abcd_f··on Freeway guardrails are now a favorite target of thieves
This was in the news. Thieves got caught. They were Romanian gypsies.
abcd_f··on Freeway guardrails are now a favorite target of thieves
[flagged]
abcd_f··on Some users have noticed settings that let Meta analyze and retain phone photos
That's on newer iOS versions and, by extension, on newer Apple devices only though.
abcd_f··on Altered states of consciousness induced by breathwork accompanied by music
I would probably end up mainly focusing on how cringey this prompt is.
abcd_f··on Dicing an Onion, the Mathematically Optimal Way
It’s a natural convergence point for the technique if you want to avoid disproportionately large pieces that come from the sides.

Lol, what an amateur hour :)

abcd_f··on Volkswagen locks horsepower behind paid subscription
BMW still sells a subscription to advanced headlight functions, live traffic info in their navigation and few other things. It's just now a packaged deal and they also opt you in by default into a three month trial. The car is also all but unusable without an online account, so there's that.

Regrettably, despite of all the brouhaha with the heated seats, all this b/s never really went away.

> On top of all that, they’re awful cars.

They certainly aren't.

abcd_f··on Steam can't escape the fallout from its censorship controversy
Point being that even though this time the takedown targets were reasonable, the next time they might not be, but the mechanism will be already in place.
abcd_f··on Steam can't escape the fallout from its censorship controversy
It bears repeating -

While all games delisted at MC/Visa demands were from the rape and/or incest nsfw genre (and that should've not been on Steam to begin with), it still set a dangerous precedent as the game selection criteria was ultimately subjective. Relatable, but subjective. Next time it will again be subjective, but not as clear cut, yet the precedent will already be in place.

abcd_f··on 1976 Soviet edition of 'The Hobbit' (2015)
He actually says just that!

Basically, he says that he was approached by some random person and was gifted a copy of The Hobbit. This person turned out to be an illustrator of translated edition (same as at the OP's link) and he made Bilbo look like Leonov (the guy in the video).

As a footnote, Leonov famously voiced Soviet version of Winnie The Pooh in all its glorious 3 episodes:

abcd_f··on Show HN: Real-time privacy protection for smart glasses
Your solution does absolutely nothing to address privacy concerns with "glassholes".
abcd_f··on GitHub is no longer independent at Microsoft after CEO resignation
> he was certainly not thinking U.S. values

Damn. I wasn't sure if you were trolling above and now it's clear that you were.

abcd_f··on Content-Aware Spaced Repetition
Pretty much all spaced rep systems except for Anki structure their data this way - an editable data atom with flashcards auto-derived from it, on template or otherwise.
abcd_f··on My Ideal Array Language
> User-Extensible Rank Polymorphism

> IMO this is what makes something an array language.

Great to hear. So what is it?

abcd_f··on Twenty Eighth International Obfuscated C Code Contest
In 135 bytes !

This is right there in the mad scientist territory.

Incredible, pure bananas.

abcd_f··on “No tax on tips” is an industry plant
Sales' commissions and servers' tips is an apples-to-oranges comparison.
abcd_f··on Donate to the Treasury to help pay down the $36.7T public debt
The most coherent thing to do would be to give out a spray-painted "gold" memorial Trump medal, made in China. And then charge for shipping.
abcd_f··on Show HN: Tinder but it's only pictures of my wife and I can only swipe right
Don't forget to add /s after every joke though. This is mandatory.
abcd_f··on Blip: Peer-to-peer massive file sharing
Sure. Still doesn't make "cheap price" a valid combo.
abcd_f··on Blip: Peer-to-peer massive file sharing
"High speeds"
abcd_f··on Blip: Peer-to-peer massive file sharing
Cheap means "low in price", so "cheap price" makes no sense.

Fast means "of a high speed", so it's the same here.

abcd_f··on Blip: Peer-to-peer massive file sharing
Cheap means "low in price". Price can't be "low in price", it can be just "low".
abcd_f··on Blip: Peer-to-peer massive file sharing
It appears that the data is relayed as a fallback, if there's no p2p connection possible. This is a classic transfer model for mediated transfers.
abcd_f··on Blip: Peer-to-peer massive file sharing
This is a minor OCD nitpick, but

> at super fast speeds

Fast speeds aren't a thing, just like cheap prices and wet waters aren't.

abcd_f··on Valve confirms credit card companies pressured it to delist certain adult games
> credit is not really "your money"

Unless it's a prepaid credit card or a debit card, both of which are serviced by MC and Visa and fairly common in Europe.

abcd_f··on Overtourism in Japan, and how it hurts small businesses
After "beating" it with a translator, take a hint and don't enter still.
abcd_f··on A compact bitset implementation used in Ocarina of Time save files
How's this notable? It’s literally the most straight-forward, trivial bitset implementation.
abcd_f··on The chemical secrets that help keep honey fresh for so long
It's just fat.
