abirch··on Anthropic's best AI model struggles to attract users as cheaper tools thrive
Vanguard does get some support right as they tier their support based on how much you're worth. Businesses need to focus on Lifetime Value of their customers and realize that some of their marketing budget would be better spent in support.
abirch··on Hook, hold, harvest and hide: Meta's alleged strategy laid out in first week
Buy a copy of Careless People to read between the tears.
abirch··on Grand jury declines to indict Ohio man charged with destroying Flock camera
This is why it's important for us to show up and do jury duty even if it's not sexy. You can make a difference.
abirch··on A Preview of DuckDB v2.0
DuckDB out of the box may not be great. But you have DuckLake, Quack, and even DeepSeek made their own distributed DB based on DuckDB: https://github.com/deepseek-ai/smallpond
abirch··on Self hosted email continues to steeply decline
It's not in the current providers' interest to help people avoid the current providers' advertisement or avoid paying the providers to host the customers' email.
abirch··on AI in drug discovery – what it is, where we stand and the path forward
I completely agree with you. Data quality is the most important. One thing that's sad is how much academic data that's not reproducible. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replication_crisis
abirch··on Asynchronous I/O in DuckDB: Work, Thread, Work
Thank you so much. I love DuckDB!
abirch··on Semaglutide linked to lower predicted dementia risk
Jason Fung has preached against modern processed foods that destroy insulin sensitivity. Even artificial sweeteners can raise Insulin levels. His book "The Obesity Code" is a must read and discusses some of the pathways that link insulin and leptin (a hormone associated with eating)

TLDR; I'm a Fungster: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoyL4iGArWn5Hu0V_sAhK2w

abirch··on Gemini 3.7 Flash
A pet peeve of mine is that Google doesn't let you search all the options like Apple or Microsoft E.g., I have flashbacks to trying to turn off or on bells in Google Home. A simple search bar would help people trying find API keys, etc.
abirch··on Choose Boring Technology (2015)
I see it as analogous to people are frequently rewarded for putting out the fire instead of preventing the fire.
abirch··on Flock updates privacy, accountability, security, and transparency safeguards
I meant practically the right to privacy is wrong: I should have the right but I don't expect it. Similar to not being robbed is a right, but I don't expect it at times and in all locations.
abirch··on Flock updates privacy, accountability, security, and transparency safeguards
I would say that the right to privacy is wrong but it's not bad. Mass surveillance is dangerous. It back fired spectacularly in like what happened in Iran: https://www.cnn.com/2026/03/03/middleeast/us-israel-plot-kil...
abirch··on Flock updates privacy, accountability, security, and transparency safeguards
please remember to start locally. If your city/town is using it, please build a coalition and show up to meetings.
abirch··on AI Generated 3D Models Flood Market, but Almost No One Is Buying Them
Unfortunately we've experienced the basic economics of spam. It costs virtually nothing to spam emails and so the spammers exploited that. Now it costs virtually nothing to spam markets with AI slop. Platforms need anti-slop filters and the easiest one is to charge x dollars per model to publish there.
abirch··on uBlock Origin is giving up the fight to keep ads off Facebook
The difficult thing is people don't want to pay for things. Ads are a way to mitigate that so that people/companies can capture some value that they create.
abirch··on License plate reader searches should require a warrant
If we simply mandated that everyone install an app on their phone so that the government can track them scales very well. The people without the app would probably be criminals,
abirch··on The “mechanical miracle” that ruined Mark Twain’s life
When I heard that story, I couldn't help but thing of Steve Jobs "Real Artists Ship." The device was good but the inventor was a perfectionist instead of an entrepreneur.
abirch··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
The difference is the quantity. Meta has already had a face logging feature in its glasses https://www.wired.com/story/meta-smart-glasses-face-recognit...

So it'd be less likely that someone would film me and upload it to instagram or facebook.

abirch··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
If someone signs in and gives up their privacy, I don't care. Where I do care is when someone with their pervert glasses captures an image of me at my kid's little league game and now I'm getting ads based on that.
abirch··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
Probably different concerns. If you had a home video and I was in the background I wouldn't care. The odds of anyone recognizing me would be low. If you upload it to anyone using mass AI (YouTube, Meta, etc.) then I care a lot.
abirch··on LinkedIn Feed Blocker
I spun up an extension to open links in incognito, something that wasn't possible with the native desktop webpage that would always refer you back to a linkedin link to redirect.
abirch··on LinkedIn Feed Blocker
My biggest question is why isn't there something better than Linked In? I get the network effect but Linked in is crap.
abirch··on Herdr is joining Y Combinator. The runtime stays open
Yes there are companies such as Streak. It's possible to pay back early funders so it's a win-win.
abirch··on Oracle cut its Always Free ARM limits to 2 OCPU / 12GB, enforced Aug 18
Are there any other incredibily generous offerings out there for computer resources? What are the best things that I'm not using?
abirch··on Changes at Google DeepMind: Demis Hassabis from CEO to Chair, Jeff Dean departs
I give it a 51% chance of Discovery Loop being acquired by Google
abirch··on Three Six Mafia – Data about "6/6/6 dating" (2024)
Maybe we can get the USA to get the metric system for all those men who are 1.83 meters and below. Or do people internationally say that you need to be 1,8 meters to be dateable?
abirch··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
Regarding Iraq, please Google “Dick Cheney 1994” he predicted exactly what happened in 2003.
abirch··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
If you don’t have an objective, no amount of military might is going to get you there. This was the USA’s biggest mistake in Afghanistan, Iraq, and now Iran.
abirch··on The AI Demand Bubble
In order to be invited on TV you must be entertaining first. You don't have to be correct in order to appear more times.

Personally I'm of the mindset that the current AI prices are too rich and that AI is very useful. Much like high speed internet in 2000. The prices were too high but the services themselves are great.

abirch··on An Honest Review of AI Programming
If people misuse or don't understand a tool, that doesn't invalidate the usefulness of the tool.
