abat··on Complaints as Amazon Raises Cost of Prime
I've had the opposite experience. I've started to get things faster with the new 7 days a week delivery partnership with USPS. The one downside is that USPS's tracking is terrible compared to UPS's.
abat··on The Collapse: How a top legal firm destroyed itself
There are marketing reasons for law firm mergers. Law firms make money by having the biggest/richest clients who pay multimillion legal bills. The idea is that these clients want to hire the "best" law firms, and they determine the "best" by looking at which firms are the biggest/richest/hired by other big clients. This logic says that if your competitor firm becomes larger, you need to get larger too in order to appear competitive to clients.

In reality clients are probably smart enough to realize bigger != better, but it's not just pure cargo cult thinking that leads to firms trying to stay large.

abat··on Feds now oppose Aereo, rejecting cloud apocalypse argument
Cable companies pay them a lot of money to retransmit network TV. If Aereo is legal, that means that cable companies could use same trick destroying a large portion of their revenue.
abat··on Creating a New Business Model for Cartoonists
Looks like a great idea. One comment though. The preview pages load slowly for me because all the cartoons are loaded at full resolution (800px width) and then greatly scaled down and cropped on the client (to around 253px with). Browsing pages full of cartoons would be much faster on my slow TWC internet if you could serve prescaled comics.
abat··on Why I stopped being a voluntourist
I've met people who did Peace Corps, and my opinion was much better after meeting them. First they actually became fluent in the local language. Second their focus was often more on enabling locals than on trying to do stuff themselves. For example, they would work with locals on how to push through applications for grant money from developed countries. Dealing with American foreign aid bureaucracy was actually a skill they were well suited for due to their background and education. Finally, they lived on almost no money in the community for a long period of time. The standard of their living was commensurate with the average person in the host community.
abat··on Windows 8 designer: Why Microsoft forced Metro on us all
I don't think that's true. I was in a store this morning where the cashier was talking to tech support because she didn't know how to restart the new win8 computer. All the hidden menus (eg charm bar) were making it very unintuitive for her.

A lot of win8 is not easy to figure out by yourself if you've only used win 7 before.

abat··on FundersClub Reports Unrealized Net IRR of 41.2%
This is the SEC trying to protect the "little guy". This is why they can only let "accredited" investors invest that have over a certain amount of money/income. If you're outraged, make sure to point your outrage at the government.
abat··on Was Y Combinator Worth It?
You can't directly contact VCs unless they already know you, you need an introduction from someone on their radar. Notice the company in the article refers to meetings via introductions as "outbound."

VC's will at least meet with most companies if they play their game. Think of the introduction game as a captcha on the company level.

abat··on Hackers can use Snapchat to disable iPhones, researcher says
Details don't look as interesting as headline suggest. Snapchat doesn't throttle messages, so you can "snapchat bomb" a user with 1000's of messages/sec which will freeze up the phone.
abat··on Warsaw, August 1947
TL;DR

The city must completely disappear from the surface of the earth and serve only as a transport station for the Wehrmacht. No stone can remain standing. Every building must be razed to its foundation.

—SS chief Heinrich Himmler, October 17, SS officers' conference

Warsaw has to be pacified, that is, razed to the ground.

—Adolf Hitler, 1944[2]

abat··on New York Times Redesign
That's just the intro price. It's $5/WEEK if you want nytimes.com + tablet apps. That's $260/year instead of $22/year. I would gladly subscribe if the long term rate was $5 for 12 weeks.

See full prices here: http://www.nytimes.com/subscriptions/Multiproduct/lp5558.htm...

abat··on Signholder Receives Over $24,000 In Bitcoin After QR Code Appears On ESPN
This looks like the Bitcoin version of the GoldenPalace casino buying the Virgin Mary grilled cheese sandwich for $28,000. The majority of the donations were probably designed to attract attention and therefore help market Bitcoin.
abat··on Coin
Simple looks like a completely different thing to me. It looks like a debit card connected to a fancy budget tool. It looks like a tool for people who have basic finances and need help to avoid overspending.

Coin looks like a device that replaces my existing cards, which is a problem I want help with. I don't want to close my business bank account or get rid of my credit cards, I just want a lighter wallet.

abat··on TWTR
But the banks also got an option to buy an additional 10M shares at $26 in the next 30 days. By keeping the price low, the banks made a $500M profit on top of their fees.

