aaronsnoswell··on DOT and FAA Propose New Rules for Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems
These rules are very similar to those already in place in Australia (http://www.casa.gov.au/scripts/nc.dll?WCMS:STANDARD::pc=PC_1...).
aaronsnoswell··on Introducing “6-pack”: the first open hardware modular switch
Am I the only one who read the title and thought it referred to a 'pushbutton' style electronics hardware switch? I would have been quite excited to see that!
aaronsnoswell··on Show HN: Gosms – Your own local SMS gateway powered by Golang
Can you expand some more - does this software connect to a modem to send SMS's to nearby phones? Is this software similar to a stingray device, or am I misunderstanding this?
aaronsnoswell··on Ask HN: I got let go this morning. What should I do next?
The OP says they are engaged - depending on the situation this may mean the increased risk of a startup is not a great choice.
aaronsnoswell··on Facebook was down
And forgive us our sheep-throwing.
aaronsnoswell··on AI-Powered Meeting Scheduler X.ai Raises $9.2M Series A

aaronsnoswell··on Defcon Badge Walkthrough
I can't believe someone solved this. Champion effort.
aaronsnoswell··on Neglected machine learning ideas
Was anyone else taken with the images interspersed throughout that blog post? Does anyone know where they are from?

Edit: found them thanks to Google image search: http://www.darkroastedblend.com/2014/01/machines-alive-whims...

aaronsnoswell··on Meep – Free simulation software to model electromagnetic systems
I've got the same question as johnm1019 - I've used FEM for mechanical stress analysis before, but never for electromagnetic stuff - what would the applications of this software be?
aaronsnoswell··on Show HN: OneBody Church Directory software I've been hacking on for 7 years
Great work! This is really cool! My church currently doesn't have a system like this, but is definitely heading this way.
aaronsnoswell··on OS X 10.9.4 Update Broken?
Thanks for the comment - my network's SSID is already being broadcast though.
aaronsnoswell··on OS X 10.9.4 Update Broken?
Good to hear I'm not crazy - mine is an MBA too, but an older model (mid 2011).
aaronsnoswell··on Mobile Wikipedia looks more beautiful than desktop
I'm the same - I have HN, Wikipedia and many sites on some level of zoom.
aaronsnoswell··on Show HN: Freeciv, HTML5 open source version

aaronsnoswell··on Ask HN: What's with all the new languages?
"How is Go or Rust better than C C++ Ruby Python Lisps Java Smalltalk Erlang and whatnot." - sure fire way to start a flame war with programmers ;)
aaronsnoswell··on Tailspotting: Identifying and profiting from CEO vacation trips
Thanks, their site has been down for hours.
aaronsnoswell··on Judge Releases Information about Police Use of Stingray Cell Phone Trackers
In Australia this information is freely available in public databases anyway. Obviously temporary towers might not be present in these records though.
aaronsnoswell··on What is the Longest Disambiguation Page on Wikipedia?
First paragraph, this made me laugh - "what if you just want to know the real deal about the English explorer John Smith’s encounter with Pocahontas?" - then you shouldn't be looking on Wikipedia!
aaronsnoswell··on Ask HN: What is the most difficult tech/dev challenge you ever solved?
That's awesome! And congratulations on the dream job!
aaronsnoswell··on Ask HN: What is the most difficult tech/dev challenge you ever solved?
- At age 12, I taught myself C programming using [1] (I had never programmed before, but wanted to make games), then proceeded to write a 12,000 line 3D OpenGL Game Engine from scratch, using the NeHe tutorials [2] as guides. It took me three years. The final program ran on Windows XP and 98, could import 3D models from Autodesk 3D Studio, and had a 3D asteroids style game demo. I used Milkshape [3] for 3D modelling, and Dev-C++ as my IDE [4].

- For an AI course at University, my partner and I developed a custom motion planning algorithm involving neural networks, RRTs [5] and POMDPs [6] in several thousand lines of Java. That was some of the craziest (and most fun) programming I've ever done. Our lecturer was Hanna Kurniawati [7], who is world famous (for some value of 'world') for her work on POMDPs, which was really cool.

aaronsnoswell··on LibGDX 1.0 released
Been working with LibGDX since 2010 - I still remember buying the Newton physics game on my Motorola Droid. This was the best 2D Android game engine back then, and it still is in my opinion :) Congrats to the devs!
aaronsnoswell··on Learn C and build your own Lisp
Got halfway through this today - most fun I've had programming in ages. Thanks for the link and thanks to the author!
aaronsnoswell··on Flappy 2048 in HTML5 Canvas
Don't try playing that flappy bird clone with headphones in. It's gonna take my ears a while to recover from that coin sound.
aaronsnoswell··on Secretary Problem
How is that variation politically incorrect? Genuine question here. If anything, to me it seems culturally correct.
aaronsnoswell··on Algebraic and calculus concepts may be better way to introduce children to math
Relevant anecdote: For a high school ICT project my class had to make an educational game in Visual Basic. I made a 'math invaders' clone where you answer simple algebra sums (e.g. 5 + x = 12) to defeat the relentless hordes of aliens. At home my 8yo brother watched me play for about 5 minutes, then exclaimed 'Oh I get it, the letters are like numbers that you have to find!', then went on to play the game himself for hours. He learnt algebra about 6 years before any of his classmates through gamification, and years down the track enjoys math more than many of his friends.
aaronsnoswell··on What Is the Time Signature of the Ominous Electronic Score of The Terminator?
Time signatures are extrinsic to a piece of music; a 3/4 piece can be also be written as a x/y piece, it will just be confusing for the musicians to follow.
aaronsnoswell··on JSON5 is a proposed extension to JSON
The one best thing about this - comments.
