aaroneous··on Paperfold CSS
Just CSS3 3D transforms on plain 'ole DOM objects connected by CSS3 animations.
aaroneous··on Japanese engineers develop flying robotic orb
Actually, many prop planes can control the pitch of their blades as well :)
aaroneous··on Techstars or a Harvard MBA?
Gulfstream, obviously.
aaroneous··on Show HN: Making time tracking for freelancers not suck - Paydirt
Looks nice, although there's nothing compelling enough to switch from my current (Billings).

If you're looking for feedback, you should allow invoices to be emailed from within the app. This workflow would drive me mad: download pdf -> new email -> type address & subject -> attach pdf -> send.

aaroneous··on IPad gets approval from FAA to replace paper flight charts and maps
And what happens when you spill your coffee on paper maps? No system is perfect.

(not that an iPad is immune to the cup of joe either)

aaroneous··on IPad gets approval from FAA to replace paper flight charts and maps
This wasn't a blanket approval for pilots to throw out all dead trees.

The FAA actually only gave approval to one charter company (Executive Jet Management) to use the iPad in conjunction with their extensive operations manual. Right now all authorizations are being done on a case-by-case basis.

I wasn't expecting much interest in it, but I'd be happy to clean it and package it up if you guys want to play.

Is that better?

aaroneous··on Why Learning to Fly (or Code) Is Easier Than You Think
There's a requisite level of precision that I think programmers can feel comfortable with.

There are also few things that are more refreshing after you've been sitting in front of a computer all day than flying to the coast, popping open the window at 4,000ft and taking in a California sunset.

aaroneous··on Why Learning to Fly (or Code) Is Easier Than You Think
Try a discovery flight. It's a cheap, no-commitment way to see what flying small planes is like.

After you're back on the ground you'll probably find yourself bumping up the priority of flying lessons on your todo.

aaroneous··on The Auto-Pilot iPad App
The envelope that ballistic parachutes provide a life-saving emergency resolution vs a well executed power-off glide is pretty narrow. The studies show that far too often it is abused by providing a false sense of security, encouraging pilots to take risks they otherwise wouldn't have.
aaroneous··on The Auto-Pilot iPad App
X-Plane uses blade element theory - essentially it breaks various flying surfaces of an aircraft apart and calculates the forces on each one of those parts to simulate how it could react. Not perfect, but better than the MSFS approach.
aaroneous··on The Auto-Pilot iPad App
If the pilot of a small airplane experiences a medical emergency that leaves him incapacitated, this sort of device could mean the difference between life and death for anyone else onboard the plane (assuming their not pilots as well).
aaroneous··on How I Incorporated My Startup
If your company resides in California and you register your corp in Delaware you'll still need to pay CA's minimum franchise fee of $800/yr in addition to whatever fees DE assesses.

aaroneous··on When we got to the scanner, I opted out. Then they opted out.
Two interesting excerpts from the Backscatter X-ray wikipedia page:

The national radiation safety standard (see below) sets a dose per screening limit for the general-use category. To meet the requirements of the general-use category a full-body x-ray security system must deliver less than the dose a person receives during 4 minutes of airline flight. TSA has set their dose limit to ensure a person receives less radiation from one scan with a TSA general-use x-ray security system than from 2 minutes of airline flight.

And

Fathers exposed to medical diagnostic x-rays are more likely to have infants who contract leukemia, especially if exposure is closer to conception or includes two or more X-rays of the lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract or lower abdomen.[36] In medical radiography the x-ray beam is adjusted to expose only the area of which an image is required, so that generally shielding is applied to the patient to avoid exposing the gonads,[37] whereas in an airport backscatter scan, the testicles of men and boys will be deliberately subjected to the direct beam, and radiation will also reach the ovaries of female subjects. Whilst the overall dose averaged over the entire body is lower in a backscatter X-ray scan than in a typical medical X-ray examination, because of the shielding of the gonads used in medical radiography this in itself does not mean that the dose to the testicles would be less in an airport scan.

aaroneous··on Dear Foursquare, Gowalla: Please Let’s Stop Pretending This Is Fun
If you're talking about Pier 39 in SF, then Yelp's suggestion to walk a mile away was probably pretty good.
aaroneous··on We're moving. Goodbye Rackspace.
I had a similar experience: with minimal negotiating we were able to get 50% off their initial quote. I also renegotiated our terms later within the contract period with relative ease.

They pad their pricing pretty heavily, so don't be afraid to ask.

aaroneous··on How many formats do I need for HTML5 video?
.mov will only play in the Safaris, not even Chrome.

Better to use a .mp4 and .ogv (or webm) if you're want to go pure HTML5 and have the best results across browsers. The mobile browsers have additional restrictions.

aaroneous··on Where to submit your startup for some coverage
TC has never delivered anywhere close to 80k uniques for any of the projects I have been involved with.

3-4 years ago (first time I had a project covered by TC) it delivered ~3x more traffic compared to what I see nowadays (probably because the volume of daily posts has skyrocketed over those years).

I'm sure controversial topics (Angelgate, etc) still drive traffic, but if HN is creating 10k uniques for top stories then the "HN effect" is greater than what average TC coverage provides.

Plus, I've seen a lot of early adopters and tastemakers have moved to HN for finding things more on the cutting edge.

As much as I hate to say it, planning an effective HN marketing campaign may end up being more useful than trying to pitch the bloggers...

aaroneous··on Where to submit your startup for some coverage
TechCrunch won't deliver 80k uniques. If you got 10k via HN then that's a lot more than TC has been sending these days.
aaroneous··on Ask HN: Who do you go to for brochure design?
I have a friend who runs an indie design & print firm. http://www.danamediagroup.com is his co and his name is Cameron. Let him know Aaron sent you and I'm sure he'll giving you great pricing :]
aaroneous··on Tips on Hiring Employees
Tip #0: Blast annoying popups in the face of your readers, then tell them that you sold your company for a million.

I never made it to reading the article since I closed the tab after seeing that much. Spammy and tacky - no thanks.

aaroneous··on Ask HN: Should I take this Google job offer?
Thanks! I'm particularly amused that using google couldn't provide any help in figuring that one out.
