abhianet··on British Airways: All flights cancelled amid IT crash
Is that not how Amadeus happened?
abhianet··on The rise of AI is creating new variety in the chip market, and trouble for Intel
> But the GPUs also have new destinations: notably data centres where artificial-intelligence (AI) programmes gobble up the vast quantities of computing power that they generate.

Should not it be "programs"? Or is "programmes" used in some dialect of English I am not aware of?

abhianet··on Streama – A self-hosted streaming application with your own media library
It's like Netflix, but distributed! https://popcorntime.sh/en

Snarkiness aside, this is beautiful!

abhianet··on Stoicism: Indifference is a power
Truly forgotten. I have read a number of works by Smith but never came across this one. Would be adding this to me reading-list.

On a side note, this sounds a lot like The Bhagvad Gita[1]. Is there a relationship between these two works, or is it just great minds thinking alike?

abhianet··on Secret Backdoor in Some U.S. Phones Sent Data to China, Analysts Say
This can also be read outside the states as follows:

For about $50, you can get a smartphone with a high-definition display, fast data service and, according to security contractors, a secret feature: a backdoor that sends all your text messages to the USA every few seconds.

Security contractors recently discovered preinstalled software in some Android phones that monitors where users go, whom they talk to and what they write in text messages. The authorities say it is not clear whether this represents secretive data mining for advertising purposes or a government effort to collect intelligence.

Cool. I wonder how they test this stuff.

What happens if I send it a mail from an mlooper address? Can I get it to setup an infinite loop?
abhianet··on In defence of Douglas Crockford
Completely off the topic, but interesting to know nonetheless. It always makes it worth the time spent going through comments on HN to find such buried gems.
abhianet··on Ad Blocking Wars: Ad Blockers vs. Ad-Tech (2015)
This is a more technical viewpoint. A more holistic view would have considered native ads, ads disguised as content, or even content disguised as ads.

It is more attractive to look at WASM as a way to bring a lot of other languages into the web. We are already transpiling a lot of code, ES7, TypeScript, ClojureScript, Dart, and so on. I would say WASM makes a lot better target than JS will ever be.
abhianet··on Self driving cars crash five times as much as regular ones
IMHO autonomous driving systems still do not mix well with humans on the road. Could even say they are not compatible with each other. With how things have been going, soon we would have systems predicting behavior of human driver for safer driving. But by then, roads will have humans, systems predicting human behavior and systems released between the two without prediction.

abhianet··on What are your favourite sci-fi books?
I wonder why no one mentioned "The Hitchhiker's Guide to Galaxy" (Douglas Adams) yet. I died laughing twice while reading it.
