aaronblohowiak··on Natural occurring molecule rivals Ozempic in weight loss, sidesteps side effects
the caloric restriction that these drugs engender can indeed lead to various forms of under-nourishment. as you point out, your protein needs (as a proportion of calorie sources) go UP when you are in caloric restriction; see PSMF.

>a lot

this is pretty vague. I certainly dont think a mastery of any concept invented in last thousand years would be considered encoded in genes though we would want or expect an AGI to be able to learn calculus for instance. In terms of "encoded in genes", I'd say most of what is asked or expected of AGI goes beyond what feral children (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feral_child) were able to demonstrate.

aaronblohowiak··on GLP-1 drugs: An economic disruptor? (2024)
People aren’t computers. Eating fixation and compulsion empirically override the more rational mind in millions of people. One of the effects of these drugs is making eating a more “impersonal” or “detached” kind of decision, so it feels like a real choice rather than something that you think you have a say in but really the more base instincts will override.

Idk if you are serious about that, but if you are there is hope. For about $200/month (not going through insurance) it can be quite easy to not eat so much. I have been really shocked by how much my mind has been quieted by not being obsessed about food and never feeling deprived. Downside: you feel full all the time. Hims.com it’s super easy (no office visits no video conferencing) and fast. Not affiliated except as a happy customer (my wife is happy too.) you CAN out-eat it, but it’s far easier not to.

I don’t know if that is what is happening here, but it is a common occurrence — both to juice numbers but also for special pricing (as mentioned in article) or mutual flexibility (dedicated launch), because the founders know each other, etc.

aaronblohowiak··on Ask HN: What skills do you want to develop or improve in 2025?
Ah yes, wonderful! The koans sites used to be a great way to get into ruby not sure if they are anymore
aaronblohowiak··on Ask HN: What skills do you want to develop or improve in 2025?
Efficiency isn’t the goal of writing ruby. I think “thinking in ruby” can be expansive to you, but “how do I program efficient ruby” is actually antithetical to that.
aaronblohowiak··on Electric cars could last much longer than you think
Most people aren’t engineers and the idea of watt-hours per hour makes eyes glaze over; miles per gallon vs… watt-hours-per-mile ? Nah that is confusing too. Miles per MJ and how many MJ does the car have is nice and clean.

I think you have curse of knowledge, frankly.

> Their report showed that, on average, EV batteries have 90 percent capacity after 100,000 kilometers of driving, and at 300,000 kilometers they still have 87 percent of their original kilowatts left

Another example of how KWh is the wrong unit for energy storage — gets so many people confused and they don’t know the difference between storage and power.

No, reduce barriers to increasing housing supply. You can’t fix the gap between housing starts and population with more barriers to building new housing.
aaronblohowiak··on My second year without a job
I was low-fodmap for YEARS (a little onion on something would trigger an emergency bathroom situation for me...) . but now FODZYME means I even make onion jelly for my burgers with zero discomfort. it costs about a dollar per serving and you have to put it on after cooking (heat denatures it or something) but it is truly a game-changer. im not affiliated in any way except I just ordered another bottle.
aaronblohowiak··on If not React, then what?
Other commenters have elaborated as well, but to summmarize: hundreds of Ms on a dev machine a) does matter and b) is likely much much more in less than ideal computing environments, I disagree that the backend usually is where more time is spent (at least in maaaaany apps I have worked on) And re: specialized domains, I think most users of most software appreciate speed even if it isn’t a stated objective
aaronblohowiak··on If not React, then what?
>React performance concerns in the real world are typically measured in, at worst, hundreds of milliseconds. Yes, there are a few specialized domains where this will matter. No, you probably don’t work in one. Greater leverage can almost always be derived from improving the backend.

Respectfully, I disagree on all of these points.
