They're turning Gaza into a hell, now planning to "conquer" it and clean it off of Hamas (and the evidence for war crimes), then they'll say, we're already here, we might as well take it.

I solved it by generating English subtitles, then passing those to an LLM in chunks that are ~20 entries in size. Include preceding and following subtitles as context for better translation. Make sure to replace the timestamps with simple integer ids, because LLMs like to mangle those, no matter how hard you prompt.

I could share a python script that is working pretty reliably for me.

abdusco··on How I use Tailscale
I tried using `tailscale funnel` against a dummy server `python -m http.server`, and within 10 seconds the bots started to check for vulnerabilities.

Tailscale warns you about how enabling it will issue an HTTPS certificate which will be in a public ledger. But I wasn't expecting it to be this quick.

abdusco··on Uv: Running a script with dependencies
I still write small some scripts in golang when the bootup time is important. Python still takes its time to boot up, and it's not the best tool for the job if it's gonna be called like a shell utility for thousands of files, for example.
abdusco··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
Autoruns utility still exists.

abdusco··on Frankenstein's `__init__`
My go-to is a factory classmethod:

    class Foo:
        def __init__(self, config: Config): ...

        @classmethod
        def from_config_file(cls, filename: str):
          config = # parse config file
          return cls(config)

Smaller binary sizes for easier + cheaper distribution might be a factor.
abdusco··on YouTube shows AI dubbed audio track options for some videos
It sounds like cheap dubbed documentations. But it is certainly useful.

abdusco··on Quit Social Media (2016)
I use Kiwi Browser on Android, which is a Chrome-based browser with extension support. I have a userscript that gradually fades out and desaturates social media pages in 8 minutes. After 4-5 minutes, pages fade out so much that you are forced to stop scrolling and it's not enjoyable anymore.

The same can be done on Firefox, which supports installing Tampermonkey for managing userscripts.

abdusco··on Sanding UI
I think it's for material design inspired focus animations. :has selector wasn't a thing, so you have to use + sibling selector to target the label of a focused input

    input:focus + label {}
    label:has(input:focus) {}

abdusco··on Taildrop lets you send files between your personal devices on Tailscale network
Use the CLI. It prints the transfer speed and progress:

    /Applications/Tailscale.app/Contents/MacOS/Tailscale file cp /path/to/file my-device-name:
(The colon : at the end is not a typo.)
abdusco··on How to process 100gb tsv and XML files?
For TSV, you might wanna consider importing it into a Sqlite database, then querying it however you please.

https://stackoverflow.com/a/35454070/5298150

You can also use datasette & sqlite utils for it

abdusco··on gRPC: The Bad Parts
> make requests even if you don't have the .proto around

Like this?

    > grpcurl -d '{"id": 1234, "tags": ["foo","bar"]}' \
        grpc.server.com:443 my.custom.server.Service/Method
How is that even possible? How could grpcurl know how to translate your request to binary?
abdusco··on Start all of your commands with a comma (2009)
> I'd never (not so far) encounter a word or text that starts with a comma immediately followed by anything.

Agreed. I prefer using `!bang`s for the same reason for expanding text.

abdusco··on Apple is finally bringing RCS messaging to the iPhone

abdusco··on Qimgv – Fast, simple image viewer
I've always been a fan of Faststone Image Viewer. It's similarly small and packed with features.

abdusco··on Loyalty at work no longer pays – and it's employers who are to blame
I am asking because I never tried this. Isn't it better to earn more and take unpaid leaves than having 2 more weeks of paid leaves? 2 weeks of extra unpaid leave = 1/2 a month's pay, meaning you could afford to do it if you earn 4% more yearly.
abdusco··on Show HN: Every mountain, building and tree shadow mapped for any date and time

abdusco··on Introducing Copilot+ PCs
I tried Windows on UTM (based on qemu, I believe) and the graphics were choppy. I attributed that to the lack of graphics acceleration. Is it also the same on Parallels?
abdusco··on Borgo is a statically typed language that compiles to Go
I observed the same thing happen for YouTube videos in the last couple of years and it drives me crazy. I don't need 20 different comments fishing for likes that try hard to compliment something, and point out how this creator does something that others don't. They're everywhere!
abdusco··on Textual Healing: iOS Text Editing Minutiae
I really like this feature on Jetbrains IDEs, called "camel humps". If I wanna select the entire identifier I click somewhere within then hit Control + G or Option + Up (which expands the selection based on AST)
