abirch··on Neovim have a ~$800k Bitcoin donation sitting untouched since 2023
Bitcoin's supposed to be "liquid" but I'm wondering what happens when there's a forced liquidity event.
abirch··on Training a 4B model to produce 81% faster query plans than Postgres
Like this scene from Pirates of Silicon Valley between Bill Gates and Steve Jobs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBri-xgYvHQ Bill was saying that Steve was stealing from Xerox so it's okay if Bill stole from Xerox first.
abirch··on America's Driver's License Breach Is a National Security Disaster
What I would love to know is who is selling my info. I get texts from all kinds of politicians but I didn't know who sold them my number. Seems like selling someone's property without their approval should be illegal. It'd be great if I could request who sold them my data, then go to that entity tell them to stop selling (rinse and repeat)
abirch··on CSS-Tricks in Limbo
Oddly enough if the scraping is good, AI can find the CSS tricks in the wild. Not as applicable with other technologies but scrapable web is readable for AI much like how some of us old people learned html/css by looking at source of quality websites.
abirch··on Leaving Linux
I use Claude and Gemini to customize things for me all the time. If something doesn't work the way that I want it, I let AI fix it (I do back up and maintain scripts to revert back to its current stage).
abirch··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils
"The Linux philosophy is 'Laugh in the face of danger'. Oops. Wrong One. 'Do it yourself'. Yes, that's it." Linus Torvalds
abirch··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
or mastodon...
abirch··on Rockstar had a mole in the union worker discord server
Since this is from court filings, that would be perjury if they can't back it up.
abirch··on Rockstar had a mole in the union worker discord server
That's classic game theory. It'd be better if everyone refuses to defect.
abirch··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
I would say misuse AI for mental health advice. It's already difficult to find good mental health professionals.
abirch··on Thanks to Siri Recaps, your Apple Watch is always listening
I would love to have AI that can help support my fragmented memory. As my mom said, I'd forget my head if it wasn't attached. However, this requires a lot of TRUST with the company this access. Apple is the only big tech I could trust but I'm still unsure.
abirch··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
I’m a die hard engineer, yet when I see Apple, Microsoft, and Google marketing: it makes me realize the importance of marketing.
abirch··on DHS 'Predictive Policing' Unit Is Analyzing Americans' Financial Habits
Don't forget about civil forfeiture where the government sues the alleged drug money.
abirch··on AlphaGenome Atlas: a high-resolution map of human DNA
Probably. I know Google has partnerships with Pharma: https://www.merck.com/news/merck-and-google-cloud-partner-to...
abirch··on GOP issues stark warning to AI companies
Unfortunately in the USA, most of the house of representative districts are not competitive and an incumbent is more likely to lose in a primary than in the general. Working to do something with the other side seems to be unpopular these days.
abirch··on Windows 11's "special" developer edition looks like another marketing misfire
I refuse to use windows at home. I'll use it at work, but it's either Xubuntu or MacOS at home. I couldn't be happier.
abirch··on Meet the Ig Nobel Prize Winners
The damage done will take decades to fix if it can be fixed. No idea why any other NATO nation would buy any weapons from the USA.
abirch··on AI handles incidents, engineers lose touch with their systems
That makes more sense than Rocket Propelled Automation that was my hallucination.
abirch··on Hackers had a live feed of every ID verification company scanned for over a year
Yes, very rural place or the woods. No idea about taxes, etc. I remember him explaining that you only need a SSN if you want to receive it and a diatribe about the mark of the beast.

When the guy was trying to get a passport, he asked if anyone could show a picture of him from our high school yearbook.

abirch··on Hackers had a live feed of every ID verification company scanned for over a year
I think this is the horse shoe theory where the far left and right are against it. https://www.aclu.org/press-releases/aclu-conservative-and-li...

I know people who don't have a social security number because their parents didn't want them to be tracked by the system.

abirch··on Hackers had a live feed of every ID verification company scanned for over a year
The difficulty for the US is people seem to be against a Federal Government ID. India doesn't seem to have this stigma and hence rural India can solve this problem.
abirch··on New York Times and The Athletic workers demand company scrap Kalshi deal
I'll leave this here, Donald Trump Jr got a free stake in Kalshi. https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/options/articles/donald-tr...
abirch··on Grok Outage
My Claude and Gemini (Antigravity CLI) are working
abirch··on Mark Cuban: Why US hospitals "don't know their costs"
Elective surgeries have fallen in price because many no longer occur in hospitals. In the USA, ERs have to treat everyone regardless of their ability to pay. That's why you see a lot of urgent care.
abirch··on Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.8 Flash Cyber
Gemini hasn't failed me for personal usage yet. I haven't had the opportunity to use it at work.
abirch··on What if everything we know about recycling is wrong?
Not to mention the microplastics. Plus the Solo cups are transported over a great distance as well, between the fuel and packaging it could easily triple their carbon costs.
abirch··on Sonic Pi
Is it worth a human reading it or not? There are many, insipid human-writers (me included). Historically I got a lot of value of reading info posted on HN.
abirch··on Lake Ontario ("Lake America")
Or a future president renaming Mar-a-lago as Epstein's Resort... this opens the door to all kinds of petty behavior.
abirch··on Lake Ontario ("Lake America")
This is Idiocracy the movie IRL. I can't wait for plants to need electrolytes.
abirch··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
Unfortunately for me, when I hear music it's from the horrible audio of a cell phone speaker.
