abeTom··on Ask HN: Recent denial of H1-B visas for low paying IT positions systematic?
We need to be savvy enough or real world wise enough to understand that our technical knowledge loss to these nations could and should have been kept from happening made very difficult to transfer such knowledge to these nations. We financed our own demise. More recently, Companies such as Global Crossing enabled the deployment of otherwise unaffordable means of connecting these nations to fast networks that allowed them to accelerate their taking away our jobs and technical know how. Suffice it to say that our retirement funds invested by wall street firms financed companies like "Global Crossing". By the way, for all those people whose retirement funds were invested in Global Crossing, they lost it. The Chinese army known as the PLA has a unit devoted purely for hacking into American and European defense contractors in order to steal and suck away every last bit of engineering data. Any way I will stop. I should not have opened my mouth. sometimes its better to shut up.
abeTom··on Ask HN: Recent denial of H1-B visas for low paying IT positions systematic?
Didn't want to write all this but feel that people need to open their eyes and see whats going on. I for one am glad that something is finally being done after 35 to 45 years of bleeding our jobs to workers from other countries. These people were taking away our jobs and transferring them to Indian outsourcing firms. Essentially stealing jobs created here and moving them to India and the Philippians. Once you include all the manufacturing plants and know how that was transferred to China, Japan, South Korea etc.. ( rough estimate of just the manufacturing plants that were sent to China alone is 45,000 to 60,000)

China required American companies to transfer technology in order to sell in china. Once they got a hold of the transferred tech, they copied and built it on their own and they no longer needed to buy from American companies. They stole all our defense and engineering tech from our defense contractors as well.

All current tech that are the prime generators of jobs and profit were created or brought to commercial success here in the USA essentially for the defense of the nation during and after its major wars. Along with a great deal of standards in many disciplines (medicine, finance, Research and development , engineering, transportation, power generation and distribution, governmental oversight and judicial transparency etc.. can go on and on and on.) These standards were a huge give away since we had to spend enormous amounts of money and resources and decades to create them. They were given freely to our competing nations. They started with these standards that we had to spend a hundred years time money and resources to build and codify. And, Oh by the way, most of the engineering, computer science, math, physics, biology, chemistry texts and curriculum was translated and copied from American and European universities and taught in China, India, Korea, Japan etc.. all these countries depended not only on America to take our technology but also the training texts and know how to teach its workers and students. While we trained and cultured our students towards entertainment oriented fields, they recognized the value of physics, math, engineering, etc.. Subjects that America essentially created or dominated are now the domain of competing nations.

To top it all off, AI and bio/genetic engineering is now being co opted by china. If I were to list all the tech that is now permanently gone to our competing nations, its just too depressing.

The Indian tech companies are great at sending unqualified workers here with doctored resumes and work/education histories. They train their h1b workers to replace qualified American workers and pay them less. As an added bonus, they were given all the most private databases of American households and corporations without any regard to security, Hence, all the wonderful identity theft and sales calls from India and the Philippians.

A good part of the blame goes to wall street for enabling all this in order to maximize share holder value at the expense of the American middle class and, just as importantly , the American higher educational system that ill trained its students and workers for subjects that were needed in the new economies. The horrible professors and schools that were relying on outdated instructional methods to convey complex concepts in math and physics and engineering to the average to below average students. rather than just focusing on the few outstanding student, they should have focused most of the resources and effort on the average to below average students and they needed to be trained. These are the lost workers whose lives have been destroyed by the opioid crisis. Their tragic state was avoidable.

Wall street initially financed these foreign countries by investing in these corporations.

Japan, Korea, China, India, SE Asia etc.. all these nations have as their primary industries things that were developed and transferred in one form another from the USA.

Its nothing but tragic and sad and the future of American children i really feel sad for. The urban poor who should have benefited from Americas development lost it all to the countries mentioned above.

these industries and their know how will never come back to the USA, they are gone gone gone. All the lifetime of R/D and knowledge built by the past generations of Americans were summarily given handed over to these nations and they will never ever give them back. Its lost. They would never be stupid enough to do what we did and give away our jewels.

Meanwhile, bill gates and others like him are concerned about the worlds poor, which is fine, but they needed to be concerned a little more about the poor and middle class of America.

abeTom··on Which libraries are we missing in Elixir world which are rocking in RoR world?
In my opinion, focusing on web frameworks (emulating ror,for example) as the the major reason to write libraries with elixir is self defeating. Elixir should have the larger goal of being useful for developing in up and coming fields as ai/ml etc.. Otherwise it will be stuck as another web dev language which I think is quite saturated at this point. At least 15 to 20 years of such web framework dev languages and their libraries are already in existence so why keep adding to it?
abeTom··on Ask HN: What is the fundamental difference between engineering and marketing?
That's like asking, "what's the difference between the f22 and its sales brochure?" Not trying to be mean, but I don't understand the comparison. They are wholly different in nature.

Engineering takes a desired outcome in the physical or virtual world and, using principals of math(computer science), physics and chemistry, reduced to reliable functional mechanisms aggregated in a logical fashion, constructs a device that produces on demand the desired outcome.

