Correct. Corporate income tax is really a tax on shareholders (alternative to paying tax is paying shareholders a dividend). The corporate tax rate hits all owners regardless of income/wealth. That includes pension funds, 401ks, small investors, etc. Proponents of progressive taxes should be against corporate tax and in favor of income tax, property tax, etc.

Effective US tax rate is higher in 2025. The 2024 tax number was inflated due to a one time payment relating to Ireland which actually dates back to 2016.

Their 2025 US taxes are actually higher. In Q4 2024 "Apple paid a one-time income tax charge of $10.2 billion in order to resolve the tax issue with Ireland, which dates to 2016."

The article misstates that Tesla redacted when ADAS was in use, which is incorrect. They redact which version was in use.

They redacted the version of driver assistance (autopilot vs FSD), not that there was driver assistance. The article is does not make this clear, but another poster linked to the actual reports CSV and it's clear that's the case.

The reason this isn't getting more attention: There are 99 fatalities per day in the US from car accidents. There have been 17 fatalities from Teslas in AutoPilot mode since 2019 per WaPo.

Westfield SF is not like the failing / dated suburban malls most people think of. It's extremely nice. High end stores. Beautiful architecture. And it's right on Market Street in downtown San Francisco. There's a food emporium on the lower floor, with high quality restaurants, not your typical food court faire. Nationwide there's a trend for dated 80s malls to close, but high end malls like Westfield? They're thriving elsewhere.

The point of the article is that US manufacturers in particular will be negatively affected. More so than tech or service industries for example. The reason being that manufactures often have low rates because of accelerated depreciation of investments in capital expenditures (factories and upgrades). The law as it exists today is intentional, and is designed to encourage investment in US manufacturing, this new proposal goes directly against that.

The number one tax break they refer to is stock based comp. If companies paid their execs with cash (i.e. bonuses tied to share price or company performance) instead of shares, they'd have higher cash expense, and therefore wouldn't have those so called profits to tax in the first place. Such an obvious omission in this article indicates this is intentionally misleading.

The next two tax breaks (research and experimentation) and renewable energy seem worthwhile, and I'd guess popular on both sides of the isle.

Interesting but a there's a decent chance of correlation not causation. Unhealthy people and people over 65 (i.e. those most susceptible to serious COVID complications) are the same group that are most likely to be Vitamin D deficient. The primary source of Vitamin D is sunlight. People over 65 tend to stay indoors, etc. People with darker skin are also more prone to D deficiency due to increased melanin, but also have higher rates of obesity, more likely to suffer from diabetes, are more likely to live in cramped conditions, etc.

Would it be possible to build devices that could be unlocked a fixed number of times across all units (say 1,000 times). Devices could be heavily hardware encrypted, but unlockable with an encryption key, a portion of which comes from a publicly monitored blockchain/distributed ledger, that when used reduces the number of future uses.

This way, the government could be granted access for extreme cases, but without the potential for abuse or mass surveillance. Once there were 1,000 check-ins, not more keys could be generated.
