cp` and then to run `sync` to make sure all data is really written to the disk. I've been doing this for a year or two now with no issues, even from a Mac.
abrowne··on Use Alacritty instead of Termite
It's Wayland-only, right? Alacritty OTOH not only works on X11, but is cross-platform.
abrowne··on Why are there so many Canadians in India?
en-CA uses US paper sizes AFAIK. Which is why I use it, as an American, for the same reasons you state — plus $ as the currency — and without changing paper sizes should I ever print something.
abrowne··on Ubuntu 21.04
The snap is also from Mozilla.
abrowne··on Proposed acquisition of ARM Limited by NVIDIA: public interest intervention
Interesting that they mention a lot of prices with a dollar sign without specifying the currency or converting any of the amounts to GBP.

abrowne··on How Finland rebranded itself as a literary country (2018)
It's an essay published in the "Arts & Culture" section of a literary review. It's not "hard news". It's not supposed to be neutral.

abrowne··on Why keyboard shortcuts don't work on non-US layouts and how devs could fix it
ASCII has a limited number of characters, so they designed it so some do double-duty. The grave could be a grace accent if you backspaced over a letter, or it could be an opening quote mark. The apostrophe was the reverse: it could be the acute accent. The fonts were drawn so these characters were angled enough to be accents, but also looked like quote marks. The apostrophe wasn't a vertical prime sign. Angle brackets and greater/lesser-than also double-up.
abrowne··on Cycling is more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities
Depends on the city? Minneapolis-St. Paul has ok cycling infrastructure for North America that certainly could be improved, but I don't see a negative attitude
abrowne··on Windows 95 – How Does It Look Today?
I remember our family's Mac, with a 68LC040 CPU, which was a 68040 without a dedicated floating point unit, could only play back mp2 files in realtime.
