abpavel··on What Closing a Government Radio Station Would Mean for Clocks
I can think of a number of viable business models. It has a strong following without any marketing, and surrounding industries rely on tech for radio controlled clocks etc.

Private industry could easily profitably operate it, however the core technology - the atomic cloc - is nuclear weapon grade technology, which is simply unavailable to anyone but the government.

IP Fabric | FullStack Engineer | Prague, CZ | Full time | Onsite

We're developing network technology search engine, which can plot any of the 10^100 paths through millions of routes, visualize them in milliseconds, and show how they all change in time. Come work on the next big thing in network management to the heart of Europe.

abpavel··on Please Stop Using Adblock (But Not Why You Think)
Yet another rant by an ad proponent. Forgets to mention that there is "Acceptable ads" checkbox that can turn off all ads, and whitelisting only affects users with default settings. There is no doubting the power of ads, but personally I want many publishers to go out of business because their content is crap and clickbates.

Websites serve near viruses all the time, both content- and cookie-wise, and AdBlock is a good firewall for both visual and javascript exploits

IP Fabric | Senior FullStack NodeJS Developer | Prague, CZ | ONSITE

We're building a product for mapping and verification of global private IP networks, visually mapping life of a packet end to end and all the way down to the electrical signals. Our work helps prevent deadly network outages or find the exact cause of that spinning wheel slowness in large corporate networks by helping engineers to make sense of their networks. We're looking for developers with love for visualization and graphing (cytoscape, d3, etc.), database experience (snapshotting, scaling), and passion for innovation and challenging work. Significant experience and understanding of best practices is very welcomed. We have a very scalable business model, and we're offering ownership in the company through stock option plan. Experience with APIs and nosql databases is a must.

abpavel··on E.P.A. Prepares to Roll Back Rules Requiring Cars Be Cleaner and More Efficient
Engineers and experts come up with regulation spec, politicians merely enact it. If your toilet design requires dropping a ton of water from one foot, it will naturally not work without one ton of water. However if the manufacturer would turn on their brain however, they could easily come up with efficient jet design that requires less than 1% of previously needed fuel. Market can't adapt in many cases, like plastic bags, subprime mortgage, dogs with bank accounts, Windows and Internet Explorer bundles, and on and on and on. You can have cars with 1.5x better fuel consumption, but 1500x worse emissions. They'll call it "clean emissions".
abpavel··on Why I’m quitting GMO research
This. Something so fundamental that has been part of our civilization since forever is suddenly out of fashion because of a name.

If you'd try eating real pure non-gmo'd banana you'd break your teeth because of all the seeds, but that thing hasn't existed for millenia. Apples would be disgusting too by today's standards.

Or better yet, rank the resulting sentences for each of the possible fits using existing speech API, setting a cutoff to filter out nonsensical results. This might even yield surprises.
abpavel··on Why has CPU frequency ceased to grow? (2014)
Indeed, that's what I looked for too. The current transistor gate pitch is approaching atomic sizes, which results in electrons leaking through by quantum tunneling. I was hoping to understand more about how speed of light and quantum behavior is preventing further progress. Article only mentions transistor switching speed.

abpavel··on Flurry of Lawsuits Fight Repeal of Net Neutrality
The problem with that is cables and infrastructure. Public has paid trillions to build existing copper and fiber networks as telephones were proliferating. Ths infrastructure either has to be unbundled, or newscomers will be at immediate disadvantage, with an exception of aglomerations with high concentration of population.
abpavel··on Ask HN: Did you ever resign from a company on your first day?
Definitely let them know immediately. You not being happy in your job (because of a better offer), or you quitting within first 3 months, is much worse than saying even a day in advance that you had other offer and this is how things are. Really tell them your position, there is nothing wrong with this.

abpavel··on Report: TSMC's 3nm Fab Could Cost $20B
Atomic radius of Silicon atom is 0.11nm, which results in width of about 0.22nm. So even tightly packing atoms will make the barrier only ~13 atoms thick. Van der Waals radius is about twice that, resulting in 7-atom-wide barrier. Quantum tunneling [0] is apparent at 3nm, and gets worse from there, so I don't see how they would be preventing electrons leaking through the barrier, unless "3nm Fab" would have a shovel of marketing salt to boot.

abpavel··on Three Paths in the Tech Industry: Founder, Executive, or Employee
>> If only the executives would listen to them the company would be on the right path.

Founder is an employee, whose executives wouldn't listen to them.

I can see how it could be easier for you to "tune out", but from the Wozniak's mouse to Nokia smartphone presentations, your smirk is actually exactly correct: Employees make or break the firm. The ship will sink without them. Executives do not sufficiently listen to their employees.
