abhiminator··on Cybersecurity Isn't Special
>We're paid to find risk and reduce risk.

There's a dedicated department that already does that in most organizations -- risk management.

One could argue that 'cybersecurity' ought to be a component of 'risk management' versus being on its own which only adds to bloated organization structure and increases bureaucratic complexity.

abhiminator··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
It's almost like you're teleported into browsing a different, parallel (and a way worse) web with a shitty UX when you turn off your ad-blocker.
abhiminator··on Tell HN: Twitter switched temporarily to rate limited mode
ZDNet published an article just yesterday that looked into Twitter's engagement data and it looks like Twitter is bleeding users like never before. [0]

abhiminator··on Bullshit Jobs (2018)
Unabomber manifesto reads more like an unhinged rant written by some resentful, middle-aged Anon on 4chan than a piece of academic literature -- Ted Kaczynski somehow managed to fill 32 pages of it with racist, misogynistic and incomprehensible rambling with zero citations.

Also, the fact that he literally had to threaten people to force the publication of his "manifesto" says it all to me. [0]

abhiminator··on Reddit is removing moderators that protest by taking their communities private
Reminds me of Russ Hanneman's obsession with the three commas and the 'Tres Comas' tequila from HBO'S Silicon Valley.

I'm hindsight, it's crazy how accurate that show was in portraying a lot of the VC and Silicon Valley folks in general.

abhiminator··on Amazon to lay off 9,000 more workers after earlier cuts
These are all symptoms of the end of 'cheap' money essentially. World's been running on QE for a long time now, and most millennials and Gen Z folks (myself included) haven't seen/lived in a world without QE.

This is all regression toward the mean. The next couple years should be interesting.

abhiminator··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
Bailout? Sounds like an '08 déjà vu again.

It's crazy to realize how brazen Wall Street bankers and Hedge Fund managers are when it comes to asking for taxpayer dollars during distress, while decrying any attempt to add to that taxpayer dollar pool from their billions in earnings when the times are good.

abhiminator··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
I'm curious as to how many people will actually end up sending crypto to that modified address.

I think that's a problem that can easily be solved by training the models on 'trusted links' mode.

abhiminator··on SBF Arrested by Bahamian Authorities
Can't wait for the trial now.
abhiminator··on Dublin Whiskey Fire
This has to be the most 'Irish' mishap in history ever, perhaps.

>People drank from the 6 inches (150 mm) deep river of whiskey that is said to have flowed as far as the Coombe.

Can't help but laugh hysterically whilst imagining this scene. Guess I found a brand new piece of trivia to share with my Irish friends and co-workers.

The Irish have been amongst the nicest and the most 'jolly' group of people I've known/worked with. Look very forward to visiting the island someday.

abhiminator··on Tesla to Cut 10% of Jobs
I was a lot more vulnerable to manipulation via propaganda and good PR back when I was a college student, I suppose. Aside from the naïvety of late teens/early 20s.
abhiminator··on Tesla to Cut 10% of Jobs
It's sad really. I used to idolize him so much. I read through all of WaitButWhy's [0] blog post series on Musk back in '15/'16 and loved every bit of it. He literally became my demigod during my undergrad days.

And from all that... to this?

From a much admired and respected 'inventor' to a cringeworthy Twitter 'edgelord.' Just been a crazy ride.

abhiminator··on Hexells – Self-Organising System of Cells Drawing Textures [WebGL]
Not to mention the resource utilization. I feel the code could be more optimized for a WebGL-based project.

abhiminator··on Latvia wants permanent U.S. troops, foreign minister tells Blinken
When push comes to shove, it's D.C. they call, not Beijing or Moscow (definitely not in this case, haha).
abhiminator··on James Webb telescope reaches its final destination in space, million miles away
Ars Technica did a well-written story on it recently -- https://arstechnica.com/science/2022/01/all-hail-the-ariane-...
abhiminator··on Stealth bomber in flight on Google Maps
>After the defense cutbacks in the 90s, he could only find minimum wage jobs for the rest of his working life.

That's unfortunate to hear. Hope he's doing well now, in his retirement life.

abhiminator··on Facebook-owned sites were down
That's a pretty accurate description of the site, lol.

On a side-note, I think you'll enjoy some of the videos by the YouTube 'Internet Historian' on 4chan:

abhiminator··on A search engine that favors text-heavy sites and punishes modern web design
Thank you!
abhiminator··on A search engine that favors text-heavy sites and punishes modern web design
Absolute textgasm.

Wonder how 'text-only first' prioritization is being implemented, algorithmically speaking?

abhiminator··on Firefox 92

abhiminator··on Amtrak might add more routes, but they won't be faster than a car
It's also about saving a night's worth of hotel/accommodation money, especially if you happen to be a broke college student traveling across the country on a budget (like I was not too long ago).

I absolutely love overnight 'sleeper car' train journeys.

abhiminator··on M 7.2 Earthquake 12 km NE of Saint-Louis du Sud, Haiti
Haiti and the surrounding regions are tectonically f'cked, unfortunately.

At least the United States is relatively close by, so humanitarian assistance isn't super far away. I remember the US deploying its hospital ships, among other resources, to assist Haiti in the aftermath of the 2010 quake, under operation 'Unified Response.' [0]

abhiminator··on Hungarian journalists and critics of Orbán were targeted with Pegasus

abhiminator··on The vital art of talking to strangers
Beautiful story. Please pass on my gratitude to your lawyer buddy for making that stranger's life better. Gosh, HN can be wonderfully soothing sometimes! :)
abhiminator··on The James Webb Space Telescope has passed the final mission analysis review
On a related note, I highly, highly recommend watching this well-made documentary on JWST, released around 3 and a half years ago -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLD9LKq0u9E

This documentary was produced by Northrop Grumman Corporation -- the builders of JWST under a NASA contract.

abhiminator··on I Miss the Old Internet (2019)
Below are some relevant articles I keep going back to that highlight the same phenomenon on the 'decay' of web as a platform (by decay I mean extreme commercialization, excessive bloat, endless tracking and whatnot) made by the linked forum post's author:

* https://pxlnv.com/blog/bullshit-web/

* https://danluu.com/web-bloat/

* https://medium.com/digital-diplomacy/the-world-wide-web-is-d...

Can't help but agree with most of their assertions.

Also, I just noticed that the author of this forum post uses 'internet' in place of what I feel should be 'web/world wide web' (just some pedantry from me tbh).

abhiminator··on Fastly Outage

abhiminator··on Fastly Outage
Holy smokes these Wikipedia writers are quick! I'm sometimes impressed by how fast a page on a super recent happening gets populated with all of the currently known details.
abhiminator··on Fastly Outage
PayPal seems to be working for me at the moment. Rest of the sites are 503s.
