aantix··on I automated my job application process
The current hiring situation is so broken. Because of AI and automation.

One developer job on LinkedIn - 1100 applicants, 1000+ don’t even live in the right region, so clearly it’s automated and they’re not reading even basic requirements.

Next time - video interviews all the way through. Any hint of AI in the interview process, they’re done. If a different person shows up for the first day of the job, they’re done.

aantix··on GPT-5 is behind schedule
You’re thinking of language in the strictest of sense.

GPS data as it relates to location names, people, cultures, path finding.

aantix··on GPT-5 is behind schedule
Have we really hit the wall?

Do they use GPS based data?

Feels like there’s data all around us.

Sure they’ve hit the wall with obvious conversations and blog articles that humans produced, but data is a by product of our environment. Surely there’s more. Tons more.

aantix··on Always go to the funeral (2005)
There's been a lot more reflective, humanity stories on HN.

Or maybe I'm just noticing more.

I've been on HN since 2007.

There was that story a few weeks ago with the aging parents and their daughter that took a picture of them waving goodbye, each year she visited.

I like these stories. It gives me pause and to wonder what it's all been for.

Probably for my kids. My second oldest (9) loves creating levels in Geometry Dash. He'll probably be an engineer.

He asks great questions. He can teach himself new tricks from YouTube videos. He asks for critical feedback on his levels. That's a good start.

I'm just rambling.

aantix··on Mouseless – fast mouse control with the keyboard
This reminds me of Vimium, the Chrome extension, that allows you to follow links just by a couple of keystrokes.
aantix··on Gemini 2.0: our new AI model for the agentic era
Their offering is just so... bad. Even the new model. All the data in the world, yet they trail behind.

They have all of these extensions that they use to prop up the results in the web UI.

I was asking for a list of related YouTube videos - the UI returns them.

Ask the API the same prompt, it returns a bunch of made up YouTube titles and descriptions.

How could I ever rely on this product?

aantix··on U.S. math scores drop on major international test
Public schools are infrastructure.

Any child of any ability, race, socioeconomic background has a right to an education.

That is promise of public education.

The charter school can be selective. They can deny education.

The charter school - better for your child? Sounds like it.

Better for society, no.

aantix··on UnitedHealth's Effort to Deny Coverage for a Patient's Care (2023)
I needed an adrenalectomy.

I called before hand, trying to figure out what I would owe afterwards.

No one could give me a price. It’s all vague, we don’t know answers.

It’s absurd.

I basically got stern - eventually somebody is going to send me a bill with a number on it, so someone knows what this will cost.

Still never got a solid number out of them.

aantix··on Genie 2: A large-scale foundation world model
Not even close. It fails basic framework questions for me, that Claude and GPT easily answer.
aantix··on Rails is better low code than low code
You can get really far with Make.com

It handless authentication, storing if auth tokens, can run periodic jobs without managing any infra.

Its great.

aantix··on If not React, then what?
Turbo morphing. It’s part of Hotwire.

Re-Render the full page server side, app takes response, applies only the changes needed. Preserves scrolling state, etc.

Super simple pattern for building dynamic sites.

aantix··on O2 unveils Daisy, the AI granny wasting scammers' time
What's the best API for real-time conversations?

Strangely, I looked at OpenAI's offering.

Despite it being crazy expensive, they also didn't offer a reference implementation anywhere close to the functionality that is demo'ed in the regular ChatGPT app.

Nobody seems to get the interruptions correct - people are doing all sorts of weak workarounds like push-to-talk, etc.

aantix··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2024)
What do you feel is an appropriate and ethical way to surface content?

How would you go about writing the recommendation algorithm?

aantix··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
Email me, jim.jones1@gmail.com

Would love your input.

aantix··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
Todd Beaupré, the product lead for the YouTube homepage, says "We love exploration, have multiple teams dedicated to it."

But from my kids' viewing habits, I don't see it. The algorithm is seems super narrowly focused.

Andrej Karpathy commented on the narrowness of the algorithm just the other day.

aantix··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
YouTube recommendations for kids shouldn't be driven by engagement (e.g. "oh, you watched 20 hours of MrBeast videos. You probably need another hour.")

If my kid watches an hour of unboxing toy videos, I shouldn't have to try and disable 3,000 channels of toy unboxings in an effort for that topic to never surface again.

The thumbs down button essentially has zero effect.

https://www.wired.com/story/youtube-dislike-button-mozilla-r...

Diversity of thought and topic is much more critical when they are kids.

aantix··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2024)
A new YouTube app/player, for my kids.

It allows us to control the algorithm. It’s all LLM translating to YouTube search queries under the hood.

Visually it looks the same.

The suggested videos come from predefined buckets on topics they love.

E.g. 33% fun math, 33% DIY engineering, 33% creative activities.

Video recommendations that have a banned word in the title/desc don't get displayed e.g. MrBeast, anything with Minecraft in it, never gets surfaced.

For anyone interested in using it, send me an email.

aantix··on Ozempic linked to lower Alzheimer's risk in people with Type 2 diabetes
> just being more active and eating better

You're grossly underestimating the problem.

40+% of the population are obese.

This isn't just a few pounds to lose. This is 60, 70, 100lbs.

The task is to lose the weight forever.

For which long term weight loss success numbers are abysmal.

aantix··on Ozempic linked to lower Alzheimer's risk in people with Type 2 diabetes
what's the alternative?

Struggling with food, being extremely overweight the rest of your life, and not being able to play with your kids because of it?

aantix··on Ozempic linked to lower Alzheimer's risk in people with Type 2 diabetes
You're getting downvoted because you didn't even care to do a simple Google search as to when the first GLP-1 was released. 2005. Almost 20 years.

We have the data.

aantix··on Ozempic linked to lower Alzheimer's risk in people with Type 2 diabetes
Take a look at exenatide, a GLP-1 that was FDA-approved in 2005.

aantix··on US probes Tesla's Full Self-Driving software after fatal crash
Before FSD is allowed on public roads?

It’s a net positive, saving lives right now.

aantix··on Ask HN: What breakthrough helped you build and maintain better relationships?
Always risk the relationship by revealing your thoughts.

Even those hard, messy, I don’t think you’ll like me or you’ll think I’m crazy thoughts.

“I will be truthful with you and you with me, and we will find ourselves in this knowing.

People think that intimacy is about sex. But intimacy is about truth.

When you realize you can tell someone your truth, when you can show yourself to them, when you stand in front of them and their response is “you’re safe with me” - that’s intimacy.”

— Taylor Jenkins Reid

aantix··on How long til we're all on Ozempic?
Many embrace it.

Testosterone replacement therapy, highly refined protein powders, nootropics, etc.

We’re all trying to make the best of what’s given, revert mistakes, live longer.

All options are on the table.

aantix··on How long til we're all on Ozempic?
GLP-1's have been around since 2005. Exenatide.

They're not new.

aantix··on How long til we're all on Ozempic?
Report back in 10, 15 and 20 years.

Likely, you will at some point revert to unhealthy habits and become fat again.

Long-term weight loss success numbers are abysmal.

aantix··on Ask HN: What breakthrough helped you build and maintain better relationships?
You ask directly - the very questions you outlined.

You have to risk the relationship - the very thoughts you fear, the thoughts "Oh, I could never ask that, they'll hate me."

Those thoughts. You have to voice them.

It's the only way to maintain intimacy and reveal who you truly are.