Marketing, on the other hand, takes a desired outcome in sales and, using the powers of persuasion, produces the desired outcome of greater sales ( I suppose).

so,

  engineering ===> math, physics, chemistry.

    marketing ===> persuasion.
abeTom··on Ask HN: What is the one thing that keeps you up at night?
I wonder if the economy is truly on firm footing. Since the industrial heartland has been stripped starting in the seventies and excessive financialization of what remains from the 80s on wards. After the collapse of 2008, the only thing that keeps the economy up in any meaningful way is the global central banks infusing play money into the system and building an illusion.

As long as the world is willing to go along with this illusion, it's not a problem. But once that confidence is lost, I dread to think what will happen. I think that once the baby boomers enter into retirement en mas and start impacting on pension plans that are not likely to return to its participants what they were expecting and health services and selling their real and financial assets(stocks, bonds etc..) to finance their retirement life, real valuation will implode.

People living in cities are especially vulnerable as all their daily means of existence relies on outside sources. Water, food and every other essential is trucked into cities. Anyway, it may take 10 to 15 years but I hope there is a way out this mess.

abeTom··on Ask HN: How to get starting data for ML B2B product?
raw data from bls bureau of labor statistics, federal reserve, sec, department of commerce, osha and other govermental agencies that collect such data.
abeTom··on Ask HN: Did I hit the Programming Wall?
ps. Dave Thomas has an excellent book on elixir programming.

please read in chapter one the section titled:

"Programming Should Be About Transforming Data"

it addresses point by point your and his concern with object oriented programming. you will be amazed. you might be able to read that part on amazon kindle preview.

abeTom··on Ask HN: Why do you believe that your religion/faith/worldview is correct?
A God who defines His paramount and most important characteristic as being Holy not His power. The God Jehovah Jesus HolySpirit is the God who is worthy of being called God. Scientific reasoning only proves to me the existence of God as does historical evidence. The levels and layers of interdependent complexities in the universe and living things in the macro and micro are without a doubt proof of such an amazingly intelligent and powerful being.

Some things that confuse me are the stories of a global flood occurring and as a result all humans deriving from noah. Why God seems to be amazing when it comes to math and science and yet He spends a lot of his interaction with us on the foibles of man because we are obviously flawed creatures ( I know that I am ). As though He is surprised by how wretched and evil we are at times.

Evolution just seems to be the self generative and adaptive mechanistic process by which God seems to build complex from the simple. I think that doing it this way is harder than to just produce fully formed complex systems whole cloth. It is actually a more thought out and elegant method of producing robust survivable beings.

Just as an aside, it almost seems to me that when he created this universe, He first started with what a human needs to be in order to have dexterity (fingers etc..), intelligence, communication (vocal cords) and so on. Working backwards creating a physical programming language(dna, rna) that synthesizes molecules tailored exactly so for biochemical systems, to atoms to subatomic particles and the forces/fields that govern/marshal these discrete particles.

Amazingly, these 92 elements had to be created in generations of stars and neutron stars as only the simple element hydrogen existed.

sorry for rambling on.

abeTom··on Ask HN: How do you think mankind is going to 'solve' climate change?
No chance whatsoever that the major industrial nations, developed and developing, will ever come to an agreement that they will actually implement. What ever they agree to will not be implemented. The problem is that it would destroy their economies and consequently, jobs.

Even if they would implement it, it is too far gone, I think. I'm sure that at some point clean energy tech will truly be viable but right now it is not capable of replacing fossil fuel in an economical manner. And I truly think that the damage(burning fossil fuel) already done up till now and the near future have hit the point at which its effects are not reversible as far as climate change is concerned.

At an intuitive or visceral level, people already know this is the case and they are just too afraid to admit it.

The only hope is to tackle the problem by removing carbon from the atmosphere by technological means. Is technological development in the future capable of removing such an enormous volume of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere? I hope so but really don't think so.

The problem is that millions of years of carbon being removed from the atmosphere and sequestered has been put back in the atmosphere in a hundred years. Only a process having exponentially greater impact than the one that put it in the ground would be able to stem the destructive changes we face. This technology would have to be developed in short order.

abeTom··on Ask HN: What technology should a fresh CS grad learn in 2017
ai, ml, a bit of robotics (micro controllers, sensors, actuators, how to interface and program it, control theory). functional programming such as elixir, genetic algorithms etc... and just as interesting would be to pursue nanotech. or you can always go the web dev path and be totally unoriginal.
abeTom··on Ask HN: How to deal with Indian people?
By the way, you should know that my experiences with indians are similar to yours but you speak of them as though you or your kind are somehow better. no your not!!! Get off that fricken judgement seat of yours. A little bit of humility might help.
abeTom··on Ask HN: How to deal with Indian people?
Need I go into the backstabbing, rude self important behavior of slavic/eastern euros. The ones I have met think they are Gods gift to mankind, and what they lack in coding ability they often hide by distraction. Taking a shower on occasion seems beyond their ken. So stfu you are no better.
abeTom··on Ask HN: Is the ability to program required for a good system administrator?
I would not hire someone who claims to be a sys admin but has not coded( assuming that a sys admin is someone who would have a computer science or engineering background). Sys admins deal with processes and processes are nothing more than code executing on hardware. This would imply that at some level of your training you would have to have had exposure to hardware(computer architecture/organization, assembly language, discrete math) and how code brings about the desired outcome from that hardware at a systems level. That such a question is even asked frightens me about who is managing systems these days.
