It is a fork of an older version, I will update it sometime soon and send a PR upstream for the vert switcher, although I'm afraid it might not be implemented in the neatest way possible. :)

Here is my fork of this editor, with an added vertical layout, etc:

aaviator42··on The greatest bug I never fixed (2010)
I wonder what could have been done to fix this bug. Does anyone with more experience with the game have any ideas?
aaviator42··on PHP in 2024
I am by no means an exceptional dev, but some PHP code I've written can be found on my GitHub. None of it uses frameworks, and a bunch of it is small libraries ('components') that make up my own personal functional 'framework'/toolkit: https://github.com/aaviator42/

Edit: Link that shows only PHP repos: https://github.com/aaviator42?tab=repositories&q=&type=&lang...

aaviator42··on PHP in 2024
I still do this! Often still over FTP, sometimes over folder mounted over SSH.

aaviator42··on PHP in 2024
In case it wasn't obvious from the context of the rest of my comment, I was using this dictionary definition of 'functional':

> designed to be practical and useful, rather than attractive.

It gets the job done. Really well.

aaviator42··on PHP in 2024
I'm in the same boat! PHP is so insanely functional. There are a lot of powerful frameworks but I personally like to keep my projects very simple with minimal dependencies and nothing comes close in terms of how fast I can go from idea → prototype → production. PHP + SQLite is a beast.
aaviator42··on Phonk - JavaScript scripting for Android devices
Comment quote from the last time this took off on HN, 4 years ago:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23673323

-----

Just to add a few more things about PHONK:

- PHONK is a full dev environment that lives within the phone / tablet

- The Web Editor is hosted inside the device and served using a web server. So no 3rd party servers / cloud needed.

- It can access the device sensors in a couple of lines of code

- Has support for Websockets, MQTT, OSC, Midi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth BLE, NFC and more in a very concise way

- You can connect an Arduino straight to the phone with a USB OTG cable and communicate with it

- UI uses normalized coordinates, which is very handy for prototyping. It comes with a variety of views for most needs. You can also create a custom one.

- There is live code execution from the Web Editor. Just select the code => Control (or CMD) + Shift + X and that code will be live executed.

- PHONK comes with a Console, so you can console out wirelessly to the Web Editor.

- It comes with OpenStreetMaps support by default

- More advanced 2d and 3d graphics can be done through Processing which is included as a library.

aaviator42··on How (and why) to run SQLite in production
I've been using SQLite in production for years and am very happy with it. I believe it's sufficient for the vast majority of web use cases.

I have a bit of battle-tested code that gives me a nice key-value interface to SQLite files, perhaps others will find it useful: https://github.com/aaviator42/StorX

aaviator42··on Oink: An API for PHP in a single file
Hey, nice! Here's my take on the same concept: https://github.com/aaviator42/zaap

Allows me to have an API with multiple methods and endpoints up and running in minutes. :)

aaviator42··on Show HN: PHP API Bindings for Open Brewery DB
I agree with a lot of your comment, but what's wrong according to you with php.ini? I've always found it a really handy way to customise the behaviour of my php installs and apps, and I've actually learnt a fair bit from just reading through the comments and following the links it contains.
aaviator42··on Switch off bad TV settings
Parent comment's point is that you shouldn't have to hack your TV just to get a half-decent user experience.
aaviator42··on Cicadas are so loud, fiber optic cables can ‘hear’ them
It's insane how cool humans are to be coming up with this insane stuff.
aaviator42··on Ask HN: Are there privacy respecting browsers for Android with accessibility?
Even regular FF for Android has a lot of privacy and tracking prevention features. I highly recommend trying it out. Also install uBlock Origin.
aaviator42··on Ask HN: Are there privacy respecting browsers for Android with accessibility?
Firefox (standard, non-focus) on Android has a reader view toggle button in the URL bar. Then you can go to the 3 dot menu > customize reader view, and increase the font size.

I do not know if this is a complete solution for you, but I hope it helps.

aaviator42··on Why you should probably be using SQLite
Yes! Like I mentioned in the other comment, multiple processes cannot access the same :memory: sqlite db, which makes it incompatible for our use cases.

I'm a huge fan of SQLite! My org's apps use it heavily, often via this simple key-value interface built on sqlite: https://github.com/aaviator42/StorX

Handles tens of thousands of requests a day very smoothly! :)

As an aside, has anyone tried using a RAM-disk as the storage medium for SQLite DB files? We've started experimenting with it lately and results have been promising!

aaviator42··on An Internet of PHP
There's a lot and hate of criticism of PHP out there, so some praise and sane opinions are nice to balance it out.
aaviator42··on An Internet of PHP
Your comment articulates my thoughts on PHP very succinctly. Especially the culture fit bit. PHP is so insanely pragmatic that if someone looks down on it due to false preconceived notions then they're not the kind of person I can probably work happily with anyway.

It's also the thing I'm best at!

aaviator42··on Show HN: CoolReadME, a way to display GitHub profile readmes with custom CSS
Ah, makes sense. I didn't say this in my original comment, but this is a cool idea, and you might want to re-submit it (perhaps with a short write-up and example links) once you have the bugs ironed out!

aaviator42··on I don't want to host services but I do
One of the 'services' I host is a simple interface on a server that allows me to easily upload files and get sharable links to them.

At this point it's used by more than just me, a bunch of people in my circle use my instance to share files.

In case anyone else finds this useful: https://github.com/aaviator42/izi
