abrahamsen··on 15 GB now shared between Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos
People seem to forget about the network effect when discussing DropBox.

The main reason I continue to use DropBox over cheaper alternatives, is that most of my collaborators in other companies have DropBox, and we use shared folders to exchange files. DropBox was the first solution simple enough to make them switch from using mail attachments.

They have an internal Linux client.

Which makes me unsure we will ever see one released externally, it must be the support cost that holds them back. Internally, they only have to support one distribution (their own) and some very smart users.

abrahamsen··on 15 GB now shared between Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos
At least they kept their old plans for existing customers. Of course, upgrading means no more cheap storage.
abrahamsen··on 15 GB now shared between Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos
They already raised the price for storage. But at least they kept the old plans for existing customers. I pay $5 per year for 20 GiB.

>I care that much, though, since there's no Drive client for linux (how hard can it be to port the thing?).

Not hard, it has been available forever internally in Google. I guess the hard part is supporting it externally.

abrahamsen··on Where and When Did the Symbols "+" and "–" Originate?
Kind of weird that no consensus have emerged for multiplication (·, ×, *, or horizontal juxtaposition) or division (÷, /, or vertical juxtaposition with horizontal line between) yet.

As you noted, we still have factor 1000 steps. -ard is 1000 -ion.

> Not to mention that a Danish "billion" is not the same as a US "billion".

Google correctly translates the Danish original "milliard" to the US "billion". A 5 (Danish) billion kroner fine would be higher than our total GDP.

> this is one of the fewer cases where US metric makes much more sense.

Don't see that. A bi-llion is million million. A tri-llion is a million million million. Makes perfect sense to me.

Phoronix have basically reported on Valve's work on "Steam for Linux" since 2008, usually backed up with some kind of evidence.

It is possible Windows 8/RT was the deciding factor in making Steam for Linux a product, but the interest in Linux is not a new thing.

It looks pretty much in line with last years anti-gmail campaign:

abrahamsen··on Why the Fuck?
Not sure about the world, but the smartest people in Denmark are likely working within the Novo Nordisk domicile, trying to work on better ways to manage diabetes with second-by-second efficiency.

They don't post a lot here, because honestly, this site has few stories that matches their interests.

It is rather arrogant to believe that the greatest minds of our generation are to be found in our field, and not e.g. in biomedicine and other fields more relevant for diabetes treatment.

abrahamsen··on Why is the C++ STL so heavily based on templates?
Bjarne Stroustrup was never a huge OOP evangelist. He spend all of 1½ page in the first edition of "The C++ Programming Language" explaining why this technique would be useful in specific situations, back when it was not widely known.

Alexander Stepanov who designed STL is very critical of OOP. Stroustrup likes quoting him, mostly to annoy the evangelists.

The C++ "party line" on the Usenet groups back when the OOP craze was at its top and C++ was a hot new upcoming language reflected Stroustrup's view. OOP was a useful technique is certain situations.

With "non-taxing" I meant "services whose load will not justify a hardware update for the next 6+ years".
abrahamsen··on AMD64 most popular architecture according to Debian popcon
The number of i386 installations have been relatively constant since 2007. All the growth has been in amd64.

I guess Debian is the kind of distribution you put on a computer that is going to to sit in a room and run the same non-taxing services for years without attention.

abrahamsen··on Valve And Xi3 Team For ‘Piston’ Steam Box
> could provide access to thousands of gaming titles

Does this mean 1) the box will be based on Windows, 2) or there have been way more progress in getting publishers to port their games to Linux than what we have heard of yet, 3) or that "could" indicates that "thousands" is a meaningless hypothetical number?

abrahamsen··on Valve And Xi3 Team For ‘Piston’ Steam Box
Unless they lock down the hardware, they will not be able to subsidize it. People will install Windows or Ubuntu on it, and use it as a standard PC, if it is cheaper than equivalent PC hardware.
abrahamsen··on Power surges in Britain caused by millions of people making tea [video]
Electrical cars with "smart" chargers. The chargers will have two settings. Express (high price, uninterrupted charging), and Economy (low price, maybe even free (fixed cost), charging controlled by the power grid, "full by the next morning").

This is has been the dream/vision of the power companies in Denmark for at least a decade. It is usually brought up when the government pressure them to generate more power from wind. Current level is 20%, goal is 50% by 2020.

Even 20% is more than is practical in isolation, but we export peak production to Germany, Norway, and Sweden. The two later have hydropower production (and no earthquakes), which can be lowered when cheap Danish excess wind power is available. Not sure that can be scaled to 50%, especially as Germany has similar plans.

> phone kernel panicked or "PagerService has stopped"

Do Googlers typically use experimental Android builds?

Googling for "android kernel panic" gives me pages about overclocked custom roms (and a MacOS X inspired game), and "PagerService has stopped" gives me exactly zero hits.

abrahamsen··on Make the Metric system the standard in the United States
A metric user would measure the same distance to "approximately 9 meters" by taking 9 large steps. This is a very common informal method of measuring distances.

It seems more practical (and certainly faster) than to measure the distance to "approximately 30 feet" by putting one foot just in front of the other 30 times.

abrahamsen··on Make the Metric system the standard in the United States
One meter is approximately one large step for a grown man.
