ablyveiled··on Curing brain tumors: blocking functions in cells with a docked molecule
Brain cancer can also be regulated with diet, at least in some instances. https://www.braintumourresearch.org/stories/in-hope/in-hope-...
ablyveiled··on Evidence that the shingles vaccine prevents a good chunk of dementia cases
You don't believe that our foreign environment has something to do with it?
ablyveiled··on What if we set GPT-4 free in Minecraft?
And software 4.0 is sticks and stones. har har.
ablyveiled··on Evidence that the shingles vaccine prevents a good chunk of dementia cases
This would not explain the precipitous rise in Alzhemier's rates seen in developed countries and mostly in the last few decades. I maintain that alzheimer's is type 3 diabetes.
ablyveiled··on Will deep understanding still be valuable?
Deep understanding of man-made systems? Probably not as much.

Deep understanding of Nature? As valuable as ever.

ablyveiled··on Governance of Superintelligence
The self-sampling assumption essentially says that you should reason as though your self-sampling is the likely outcome in consciousness-space-time.

It's the anthropic principle applied to the distribution/shape of intelligence.

Since your self-sample is of a human-shaped mind, human-shaped minds are the most likely outcome. So the probability of AGI is unlikely.

ablyveiled··on Governance of Superintelligence
Security is impossible. Therefore, "AI alignment" is impossible.

I'm not sure that even AGI is possible, per Bostrom's Self-Sampling Assumption.

ablyveiled··on Ketamine no better than placebo at alleviating depression, unusual trial finds
As an ex-depressive, the best cure for depression I've found is a period of ketogenic dieting.
ablyveiled··on Ask HN: I am overflowing with ideas but never finish anything
>How did you go from a chronic project starter to actually finishing and releasing projects? What can you do to keep your focus on one thing long enough to bring it to fruition?

1. Keeping extensive notes

Write down your new ideas in a location you trust and will review again in the future. If they really were good ideas, you can then come back to them.

2. Anticipate friction in-depth

I too have frittered away lots of time on disparate projects that never went anywhere. What would happen is I would lose to start and do all the fun stuff. Then I would hit a frustration of some kind and give up. You have to account for this before you start.
ablyveiled··on Which kinds of GPT startups will thrive?
GPTs are distractions. Now's a great time to aggressively pursue something else.
ablyveiled··on Beans are protein-rich and sustainable. Why doesn’t the US eat more of them?
You may find this work interesting: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4809873/
ablyveiled··on Beans are protein-rich and sustainable. Why doesn’t the US eat more of them?
>People don't need that much protein as it is, something like 40 grams/day is sufficient for an adult male who isn't trying to gain muscle.

Correct.

>Beans are good, but not a replacement for meat (too many carbs)

Beans are not a replacement for meat because they contain little-to-none of meat's micronutrients, in their bioavailable forms.

>rarely red meat.

Why?

>I mean, that's if health is a concern at all, which for most it isn't.

What country are you living in? Literally every other person in America has a chronic illness.

ablyveiled··on Beans are protein-rich and sustainable. Why doesn’t the US eat more of them?
The protein in beans is not nearly as bioavailable as the protein in meat. Further, it is not complete - it doesn't contain all the amino acids we need. Not to mention that meat contains over fifteen identified micronutrients that aren't found in any plants.

There's a good reason that meat is tasty and desirable, and beans less so. Meat is simply much more nutritious.

It seems to me that vegetarian thought like this is based out of a self-denial. Perhaps self-denial is a valid strategy when your mind and desires are addled by malnutrition and drug-foods like bread and refined sugar.

ablyveiled··on Pixel Tablet
Wireless charging kills batteries faster -- that's why I personally avoid it.
ablyveiled··on Electronics Lab Bench Setup Guide
I wish I had the living situation to implement this.
ablyveiled··on 100K Context Windows
What's the catch? Using GPT-4 relative to its own marketing copy was a letdown.
ablyveiled··on Place mushrooms in sunlight to get your vitamin D (2012)
I'm sure. Just trying to illustrate that there's no total replacement for the "real thing".

You may say "of course", but we have people like Bryan Johnson running on drug/supplement cocktails, in a "scientistic" pursuit of Goodhart's Law.

I just hope that he falls apart visibly rather than invisibly, so others don't try to follow in his footsteps.

ablyveiled··on Place mushrooms in sunlight to get your vitamin D (2012)
People eating ketogenic/carnivorous diets for autoimmune or blood sugar issues have much higher LDL volumes (although their LDL particles are also fluffier and less oxidized)
ablyveiled··on Place mushrooms in sunlight to get your vitamin D (2012)
I haven't Indexed It in my Memex or anything, but look into the work of Paul Mason or Ray Peat (to look into "pro-cholesterol" thought generally)

https://raypeat.com/articles/articles/cholesterol-longevity....

ablyveiled··on Place mushrooms in sunlight to get your vitamin D (2012)
One of the problems with supplementing vitamin D is that vitamin D is made from cholesterol. There are certainly some benefits to supplementing vitamin D, but if you get it exogenously rather than manufacture it, your cholesterol will be higher.

Not that cholesterol is anywhere close to the demon it's made out to be, but there is a (much higher than generally accepted) point of having too much where mortality risk increases.

ablyveiled··on Running SunOS 4 in QEMU (Sparc)
Those installation profiles remind me of `archinstall`. Of course, the choices there are more about the fragmented linux userspace than one's vocation.
ablyveiled··on The Best Pens for 2023: Gel, Ballpoint, Rollerball, and Fountain Pens
I've tried a few fancy pens, but still prefer my Pilot G2 07s.
ablyveiled··on Loneliness reshapes the brain
>In behavioral studies, lonely people picked up on negative social signals, such as images of rejection, within 120 milliseconds — twice as quickly as people with satisfying relationships and in less than half the time it takes to blink.

Depression smells like a significant confounding factor here. Indeed, the article may be re-written "depression reshapes the brain", which, like, yeah, ok.

ablyveiled··on Emacs is on F-Droid
For those playing along at home, here's where I got to with doom emacs -

- You can't just "git clone" doom emacs using a rooted termux, because /data/data/org.gnu.emacs/ is read-only.

- So it seems that you have to use the emacs process. I went to buffers -> scratch to get a keyboard, and then used https://f-droid.org/en/packages/juloo.keyboard2/ to `M-x shell`.

- You don't have `git` in this shell, but you can still download doomemacs from github using

  curl -LJO https://github.com/doomemacs/doomemacs/archive/refs/heads/master.zip
- and `unzip` the archive, moving it into place.

- .emacs.d/bin/doom is just a shell script, so you can invoke installation with

- `sh .emacs.d/bin/doom install`

- This is where I left off, for this script fails with "`emacs` not found on path".

All-in-all, a very, very exciting release! I hope somebody else manages to hack this.

ablyveiled··on Ask HN: Why is SBF not in prison yet?
Does being despised by tens of millions necessarily make one suicidal? I've never been in that position.
ablyveiled··on Joe Rogan Interviews Steve Jobs
Reminds me of Neuromancer's Flatline construct.
ablyveiled··on “When are we going to use this in our everyday life?” (2017)
>Don't you want to understand a fundamental part of how the universe in which you exist works?

Only for a reasonable price. The price differs between individuals for many meaty and mindful reasons.
