abadger9··on Ask HN: Where to Go from Here?
great idea, thank you
abadger9··on Ask HN: Where to Go from Here?
you're spot on - working at apache cassandra has been on my list for 7 years. Not a big fan of the databricks engineering team went to school with a few of them and didn't enjoy my interaction with them
abadger9··on Ask HN: Is having a personal blog/brand worth it for you?
It was not! If you look in my history you'll see I talk about my experience starting a consulting company. I had a personal website and brand at the same time, and it was probably a huge waste of time. I never appreciated the engagement I got on comments on blog posts, wouldn't say it brought any new clients, and don't really have anything positive to say other than it was nice owning a domain with my full name.

As I've gotten older, i've come to terms with the fact that's there is really 2 solid ways of earning great money - leet code (yuck but it does the trick) or start a consulting business and build out referrals, most startups aren't worth the time

abadger9··on Someone is impersonating us in a recruiting scam
this happened to me with facebook pre ipo! someone tried to impersonate them and screw with me on a fake technical interview. That person ended up getting kicked out of our college for academic reasons and the campus facebook recruiter found out and extended me an interview.
abadger9··on Ask HN: Moving from Corporate to Solo Dev?
everyone starts somewhere :) I started with 1 as well.
abadger9··on Ask HN: Moving from Corporate to Solo Dev?
I have a consulting business on the side - the more you're able to build an effective network, the more sustainable it is. You either grow your clientele from referrals and your reputation and then it feels like you're printing money (i was making $20,000 a month with minimal effort on the side 5 years ago) or you constantly chase leads and that'll burn you out after a couple of years. let me know if you have any questions.
abadger9··on JVM Anatomy Quark #10: String.intern (2019)
this is the one that got me started in low latency java a decade ago - http://blog.vanillajava.blog/ - I've spoken with Peter a couple of times, he's a phenomenal technologist
abadger9··on JVM Anatomy Quark #10: String.intern (2019)
Having worked in the JVM ecosystem building low latency systems for over a decade, I always aspire to have the minute knowledge Aleksey has. I wish there was a book/MOOC for more senior engineers, but i've found myself content and happy with the Anatomy Quark series.
abadger9··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2022)
I've applied to duckduckgo so many times and recieve a whitelabel "thank you for your interest" within a week everytime. I'm pretty certain it's not my resume because i've worked at FAANGs and lead a team of 20+ engineers that indexs the web of a publicly traded company. I wish you had much better feedback...
abadger9··on Fonoster: The open-source alternative to Twilio
I spent a bit of my career dealing with aterisk, i still don't think i understand it..
abadger9··on Ask HN: Who operates at scale without containers?
I have a private consulting company which has delivered some pretty sizable footprints (touches most fortune 500 companies via integration with a service) and i prefer deploying without containers. In fact i'll say I hate deploying with containers, which is what i do at my 9-5 and i've lost job opportunities at growth startups because someone was a devout follower of containers and i would rather be honest than using a technology i didn't care for.
abadger9··on Cloudflare announces fourth quarter and fiscal year 2021 financial results
I'm always surprised by how fast cloudflare rejects my app. I would love to work there, but have gotten a 'Thank you for your application' email within 2 days of applying. Having worked at a unicorn start up and some notable names over the last decade+, never figured out why
abadger9··on Heroku Is Down
I deployed a personal app to Heroku when i was quite young and Heroku was barely a company. I lost access to the email that was tied to that heroku account, to their credit, the app is still deployed (and quite embarrassing to look back on). I've tried contacting support to remove the app multiple times but they've refused citing "security" concerns.
abadger9··on Ask HN: Do you have to use LinkedIn to get hired?
Definitely not! I deactivated my linked in 5 years ago and got emails from Amazon, Snapchat, and some stealth company that didn't want to disclose their name since Monday. I think it's not as necessary on the engineering side, but I did pass all the rounds of interviews @twitter but have a manager pass on me because i didn't have a linkedin profile (this was through a 3rd party contracting agency and not the FTE application route)
abadger9··on James Webb is fully deployed
i'm sure they might when the light reaches them, given the context of planets in our neighborhood, probably in a few hundred/thousand years?
abadger9··on I started a paper website business
I've done some OCR side projects during hackathon weeks over the years (with google tesseract). This is a neat idea, I can only imagine the difficulty with which transcribing the variety of terrible handwriting will cause frustration and an eventual flood of refunds.
abadger9··on Show HN: Pony – a messenger for mindful correspondence
Nice work! I'm building a messenger as well which plays on time dynamics (differently) as side project, your UI is phenomenal. Happy to see a thoughtful take on messenger apps, imo the current model is (1) stale (2) 20-30 years old without any interesting innovations other than emojies/channel organization.
abadger9··on Avoiding bot detection: How to scrape the web without getting blocked?
Sorry about that, we're unable to discuss our projects with adjacent teams within the company. What you're saying is a valid frustration, the motivation behind the original comment was to put a thermometer on the repo.
abadger9··on Avoiding bot detection: How to scrape the web without getting blocked?
I'm a lead engineer on the search team of a publicly traded company who's bread and butter is this domain. I was curious about this list, it candidly misses the mark- the tech mentioned in this blog is what you might get if you hired a competent consultant to build out a service without having domain knowledge. In my experience, what's being used on the bleeding edge is two steps ahead of this.
abadger9··on In-demand tech skills are the last thing to look for in IT hires
on a tangential note, i was fortunate to work at netsuite early in their development (00-10) and it was the best professional experience of my life. Their low attrition rate speaks to the caliber of their leadership