The banks are triple dipping on the IPO: the fee (3.25%), their options on 10M shares, and their ability to limit IPO access to clients that give them profitable business.

That said Twitter extracted some sweetheart loans from their underwriters and the fee is much lower than the usual 7%, so it's definitely a two way game where both sides are trying to take advantage of the other.

abat··on TWTR
The lockup applies to shares on the open market after IPO. That doesn't preclude someone from participating in the IPO itself.
abat··on How to Get an A- in Organic Chemistry
Not always. In the past holistic review was to keep Jews out of the Ivy League. The minority being targeted will probably be different 50 years from now.

That said, I do agree that soft skills are probably valuable for doctors.

abat··on Reddit’s Politics Section Bans Salon, Mother Jones, HuffPost for Bad Journalism
Only if Reddit.com blocked the sites.

Each subreddit is its own privately moderated world. Some subreddits only allow self-posts, which means you can't post third party sites at all. Some subreddits only allow scholarly journals. Some subreddits filter based on political bias.

Everyone chooses what subreddits they want to subscribe to, and if you want a different set of rules you can create your own subreddit.

abat··on Yancey Strickler to Succeed Perry Chen as CEO of Kickstarter
I don't know, but the timescale is very different from Twitter. The founder's been CEO at Kickstarter for 5 years. Twitter went from Noah->Jack->Ev->Dick in four years.
abat··on Top Reviewers On Amazon Get Tons Of Free Stuff
This is true for me with third party sellers. I've had bad experiences where small third party sellers list products incorrectly on Amazon and I have to go through the process of returning the product. A negative review can provide evidence that users are getting shipped the right product in the right condition.

In these cases, I often don't care whether the user actually likes the product. I just want to know they got the right product in good condition.

abat··on /dev/null as a Service
Yes, look at their upcoming product:

/dev/random as a Service: Do you think every random-number-generator is broken? Well, we do! Simply trust us and use our numbers as your only seeding source!

abat··on Snapchat Is Mulling Another Huge Round at a $3.5 Billion Valuation
I think people are valuing Pinterest more on a per user basis, but Snapchat has a lot more users and is growing faster.
abat··on Tesla Snags Apple VP Of Mac Hardware To Lead New Vehicle Development
By the same logic, Apple shouldn't have hired him and Elon Musk should not have started Tesla.
abat··on I 'Hired' A Virtual Personal Assistant To Do My Job
If they're smart they're going to put their best people (and probably spend a lot more time than they bill) on an article that's going to get them press.

I like the concept of testing out the service, but I'd like to see what their typical results look like in comparison.

abat··on Central Park (Banksy)
The pieces he sold here look intentionally mediocre. They're just reproductions using stencils he used a while ago on actual buildings. They look much better in their original context. Here they look flat and boring.

Banksy actually does some interesting stuff with paintings (http://imgur.com/S3CTKip) that's better than just using his old stencils on white canvases. My guess is he wanted these canvases to look like someone did the bare minimum to copy his most iconic stencils and make money off of Banksy's fame.

That said I would have liked to have bought one even if the real art is the entire performance and not the individual canvases being sold.

abat··on I asked for a t-shirt, I got a job
The current headline is eye catching, but a more accurate one might be "I wrote their iOS library for free and I got a job offer".
abat··on Jonathan Ive designs Leica camera for Red charity
It's called marketing. Ive "designing" a limited edition Leica is like Murakami being involved with Louis Vuitton.

Lecia needs people to believe that their cameras are worth a lot of money and involve a much greater amount of design work and craftsmanship than a standard Canon.

abat··on How to integrate AngularJS with Rails 4
Rails has defaulted to scaffolding with coffeescript and sass since version 3.1. It makes sense then in the context of a rails 4 tutorial, that the code would be in coffeescript.
abat··on Tesla Model S involved in 'unintended acceleration' incident
It's just as likely she meant to slam on the brakes and accidentally slammed the wrong pedal. The fact this was the driver's first time in the vehicle makes this kind of mixup easier.
abat··on Setting the Record Straight on False Accusations
They're probably more worried about bad press than the payout for the case. The class action lawyers only care about their own fees. They'll probably get a settlement that involves giving some money to some privacy charity rewarding the lawyers and not actually doing anything to directly benefit the members of the class action.
abat··on How to Get a Job With a Philosophy Degree
The article is about the changes Andy Chan did to improve Wake Forest's career services. He joined the university in 2009 two year after your experience.

Let's hope his changes mean more recent students got more help.
